So I had a beer share at my house. Everybody brought some pretty good bottles. At the end eight maids a milking was left sitting in the fridge when the person who brought it grabbed it and said he was gonna take it. I didn't really bother me that much but my brother that was there told me that you normally leave bottles that you bring. What do you guys think? Are there any unwritten laws when it comes to beer sharing? Lol

Always leave the bottles you bring.

Unless you bring bottles to a mutual meeting spot such as a restaurant, then you may take home your unopened bottle.

Yeah I wouldn't take back my bottles. Maybe ask to come back and share it soon.

If I bring beer over I leave anything I bring. Many times I leave a good bottle or two. It all comes back around with my circle. Most times its still sitting there next time I come by. If its something you really wanted to try/drink you should open it first. If you cant leave it maybe you should not bring it. I look at it as an extra for the host.

    Enjoy

Leave it. Unless they ask me to take it with me. Even then i will casually forget it

I agree. I have left several really great bottles but it all comes around as the times I hosted I ended up with some pretty great bottles. But as Giantspace pointed out I usually leave it for the next time around or take it with me to another hosted tasting so everyone gets a chance to enjoy it as well. Personally I hate drinking good beer alone.

I guess it depends on if he brought anything else and if he drank other people's beer. But even then, he really should have left the beer.

I'm usually not 'that guy' bringing back the bottles I bought with me. But as suggested before invite me next time

People who do that are rarely invited anymore. Cheapskate. Selfishness.

Even if it is a cookout or a dinner party it is bad etiquette to leave with anything other than what is offered to you by the host (with the exception of empty serving trays you've brought, etc).

Kind of depends on the reaction it got. I've been known to bring over 6 packs (some possibly too adventurous for the crowd) and the response is lukewarm, so I take back whatever's left of them if no one was really into it. Gotta give it a good home. :grinning: But if people liked them, I usually let them keep the other bottles and get "paid back" with cigars, more beer, etc the next time we hang out.

I think it depends. I had 3 people come over as part of a tasting group but they brought a lot of stuff. More than the other 4 of us combined, and I was the host. Plus, they wound up leaving 3 cans and a bomber behind, but took back 3 can's (3 of which we've all had numerous times). I didn't mind this or find it rude at all and was very happy to get to try 2 of the can's which I hadn't previously had before, again while sober, and to get to try Second Fiddle again on a fresh palate. They also brought over a decent amount of food. Am I really to complain about this? Hah.

On the other hand, if it's one of your first tastings with a group and you brought something super nice to share, then decide you're going to head out early, that's a dick move.

I think it's fine if it's a two person tasting. I have a fairly regular session with a buddy of mine. We usually bring more than we can drink to each session. But again, it's just two people.

You don't bring a dish to a dinner party and ask for your own leftovers, right? Same rules apply.

    Plus, it's good karma!

I never, ever plan on bringing anything back home. If we don't get to it right away, I'm confident that we will soon enough.

Not meaning to hijack the thread...But would anyone's answer change if the person in question had brought a growler and took that home unopened?

I would probably leave it personally but it really depends on the situation (I had a friend bring like 8 bombers to a share where everyone else brought 2, so if there was 1 beer left that he brought I would have no issue with him taking it home).

If I were the host, and wasn't planning on having another share within the next few days, I would offer it back to the one who brought it so they can enjoy it fresh. That's a good question though.

Beer nowadays is a healthy investment for a "rare" beer the fact that they bring this beer over to share means they intend on drinking it, but say someone pases out or is too hammered to enjoy a rare brew, y not take it back and save for a later day
