I went into one of my beer haunts yesterday and was looking around. Saw two four-packs of KBS sitting on the shelf. Did a double take. First time I've seen it on the shelf. Score.

In general I agree, but it seems dependent on the age of the KBS. Older KBS isn't as good as fresh for my palate, somewhat similar sentiments for Parabola though I feel it holds on better longer than KBS. To each their own, cheers.

Went to the release at Founders, they had 14, 15 and 16 on tap. Tried all 3 and 16 was my favorite, followed by 14.
I was surprised but it tastes the smoothest.

Seemingly, it depends on where you are.

Interesting to hear. I've now tasted 16 from tap and bottle, and definitely prefer 15 to it. I haven't had 14, but plan on having it later this week (as well as 13 I believe). I'll try to post my comments afterwards.

Spotted at WF in Santa Cruz. Founders has been good to our little town. AJ's in Soquel had cases of it earlier.

I picked up a 4 pack for $20.99 at my local store. I love them because they never inflate the price of rare beer or liquor. They hold a rare bourbon raffle every year in December. Everything is always MSRP, including the entire Van Winkle line!

Yeah, I'm on the list. Last year my shop got one case, it wasn't until mid april though.

Saw it at two stores in the 603 today, both had several cases priced at 23/4pk first come first served no limit basis....
I passed on it and bought some Stoneface Hopulization instead. Delicious.
    Happy hunting everybody.

And with Founders at least, they make solid product across the board so shops getting saddled with All Day or Breakfast Stout are in much better shape than they are with other breweries. At least it's something people will buy. Every shop around here was telling me how much they had to swallow to get some Nugget Nectar

If I run across an opportunity, is KBS good enough to buy a bunch without having the opportunity to try it? I like BCBS so can I presume so?

It's a favorite beer for many on this site, and especially this thread, but good luck being able to buy "a bunch." Many places will just allow "a couple."

I have five bottles locked in, but may have a chance at more at a local store.

Had a '16 last night and an '11 the night before. Different beers imo. I don't think age does the same thing to KBS as it does to WWS (imo, age turns WWS into a different and clearly better beer). Age makes a KBS mellower, coffee fades but it gains a chocolatey mellow quality. I like em both fresh and aged depending on what i'm looking for at that moment.

Well since you have 5 lined up, I would buy it. To me, this beer is a 99. It has what I am looking for. The coffee in your face, the bourbon on the palate, the chocolate in the aftertaste. It is a near perfect beer. I have 12 bottles in my cellar currently and will whittle it down during the course of the year. I never usually buy a lot of rarer things but KBS is the exception. I have a couple bottles of BCBS also, but that was due to a misinformed shop owner selling them below there price. Anyway, I am sure you will enjoy this beer if you do like BCBS. It has a similar feel but a bit more layers imo.

I thought tied in sales were illegal in Michigan, @DrunkMcGruff. Tied in sales being where a retail store requires the purchase of alcoholic beverage one to purchase alcoholic beverage two in the same transaction.

To keep the thread on track, I'm amazed at the variance in availability around the country. Founders really seemed to make a big marketing and social media push for this year's nationwide KBS release. Hopefully their newest expansion creates plenty of capacity to flood some of these low-quantity markets in the future.
