The first of the Shorts 6pks hit NE Ohio just yesterday. One of the buyers at my favorite local shop enthused about the Lupa Licious and the ControversiALE, so I decided to pick up a single of each. I get home and try the ControversiALE first. I get nothing but roasted broccoli on the nose. Hmm. I take a sip, more bitter roasted broccoli. I figured the bottles on that case may have gotten lightstruck somehow. So I crack open the Lupa Licious. Same thing, broccoli broccoli broccoli. Has this happened to anyone else yet? I was so excited to try my first Shorts brews and they were sadly drain pours because of (assumingly) light-struck bottles :slight_frown:

Drinking a Huma now, definitely not tasting as great as I remember. And I do get sort of a vegetable aroma/taste. Curious why you think that's due to sunlight?

I can't imagine that the fellas at Shorts are intending a vegetal broccoli/asparagus taste in their brews. It was to the point where it dominated any other possible flavor.

Skunked bottles are the only reason I surmise the flavor could be so off-putting. And I'm certain proper bottles of their ales are not gonna be drain pours.

I had the lupa licious bottles here and thought it tasted SUPER bitter... Not in a good IPA kind of way

Short's is a very consumer-responsive brewery, have any of you notified them? I have not read any serious comments like yours for years, which was prior to the brewery starting to pasteurize their beers.

I was gonna notify my bottle shop first, but you make a good point. I've heard nothing but good things about this brewery, and I'm sure they would appreciate feedback in order to make sure they are handling sending out only the best product.

It is funny I just so happened to be on here and saw this and intercepted the customer service email also. I look forward to getting the info back to research the issue. I have not heard of another complaint like this (in Ohio or elsewhere) and drank quite a few the past week including one or two from Ohio.

We also keep multiple bottles back to research issues if ever they occur so I am looking forward to checking into it.

    Thanks as always,

I've never had a bottle of Huma that tasted off or veggie-like in any way. They do have a certain ingredient(i'm thinking yeast) that is very distinguishable in many of their brews.

I have had 3 diff Hoppy beers from Shorts since they started distributing to ILL. Not impressed, same plant-like flavors that OP described.

My initial thought is that it was the simcoe hop not being fresh. Simcoe is one of my least favorite hop profiles anyway.

Not sure what conclusions do draw from my first few Shorts bottles

^ I still have high respect for Short's. I'm not going to let 1 bad Huma Lupa ruin their reputation here. It's one of the best IPA's around.

Unfortunately people might get a bad vibe from these first bottles, and come to expect the off-flavors. Curious to see what Short's research dept comes back with as I was planning on buying a couple cases for a party.

Bought a 24 pack (2 12 packs at Costco). The APA's tasted really really bitter, never had Short's so i figured thats just how it is, but reading this maybe there is something to it? Anyways Ill give em another chance, just not feeling this APA.

If that's the variety pack, I posted in another thread that those bottles all appear to have been bottled in September. I don't recall the styles in the pack but selling an APA at six months old in a new market is perhaps not the best way to introduce oneself to new customers.

On the Short's site it says "Under proper storage conditions our products can remain tasty and quaffable for up to six months, and beyond!" so hopefully the 'beyond' bit applies to the variety pack.

Skunked bottles smell like skunk aroma. They don't taste like vegetables. You are picking up something other than light struck beer.

Had a few bottles in Chicago. As far as, im concerned they can just keep this stuff in Michigan. Is Lupa suppose to taste like fermented pine bark?

Brown bottles help keep a beer from becoming light struck, but don't prevent it from happening. Put an IPA in a brown bottle out in direct sunlight for a day, chill it down, open it and smell the skunk.
