Interesting. I am actually the exact opposite. Sue seemed sort of weak/subdued to me in comparison. To each his own. I will say that ZD is right there with Jai Alai for me as far as shortest shelf life though.

Brasserie Lefèbvre SA - Abbaye De Floreffe Tripel

    --------------

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. Consume before Oct 21st 2017.

Burnt orange body color, almost into a red amber territory but definitely on the brown side, and a bit murky. Lots of pinhead fine white streams of carbonation on the sides, matching to a frothy white bright head. Head retention is a mix of styrofoam and weak soapy appearances, but doesn't move at all with an easy three fingers, more if you are aggressive on the pour. Head just wont budge and keeps getting lapped up with each bubble coming forward, and cling cling cling ROCKY clumps abound while drinking.

This is a real interesting nose. Mineral and floral notes, with a real honey kick but with a much less subdued sense of sweetness. There's a touch of faint phenol clove character but also some rye like spicy quality as well. Very unexpected, gotta love the variety on these Belgian tripels, and this nose is quite a unique and memorable one.

Palate makes a big surprise. Caramel malts and a big crisp carbonation not unlike a Marzen. Hints of toffee and also banana esters but then some of that classic tripel candi sugar comes in a little bit. Playful carbonation but also a real nearly doppelbock German quality in flavor. Soft mix of sweet banana, and almost vanilla cream in the mix, with a good phenolic brown spiced finish.

This almost comes off as a Marzen large doppel Belgian twist, which is a real fun and memorable beer. Not what I look for in this style particularly from a Belgian producer, but this is quite a neat made brew.

I did wonder if it might have been a little older, or maybe just was aging out more quickly. If either of those beers were available locally, I'd be a big fan and would drink them regularly. In this exact case, PseudoSue just won it for me.

I'm glad to see Grimlock approving of the beer.
Now that I'm home from spending time with my family, it's time for NBS for me

This is the second entry from Short's Brew that I've ever had, after Snake Juice. Superfluid is a very delicious DIPA, and I'm very glad that ClarkstonMark sent this one to me. Glad to be drinking it.
And, yes, Bumblebee approves of it. But he, like me, won't be driving after NBS.

The last two years there were two different barrels. One was Koval, the other was Rye Whiskey.

I think I would love this beer; it sounds like they let the malt be the star of the show, with everything else playing supporting roles.

Too many? There's no such thing. Besides, I have some catching up to do! That may be the strongest hint yet that has caught my medicated attention span.

It's really unexpected, I don't know how else to describe it... then what I came up with. It's interesting cause the bottle says on it "Strong Ale" and I can kind of think of that old stock ale strong English Ale character perhaps as well too... It's a bit of a wild card...

I got a real nice of Belgian goodies from Belgium recently, just finally getting a chance to go through them, see the hauls thread to see what I got if you're interested: Page 307

I hit "post reply" too soon. I've added a review to my post, which I usually do on NBS. I think the only better Dunkel I've had is Weihanstephaner, although I've never had one fresh in Germany. I hadn't seen this particular Dunkel before and bought a single bottle. I thought the taste was pretty subdued but improved as the glass warmed. But I may not fully appreciate Dunkels. My favorite German Styles are Weizenbocks and Eisbocks.

Pours like a cup of black coffee with a two finger tan head that fades to a thin layer that lingers. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Flavors of rich coffee, chocolate, and caramelized raisins. Hints of vanilla and bourbon.

Pataskala Red X IPA by Stone Brewing, ABV 7.3%, IBU 75, SRM 18
    [IMG]

Pours hazy crimson amber with a one finger head that deminishes to a thin layer that lingers. Aromas of citrus and dank wet leaves, with Spice a floral notes. Flavors are much the same with a sweetness of toffee that evolves to an unusual saline during an extended linger.

My first of the style was either called Rommeldeus or was brewed by a brewery called that. At the time I was a Guinness dork, and just wanted something dark, because I thought only dark beers were good. So, at a pub in Lübeck, finding this Rommeldeus-thing the only dark beer available, I ordered and my mind was blown.
