any reason why they went from a short bottle to a tall bottle?

Is it that much taller? But my first explanation is that it's now brewed and imported (to the U.S.) directly from Dublin. The older incarnation was brewed in Canada for the U.S. Nothing more than marketing.

I think it's better now, fwiw.

Also FWIW, I always liked the ES. When I first tried the new, direct from Dublin ES, I didn't find a huge difference -- except maybe the new rendition being a little less lactic or sour -- something I always liked in ES.

Nevertheless, I'll always pick up an ES when the mood strikes (and it's one of the few beers my wife likes to share -- more's the better, no?).

Not the first time that Guinness Extra Stout imported into the US from Ireland was in a "less than 12 ounce" bottle - here's the label (below left) used in the 1970s-80s - "11.39 FLUID OZS":

Before that, when the only Guinness exported to the US was Foreign Extra Stout, the labels read "11.5 US FLUID OZ." (above right, circa early 1950s)
