Is there a beer out there where you enjoy its normal version more than its barrel-aged cousin?

For me, it's Prairie BOMB. Do not get me wrong. Barrel Aged BOMB is a great beer but I felt it was overly sweet. The booziness of the barrel muted the chocolate, coffee, and vanilla flavors I enjoy so much on the regular BOMB and did not amplify them as I was hoping it would.

Curious to see if there are any other instances when regular > BA

    Thanks and Cheers my people!

When I read the title, my first thought was Bomb. Regular Bomb has so much going for it. BA Bomb just felt a little played out. Maybe it was the hype that wasn't met, but for me, it didn't deliver.

Entirely debatable, but I'll go with Founder's Breakfast Stout, Yeti, all of the Evil Twin "Break" beers, and Stone RIS right off the bat.

    There's a ton.

Grimm Double Negative > BA Double Negative or Maple BA Double Negative.

    Blackout > BA Blackout.

Siberian Night > BA Siberian Night

    Speedway > BA Speedway

    Darkness > BA Darkness

Expedition > Black Note (though it does have Double Cream in it too, thought it was still worth mentioning)

Dark Horse Tres Blueberry > BA Tres Blueberry

    B.O.R.I.S. > BA B.O.R.I.S

    etc.

    Another vote here for Bomb.

I'll add Bourbon Barrel Arrogant Bastard as well.

I Couldn't agree with these two more. Regular Speedway is pretty much perfection in a bottle.

    Black Albert > Cuvee Delphin

Tried Cuvee Delphin first and thought "Hah...standard...not bad... nice..." and tried Black Albert and it blew my mind.

    BA Double NEgative REALLY?!!!!! Blasphemy

I would have to say Any IPA!

    2014 IST > 2014 BA IST
    2015 IST < 2015 BA IST

some of the stuff depends on the year for me

That's funny--for me it was one of the very few beers I prefer barrel aged, as opposed to not.

I'll flippity flip flip flip it on ya cause i think you'll still find it interdasting, the only barrel aged beers i can think of that i like more than the regular versions are backwoods bastard and the old stock brandy barrel. Those also happen to be two of my favorite beers.

I like barrel aged beers, but as you can see very very rarely do i prefer them to their reggie versions.

Nailed it on the Double Negative and Speedway Stout.. I was especially surprised with the BASS, I had big expectations since regular Speedway is so damn good!

I disagree on Plead the 5th- it's a great beer, but Bourbon Barrel Plead the 5th is one of the most perfect BA stouts for me. To each their own, though!

BA Speedway is certainly great, but it is really hard to top regular Speedway (unless it's Vietnamese Speedway, which is possibly the most perfect coffee beer ever).

Well, different beer (similar, though) but I was thinking of KBS.
When it first came out people swore it was the same base beer, but in recent years that doesn't seem to be the case...or at least not anymore.

As I understand it, KBS is not BA Breakfast Stout, but the base for KBS is pretty similar to Breakfast Stout, just tweaked to be a better base for barrel-aging. I think the base for CBS is actually Breakfast Stout, though.
