    Hey guys,

Thought this might be a fun topic since I've never seen it mentioned explicitly in these forums:

    >>>What is your median rating?<<<

Getting this number is actually quite easy, but takes a bit of URL manipulation. Here are the "For Dummies" instructions (these are the "For Dummies" instructions, not the "For Drunken Dummies" instructions):

1)Look in the upper right corner of your screen at your (blue) "Beers" stat number. (Add 1 to this number if it happens to be an odd number.) Take that number, and divide it by 2.

2)In the following link, replace [Username] with your username (e.g. mine is "kojevergas"), and replace [0] with the number you got from step #1 above: http://www.beeradvocate.com/user/beers/?ba=[Username]&order=ratingD&start=[0]&view=R .

For example, if you've rated 5000 beers and your username is "ImTooIgnorantForBasicURLEditing", you would enter http://www.beeradvocate.com/user/beers/?ba=ImTooIgnorantForBasicURLEditing&order=ratingD&start=2500&view=R

Now tell us: what is the rating of the first beer listed at the top of the page? This is your median rating.

Mine is 3.13 at the time of this post.

Assuming I did this right...I'm at 3.82. Seems a little high, maybe I'm easily impressed.

I love shit like this. Thanks for making the URL manipulation easy for everyone. I also looked at my rDev, since I think it's interesting to see that too.

    Median rating: 3.86
    Median rDev: +1.3%

Altogether not too surprising in my mind- I tend to rate particular styles such as lagers and so forth higher than many other users, but I tend to agree mostly with the crowdsourced opinions. The median rating is actually quite a bit higher than I expected- I was guessing it'd fall closer to 3.6 based on my own estimates.

I keep a beer database on my machine too, so it's easy to compare medians to averages:
    My Avg rating: 3.796
    My Avg rDev: +1.9%
    BA Avg rating: 3.72

The avg rating is a bit higher than my guesses too, but not substantially so. What this shows is that the general distribution of my ratings is skewed. This really isn't surprising, since they'd all cluster around something anyways.

I made a scatterplot of my ratings against BA with a slope of y = 0.9179x + 0.3763 an r-squared of .818, so altogether decent agreement between myself and the rest of the crowd. If you think of how crowdsourced reviews work in general, this isn't very surprising- many of us all average out in the end. Much of the variation came with lower rated beers, while there was much more consensus amongst higher rated ones. In general I rate slightly higher than the average BA.

Depends on the style, I rate AAls numerically lower as a class.

    Literally like 5min of excel.

It'd actually be really nice to be able to essentially download the data contained on your 'beers' page into an excel file so for the statsy/mathy/computer sciencey types of us out there can fuck around with everything like this easier than manually updating it.

@Beric, I'm not a sciencey/mathy type at all, though, so just looking at those numbers seems overwhelming to me. I never made it past high school trig, and geometry was the only kind of math I was ever actually good at (probably because it was the most "artsy," drawing all those shapes and angles :grinning:). So looking at that post just makes my head explode.

I was impressed with the OP's hacker kung fu until this dude dropped the word "scatterplot," and now I just feel like an 8 year old.

3.93. Thanks for setting this up. This seems like an important number to know. Definitely something to consider in rating in the future.

3.83, interesting but I have certainly had way more world class than bottom of the barrel beers so that is not too surprising.

3.77 at 1,011 beers deep. I actually expected it to be higher based on the fact that I rate more to style which tends to result in higher ratings for many of the less popular styles.
