Any suggestions for regularly available craft Mexican lagers?

Is a mexican lager a Vienna? I know mordello is, and its decent IMO. But corona and land shark are not, correct? Both are bad I know, but could be improved on in the current craft movement.

Most beers targeted to Mexico are Vienna Lagers. This came from German immigrants bringing lager yeast with them during the Gold Rush. Steam beer was developed to be able to produce lagers despite the warmer climate.
The style stays strong today because it's light, refreshing and also goes great with spicy food.

Anchor's Steam Beer (California Common) would be your best bet.

I may not be much help besides the flying dog cerveza. But if you are referring to the lagers like corona or modelo, there are beers out there that use flaked maize and ive had a few beers with agave in it which i believe comes from Mexico the only off the top of my head is Numero Uno.

I recall seeing 4 different beer styles called Day of the Dead at TW in past few years, judging from the ratings aren't here they're not spectacular.

Negra Modelo, best beer out of Mexico that we can get consistently in the US. I have this beer at least once a week when getting my Mexican food fix.

ExNovo makes a beer called The most interesting Mexican lager, it's one of my favorite beers to drink when I just want something light and refreshing. I remember hearing/reading that it was made using Modelos yeast.

I've always enjoyed Dos Pistoles from Great River Brewing, which is a "dark" Vienna Lager.

    That beer reads awesome:

“The challenge in creating this beer was creating layers of complexities rather than an abundance of big flavor,” said Tim Matthews, Oskar Blues’ Head of Brewing Operations. “The result is a mild mouth coating with malt complexity, ranging from almonds, walnuts and bread crust, along with a refreshing hop note from noble hops.”

    Cheers!

Mexico has its own indigenous history of lager brewing:

    “Mexican lagers

So how did Vienna lager land in Mexico? On April 10, 1864, Napoleon III of France appointed Maximilian I -- one of the Austro-Hungarian empire's Habsburgs -- emperor of Mexico. He was the only ruler in the Second Mexican Empire, and his rule was short-lived. He was overthrown by Benito Juarez just three years later.

But in terms of beer, his influence continues to this day because Maximilian I's entourage included a number of Austrian brewers, notably Santiago Graf. Many of these Austrian brewers continued to brew in Mexico even after Maximilian was executed, and they greatly influenced the development of Mexico's brewing industry.”

So in the mid-1800s the lagers brewed in Mexico were of the style: Vienna Lager.

Today the predominant beers of Mexico are AAL beers (just like here in the US).

    Cheers!

Mexican Logger is terrible IMHO.. Priced too high. Abv too low (obviously ABV isn't a true factor in lagers, but it just doesn't feel worth it). Not to mention the flavor is a mess. I'd rather have an american style of a pils, or spend more for a euro (german) pils.. Just my opinion. In fact, I would rather have some of the mexican beers rather than mexican logger.

A lot of breweries can't do lagers right. It's a sad reality of our growing brewery sector. "Big flavors ONLY!" is what they say
