In about a month, I will retire after a 40+ year working career. On my last Friday, I will be in the office in the morning, and I've decided I will be parking my big butt on the deck for the remainder of the sunny spring afternoon (and evening?) drinking beer and contemplating life, only sporadically interspersed with high quality snacks like cheeses, charcuterie, crackers, etc. What is the ideal brew (session or otherwise) for this auspicious occasion?

For some reason Saisons always fit special occasions for me. They seem fancy even though they were originally farm worker beers. I would celebrate with Sofie or Tank 7.

    Congrats on retirement.

Hmm... early May, in Kansas, gonna be beautiful to fairly warm. I'd try to get a bottle of Trillium Fort Point Pale Ale.

Or, only a state and a half away, get one of Side Project's sour releases - if you're in eastern Kansas, that's, what, a four hour drive into STL?

Would also work well to get some of Prairie's funky/sour stuff. Funky Gold Amarillo or Mosaic, or Somewhere, or Flair (their excellent Gose). That should all be relatively easily available.

First off, congrats on the acheivement...it's tough to make a recommendation without knowing your likes/dislikes...whatever you choose, I'd try to stay sessionable (session IPAs, Hefe's, some saisions) if you're planning on hanging out for a while

Congrats @Smythe! For a sunny day in Kansas i'd recommend two Weihen Hefes jammed into one large glass and a cheap bottle of scotch. Cheers!

That all depends on what you like, I agree that a nice saison would pair well with a cheese and charcuterie(spring for the Iberico Ham), but on the other hand, do you have a major want you have yet to try? If it is something that just is not available locally I am sure a kind BA would send it to you for a label. If it is something from MA let me know, perhaps I can help you out(I am not near Tree House sorry).

Visit the online seller of fine Belgian beer.
Spend a crap ton of money on gueuze, lambics, and trappists.
Pray it arrives in a month.

Hard to know what you like and what you can get. If I want to feel like I'm having something special but am not looking for some kind of rare beer, I'll go with a 750ml saison like Avec Les Bons Voeux or Fantome Saison. If I'm not afraid of acid reflux that day, maybe I'll pull out a 750ml of some lambic. I'm sure lots of folks would go with a BA Stout.

Make it good, and make sure it is enough to share, and to regret having said at least one thing while sharing it.

    Congratulations on your upcoming retirement!
It must feel good. I've been working for 38 years, and feel like I'm good for another 3-5 years.
My favorite celebratory beer is Allagash Curieux. I think it will go well with your snacks.
    Cheers!

Congrats on the retirement! Drink something good and a lot of it. (I'll second the Sofie recommendation)

I like the Sofie recommendations. I've popped open a couple of those on special occasions myself. Sofie ages well too, so you can revisit on the anniversary of your retirement. I'm partial to Belgian styles for special occasions and the Curieux suggestion was good too...love that beer! I'd consider Tank 7 as well.

I'm with this guy - I know what I like and what I can reasonably get, but your tastes may not be the same.
I would think about what your favorite comtemplative style or styles are. Get the best you possibly can - look at top 250, ratings and so forth. I bet trading folks would be willing to help out get ones that are out-of-distro for you. Maybe start light, then move to stouts and barleywines as the evening wears on.

    First off, many congratulations!!
As for the brew recommendation, it doesn't need to be something expensive or fancy/complex. It can be something simple, too, since you'll be reminded of that glorious liberation from the work force with every sip of whatever brew you choose.

I would agree with many of these folks on a bottle of Sofie or any of from that Goose Island line.
I personally like to celebrate with a very nice red wine. A blend, cab, any deep & funky Italian...but that's not on point.

I say, go to the bottle store, take a deep mindful breath, and think of all the leisure you will experience in the days to come, and pick with what your heart reaches for.

    Cheers.

If it was myself, i would go with a big belgian. Like a quad or belgian strong. Id make it a higher end and memorable. Congrats again.

    Congrats on retirement.

If the 401k is fat then you should splurge, something pricey. Something rare.

If the 401k is not where you want it to be then a sixer of IceHouse is always a good call.

All joking aside congrats and live it up!
