I'm no fan of Syracuse, but I was cheering them on. I can't stand those Tarheels. And that Oklahoma game:grimacing: killed my 2nd bracket real dead.

Nova's D has been absolutely suffocating this whole tourney. We'll see how the final goes. Should be a great game.

Hellooooooo BA! Would have opened some sorta bomber, but I have to work in a few hours, so I'm having one of these:

Bottle from Mike. Thanks d00d. Bottled 2/4 and poured 4/3.

This is a great looking beer, with a finger of a creamy head, and a hazy orange copper color. There's a slight hop haze to it with bits of yeast. The smell is intense pine needles/pine sap with underlying citrus rind, typical of Simcoe hops. The smell of this beer leads me to believe this will be on the bitter side of the IPA spectrum...

And so it is. The carbonation is quite high which really has me feeling the bitterness. Like the aroma, lots of pine with a fair amount of citrus rind, but there's also a malt flavor -- though it doesn't add a whole lot of sweetness. Finish is sticky and dry with a lingering bitterness.

This is a really nice IPA for those who 1.) like 'em bitter and 2.) like 'em dank. The resinous, hoppy pine is all over the place in this beer. I really enjoy this, but I feel like it could use just a little more balance and/or depth, as it's lacking a bit in both. Give it a go.

    4.23/5 (rDev 0%)

    ~Rating bump because it's tasting a bit better as it's warmed up.~

Dangerous man -- chocolate milk stout
Canned 2/26 (held up very well)
Look : nice dark Hershey bar color with a huge tan head (vigorous pour)
Smell : not gettin much a little roast but I'm pretty congested
Taste: very smooth mouthfeel, some nice chocolate notes, very good for a milk stout (top 5styles for me).
Overall: I'm glad I got to try this, if it was easier for me to obtain I'd keep a supply of this in the fridge. Definitely worth trim if you have the chance.

For now, enjoy your day folks maybe I'll be back later on

Much to the displeasure of my lovely wife I cracked my first NBS beer! Hey lady, NBS waits for no one!
Courtesy of @thebeers from NBS BIF #3.
This beer has been a longtime want for me. Really excited for it.
Thin looking pour of medium brown with some ruby red highlights although looks deep chestnut brown in my glass. Lovely one finger tan head that disappears leaving a small ring of bubbles surrounding the outside.
Smells of sweet roasted nuts and chocolate. Like a Reese's pb cup.
Initial taste is great. PB, chocolate, some vanilla. Unfortunately a earthy, drying bitter finish quickly takes over. It's a shame too because the pb/chocolatiness is really good.
Not a bad beer by any means. Glad to have knocked off my list.

I wasn't too big a fan of this beer (been a while since I had it, and a bit ambivalent to PB in my beer in general), but I had to admit the imperial version was pretty decent. I maybe should give it another shot, either way, to confirm or change my thoughts.

Look at it this way. It made a lot of folks very happy and triggered a surge of sales of flavorful beer in the SE PA area. So there were some fringe benefits. :-)

    Howdy, NBSers!

I bought this one on a trip to Jester King because it said “brewed with grapes”. I didn’t realize it’s a spontaneously fermented beer relying on those grapes to make the magic happen -- the website says no yeast is added.

BeerBera fits perfectly in our idea of “sour” beer with a lot of fingernail polish aroma and flavor at first, then giving way to a sour grape/wine flavor. As it warms, the aroma opens up a lot, pushing out a much sweeter note than the flavor -- by the end of the glass, it’s very fruity, watermelon ... even watermelon candy it’s so sweet. The flavor never shows that much sweetness, but the grapes are tasty.

It’s a good brew, but much of what Prairie Artisan makes is as good or better ... and for what it's worth, it compares most closely to Prairie Artisan for me. While it has a lot of fingernail polish in it, it’s still cleaner than a Jolly Pumpkin beer; it’s nowhere near as funky/musty as a Jester King beer.

Around here there's the ABC crowd (anybody but Carolina), and coach K has been stepping in some poop this year. I am a long suffering Wake Forest fan. Carolina has an embarrassment of riches player-wise and they seem to be getting better game by game. Villanova reminds me of some of the great Duke teams; defense and great passing. Should be a great game. Back with some beer related comments in a while. Cheers.

Good morning BAs. I've been on a bit of a beer hiatus lately (a week or so) so time to get back into the swing of things.
This morning, I'll be reviewing one of NOLA brewing's Funk series: Piety.

Named after Piety Street in NOLA's Bywater District, this American Wild Ale is loaded with Lacto and Brett for the funk while also spending some time in red wine barrels. To top it off, fermentation on tart cherries rounds out this 4% abv pucker-pimp!

A: 4.25; This pours out a murky, cherry-tinted orange with a big effervescent white head. The bubbles subside rather quickly and not much to no lace is left down the glass.

S: 4.25; Right up front, you get the lacto yeast aroma followed by tart cherry and oak. Also picking up some apple and lemony tartness as well.

T: 4.5; Oh yea! This is really nice! Harmonious mixture of sweet, tart, funk, wood all blended nicely. You really get the tartness of cherry in the sip. Notes of Brett and Lacto as well as the woodiness of the barrel and red wine are all present but just peeking through enough.

M: 4.25; Feel, as you would expect, is pretty light-bodied and at 4%, very easy-drinking. Big carbonation with a tart, dry finish.

O: 4.25; Why haven't I had this before today?. This is the best wild ale brewed here in Louisiana by far. Price point is on the higher side at $13.99 for a 750, but it is definitely worth picking up, at least to try. My overall score comes out to a 4.35, -1.1% lower than the avg of 4.40 for Piety.

    New Rrrrrrusian Imperial Stout Sunday
The only good thing about snow this time of year is that it is never around long. The sun has almost taken over control, so I may have to mow yet. Today's entry is another from the latest NBS BIF and is a Russian Imperial Stout from Coast Brewing in North Charleston, SC, and apparently I cut the top of the glass off in this picture.

    4.01/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4

Dark, oily black gentle pour produced a pretty significant frothy khaki head that settles into a hefty ring. Some glass clinging on the way down.

Smells fairly sweet. Cocoa powder is dominant. Also some licorice, tobacco, oats, and charred barley.

I would say the flavors follow suit. It is more sweet than bitter, although there is a solid bitterness. Some of it seems to come from the hops too. A lot of bitter sweet chocolate, solid ashy/charred flavor, some flaky oats, and a lot of tobacco juice on the back end with some more lingering brown sugar/molasses sweetness. No sign of the almost 10% ABV.

The body is viscous. It has a bit of oatmeal stout like chewiness to it. Carbonation is pretty much perfect. Very smooth.

A very solid RIS, but it seems to flirt with being an American Stout at times and is a hair too sweet for the style. I think it shines more in appearance and body

    Cheers!

    New IPA Sunday

    Marble India Pale Ale

Happy Sunday from wicked windy Southeastern PA. Got this one courtesy of the incredibly-generous @ONovoMexicano as part of the NBS BIF -- my first BIF or trade ever -- insanely fun.

Marble IPA pours a vibrant, hazed orange color with a finger of yellow-tinted white head that leaves decent lacing. Holding it up to the light, there's tons of little floaties. Looks great.

It's got a big grapefruit aroma with a nice whiff of white pepper behind. Upon sipping, it's medium bodied, just a little creamy, with a nice prickliness from the carbonation and flavor. The grapefruit and slight pepper are present again in the taste, although slightly more muted, with a delicious, hugely-bitter aftertaste.

Another very solid IPA from New Mexico -- and the last I was able to hold off on until today. They landed Monday and I've been enjoying these others all week...

Bosque Scale Tipper IPA: A new twist on an old-school IPA

La Cumbre Project Dank: Pretty dank, pretty bottle art, pretty awesome

Santa Fe Black IPA: Malty, piney goodness that reminded me of homebrewing

La Cumbre Elevated IPA: Perhaps my favorite of the bunch

Seems like a lot, no? No worries -- there's gallons left for next week and probably well beyond.
