I just got wind of the first annual Orval Day, which is coming up next week. From the BA Events Calendar:

"On March 26th, devotees of Orval Trappist Ale – and even some folks who haven’t tried it yet – will convene upon their favorite bar to celebrate one of the world’s most unique beers. Orval was the first Brett beer to land on US shores, and has become the favorite beer for many star American brewers. Orval sells one beer, brewed to exquisite perfection within the walls of Notre Dame d’Orval Monastery in Belgium. It’s delicious when it leaves the brewery, but also evolves in the bottle for five years or more. A portion of the proceeds from Orval Day will be donated to MAP International."

For those of you who won't be able to attend an event in person, I think it would be cool to have an online Orval tasting in WBAYDN on the 26th. Trappist ales are a rare treat for me, and this would be a great opportunity to sample one of the best. Any takers?

I'm in. My nephew and his girlfriend are coming up to Stowe to ski that weekend. We're planning an evening of debauchery that night so why not?!?!? He's only 25 and hasn't had too many Belgians so I was planning Rochefort 6, 8, 10 and a Westy 12. Maybe a Cantillon with dinner. Orval could easily be thrown into the mix.

How about March 26th, 2017 or 2018 so we have chance to properly cellar the brett?

According to Merchant du Vin, this is the first annual Orval Day. Besides, I like my chances of finding some year-old Orval on the shelves around here. I might even be able to do a three- or four-year vertical.

Guess I should check the store where I last got one since it was about 20 months old already. I generally prefer stouts, but Orval is delicious.

Fwiw, not that a beer like Orval won't be interesting to do again, but that already was the subject of BA's first online tasting not too long ago.

Did I say it? Did I say it? I stopped at the store this evening and found two bottles of Orval dated 8/20/2014. Now the quest begins for something older. Stay tuned!

Boy, I screwed the pooch on that one! I must've been working that weekend. Anyway, if you'd like to participate in this one, just post your pictures and your reviews in WBAYDN #1253 on March 26. I think that'll work.

A decent cellar should already be storing these gems. One of my all time favorites!

Is Orval still considered Trappist? Or did they lose that status as I remember potentially being the case? If they are still Trappist then I'm in.

Well there you have it folks, I'm in. Gotta go grab that bottle. I bet you there's somewhere around town where they've "aged" the beer for me. Haha.
