holy crap they only have a problem with their product a few times per half decade... sounds like a great track record!!

after youve been around for a while you might start to adopt the mindset of an intelligent consumer .... "gee, we live in a developed nation and theres this thing called quality control."

Nice. Even though I have been enjoying fine beer for 40 years, and brewing it and studying it for 25 years, I do hope to learn more. And despite your reply above, I even consider it possible you may as well. Here's to us both learning more. Cheers!

If you're offended by that bad of a track record, I expect you to not be a hypocrite and only drink beer from a brewery who hasn't had a single infected beer in 5 years. So, what are you having tonight, Miller Lite or Bud Light? Those are pretty much your only options...

I can see we've devolved to the point of critical . obviously a company that claims to produce a superior product is held to a higher standard. but actually yes, I do admire the consistency of some of the larger brewing companies, but plenty of non-corporate breweries have also nailed down the consistency aspect.

I, for one, am looking forward to further lectures from a student who just joined BA last year and has all of 19 posts to his name.

If only people could read, wouldn't that be nice? In the last infection thread, it came up that even with advanced quality assurance protocols, infected beer can happen. It's an inherent risk to having a barrel aging program. But nah dude, quality control. What about these other mega-corporations that have recalled products? Are you honestly ignorant enough to believe they don't have extensive quality control methods? It happens. Slamming them for something that has happened to multiple breweries multiple times seems strange (couldn't be those pesky biases again, could it?). If this happened to your favorite cinderella-story micro brewery you'd forgive them and probably even sing praises if they gave out refunds.

What happened to Goose Island says nothing about the company, nor AB. It is a risk brewers take by having a barrel aging program. It's that simple. It could happen to anyone. I'm going to buy Bourbon County again this year because I understand the concept of recency bias, and that just because an infection happened last year in no way changes the probability of it happening in 2016.

i thought we already accepted barleywine is a different beer than the stout, meaning it can't ≠a single base.

Then as an intelligent consumer you'll want to not buy any barrel aged beer ever since what has happened to GI has happened to other breweries before and will happen to other breweries in the future. It's not a poor quality control issue, it's an inherent risk of having a barrel aging program that despite careful laboratory testing and repeated taste testing, off flavors can develop weeks or even months after bottling and shipping. What poor quality control gets you is a much higher frequency of beers developing off flavors than GI has had. The bottom line is that the only way you can be certian of no off flavors developing is to not have a barrel aging program at all.

In SE Michigan, BCBS was quite scarce. Plenty of stores with single bottle limits, taking care of regulars, and abnormally high prices made it take a lot of work to get more than a couple bottles.

Hard to compare the two, ones a great coffee stout the other isn't. They're not the same beer.
