I'm tired of this bastard of a hop turning good hoppy beers into onion bombs.

    Discuss.

Summit's are a very high Alpha Acid hop, often over 16%. It works well as a background player (for me), but when used to excess, it gives me a distinct green onion / chive flavor which tends to be a turn off.

This green onion / chive flavor also seems to ramp up as the beer it is in ages.

I remember buying Oskar Blues Gubna years ago (initial release). Tasted like rotten garlic/putrefied onion. Bought a second can just to be sure I wasn't crazy. Never tried it again.

Also got onion-y notes from the first few Enjoy By IPAs.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are a few onion bombs that I could try besides the two listed here. I love all things food and drink. Would like to taste some of these. Thanks and cheers!!

Yeah it's gross. But is that just how summit is or is it the amount used? I have definitely got that garlicy thing from citra hops too. Makes me think it's more about how much is used rather than just being a dominate characteristic.

Devil Dancer is tastes like chives to me, though I am not sure if Summit is used.

When I saw the thread title I misread "Summit" as the name of a brewery rather than the name of a hop, and wondered what kind of beer would end up named "Hop Hate." Whoops. XD

Is the whole certain hops tasting like onion thing sort of like how cilantro tastes like soap to some people? I've never gotten that flavor in an IPA before.

I think there's definitely some of that going on.

That was always my thought about the whole hop/onion phenomenon, since I've never experienced it in beers where others have complained, like Hop Ranch. But I've also never heard it tied to the Summit hop specifically, so now I'm curious if I would notice it.

Green Flash Imperial IPA should fit the bill.

Gubna is no longer brewed using Summit Hops.

Below is from the Oskar Blues website:

    “The Gubna.

Each year GUBNA is reinvented with a new hop bill. Concurrent hop selection panels at both the Colorado and North Carolina breweries picked some of the season’s

highest quality and most exciting hops to load up this formidable and complex Imperial IPA. Brewed with whole-leaf Galena hops, our brewers then add Columbus and Sorachi Ace to GUBNA 5.0, which spikes the beer with spicy, blackcurrant notes and subtle citrus overtones. GUBNA is dry-hopped with prodigious amounts of El Dorado, Comet, and Chinook hops, creating a dank, dense, pineapple & lemon zest nose and unique blend of grapefruit, apricot, and herbs, while finishing clean and bitter. The GUB sits on a base of Rye, North American Pale, and Munich malts, which offers a smooth and flavorful backbone to support the gargantuan load of hops.”

Yup. Citra and cat pee are very common for cat owners from what I hear.

I know the recipe has changed. Never bought it again due to bad visual-gustatory association.

I understand. It is like when you get sick eating some food item you have no desire to eat that food again even though in all likelihood you would not have the same bad experience.

I think this was Mother Nature's way of 'training' us on which things are edible vs. not being edible. Darwinism in action!!

    Cheers!

I read it as there's a lot of hate for hoppy Summit beers and I wondered why this wasn't in the Midwest forum

I've never had a problem with the whole onion or cat pee smell with hops. I kind of get where people are coming from with this but I dig the pungent smell of summit hops and the hops that give people the cat pee smell only give me an enjoyable aroma. Lucky, I guess.

I think too much citra also makes an onion bomb. That said im not sure if ive ever had summit. Also, beerADVOCATE having a hate thread based on a beer ingredient i find a bit funny.
