In the spirit of 'Mock Drafts' and this Thursdays NFL Draft... What would be your 'Craft' Draft board? I admit, I totally stole this from a local radio bit, they did it with candy bars (Reese's cups was unanimous #1)

Anyway, to fall in line with their rules and to make this more realistic. What makes your 'Prospect' highly rated is how cheap it is, how easy it is to obtain and of coarse overall quality. If you live 2 minutes away from say 'Three Floyd's' then, Zombie Dust totally counts. However, this isn't just a 'Top 10' list. Your prospects are based on... Value, Availability and Quality.

This is obviously all silly and for fun. Lets keep it positive, informative and carefree. Feel free to make your board as big or small as you wish. Any style(s) are open, Seasonal's are fine. Rare or specialties= Troubled Prospects!

    I'm going to do 10 and pros/cons...

    10 Genesse Bock
Pros: Dirt, DIRT! cheap and widely available
Cons: Just honestly not that great compared to the field, needs work

9 Willoughby Peanut Butter Cup Porter
Pros: Available in crowlers/Growlers on my way to work,
Cons: I have to stop in brewery and commit to full growler, a raw project

    8 Founders All Day
Pros: Widely Available and priced right on 15 packs. Cans a plus
Cons: Will never be anything special, low ceiling

7 Stevens Point Whole Hog Pumpkin
Pros: Great tasting autumn beer at a really good price
Cons: Seasonal and sometimes requires some searching, only works hard when it wants too

    6 Columbus IPA
Pros: $8.99 per 6 and available at most stores
Cons: Not always fresh and has Julian date, never be a hall of famer

    5 Lagunitas Sucks
Pros: Great price and availability, high ceiling
Cons: Sometimes old bottles and a hard to read dates

    4 Stone Enjoy By
    Pros: Amazing product, always fresh
Cons: slightly pricey and not always around when you want it, not always available in the clutch

    3 Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Pros: Price, quality, availability, a true leader
Cons: Can be mundane after a few

    2 Founders Porter
Pros: Great value, excellent product, always available, best in its field
Cons: Have to be in the mood for it

    1 Bells Two Hearted
Pros: Quality, Value, Availability, usually fresh, instant plug and drink, no project here, unlimited potential
Cons: Virtually none, as long as its fresh

Goofy, but fun... I'm going Reese's too with 'Snickers' and 'Take 5' vying for the #1 spot.

Too hard with individual beers, so I'm doing breweries. I'm also including player equivalents:

    1) Beachwood BBQ/Blendery - future franchise QB (Andrew Luck)
    2) Modern Times - 5 tool player on both sides of the ball (J.J. Watt)
    3) Firestone Walker - great pedigree and a safe pick (Megatron)
    4) Stone - Explosive and unpredictable. Can win you many games single-handedly, but might lose you a few (Marcus Mariota)
    5) Bottle Logic - high ceiling; the sky is the limit (Todd Gurley)
    6) Deschutes - plays the game "the right way" and is a real "student of the game." (Peyton Manning)
    7) Left Hand - deceptively innovative and creative in the open field. Slightly dependent on gimmicky plays, but could excel in the right system (Tavon Austin)
    8) Sierra Nevada - Clearly too old, but can start immediately (Chris Weinke)
    9) Fieldwork - might sit for a year, but will learn on the bench and be ready next year (Carson Palmer)
    10) Logsdon - fell back later and is a steal later in the draft (Aaron Rodgers)

These could go in any order for me depending on the occasion but i usually go with whats freshest. My #1 pick if i'm at the beach or the bar probly wont be the same if i'm ice fishing. I dont usually drink Pineapple Sculpin bottles but its hard for me to pass up it up when i see it on tap. Sometimes i choose it over Duet, Space Dust and some of my other favorites.
I dont drink Pliny very often but still, if these were all sitting in front of me i would probly taste it first.

    1. Pliny the elder ( or whichever of my top 10 is freshest could go #1),
    2. Karl Strauss - Aurora Hoppyalis
    3. Elysian - Space dust
    4. Firestone Walker - Union Jack
    5. Firestone Walker - Luponic Distortion No. 001
    6. Alesmith - Tony Gwynn .394
    7. Alpine - Duet
    8. Bells - Hopslam
    9. Founders - Azacca
    10. Founders - Centennial
    11. Port - hop 15
    12. Firestone Walker - Double Jack
    13. Dogfish Head - 90 min.
    14. Rip current - Red Flag Double ipa (only had once on tap and it was one the best Dipas ive had)
    15. Alpine - Nelson
    16. Sculpin/gf/pineapple
    17. Alesmith - Speedway Stout
    18. Lattitude 33 - Blood orange ipa
    19. Alpine - Hoppy Birthday
    20. Abita - Purple Haze
I could Keep going and i'm sure i left out some of my favorites that i cant remember right now. (Port - Mongo should go somewhere on there in the middle of the first round.)

I think Double Jack at #12 is like Aaron Rodgers dropping in the draft...a steal!

Pliny at #1? Just like Alex Smith...a bit overrated.

No Waldos Special Ale? That's a top 10 pick that looks like its going in the second round!

I think Bells Two Hearted at #1 is over-drafting a little. Its good, but a #1? Its a late first rounder at best on my draft board.

Also, a pumpkin beer in the top #10? That is like drafting a punter in the top 10. I just don't see the value/potential with that pick.

I agree with you but the places where i usually shop closest to my house only have the bombers of double jack and they order so many of them that alot of them dont get drank within 60 or 90 days so they dont get fresh ones in very often.. im glad you said that and im going to tell them about it. im going to tell them to get the 4 packs actually.

    2. Alesmith IPA (absolutely worth the 12.99, even months old)
    3. Fat Head's Sunshine Daydream
    4. Founders Mosaic Promise
    5. Stone IPA
    6. Columbus IPA
    7. Ballast Point Grunion

Mock Draft--Hop (Bottles only)-- Nor Cal/East Bay

    1) Lagunitas Waldos --Makes you say wow! Truly special. Makes any fridge better, now!
    2) FW Walker Union Jack-- Fresh it is remarkable. Can hang any time of the year! Quintessential!
    3) Sierra Nevada Pale Ale -- Truly all-pro and all purpose, no huge #'s, but a first ballot HOF.
    4) FW Double Jack -- QPR isn't as good as 1-3, but this beer is probably the best all around DIPA.
    5) Lagunitas Sucks -- Fresh and found pretty much everywhere. Solid #5 pick.
    6) Sierra Nevada Torpedo -- Cans and bottles. Versatile, and can be had anywhere.
    7) Stone Enjoy By -- The new lower price point moved this up from 10 to 7.
    8) RR Pliny the Elder -- A little overrated, but great. A plus is the bottle availability near me.
    9) Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter -- This is a head turner that will change many minds on IPA's. Great QPR and availability. On any given day, this could be taken in the top 5.
    10) Stone Arrogant Bastard -- Not Pale, but now canned at a great QPR. This is an all-pro, future HOF pick. Has to go to the "right" fridge.

    Outside the top 10

    11) Oskar Blues Deviant Dales -- QPR is decent, but a case can be made for it to crack the top 10. If Union Jack isn't available, this the next best, easily had 8% hoppy beer.
    12) Modern Times Booming Rollers -- Out of the gate, its great. Good QPR, Up and coming. Staying power is questionable. Coverage is getting better this year.
    13) Lagunitas IPA -- Solid IPA, great beer for a party. Can be had at most bars around here.
    14) Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale-- Stovepipe or 12oz cans. Great distribution. QPR recently better as price has gotten better.
    15) FW Luponic Distortion -- Fantastic flavor, but a little undersized. For $10 a 6'er, its tough to make it a regular purchase.

And Lagunitas was my first love but i barely ever drink it anymore due to a change of pallete... I Grabbed a sixer of the Waldos and gave most of them away... i get it why everyone loves it. Its too sweet for me, Its sweeter than brown shugga, sucks, hairy eyball. it had really good hop flavor but im not sure whats up with all that sweetness in most of their brews... they may over do it a little with the caramel malt or somethin?? I still give Waldos and alot of Lagunitas brews high ratings i just dont drink them much anymore. i was drinking it next to space dust and reg sculpin and they were both way more pleasant. I would draft Waldos in the second round Hes definately a super star caliber brew but has alot of issues ... I wouldnt be surprised if he gets suspended for failed test or gets in trouble with the law (DUI).

    10. Night Shift - Whirlpool - still a bit too scarce
    9. Maine - MO - price and format keep it from the top 5.
    8. Peak - Fresh Cut - great beer, good price, cans
    7. Wormtown - Be Hoppy - availability up
    6. Mayflower - Porter - underrated gem
    5. Lagunitas - Little Sumpin' Sumpin' - never lets me down. Price is creeping up.
    4. Trillium Congress Street & variants - only price/format keeps it from #2
    3. Trillium - Fort Point Pale Ale & variants - availability is up now, price a bit high (but less than Congress)
    2. Alchemist - Heady Topper - would be #1 with more availability, but since I have a house in VT...
    1. Jack's Abby - Hoponious Union - great beer, great price, now in cans

Note: This was hard for me, as I mostly consume beers that aren't sold at the local shop. Also, no Treehouse, but when the new brewery comes online, this list changes. Price is better than any Trillium offering.

I think the sweetness is a "character" issue with some of their brews, but Waldos just works. Born Yesterday was another fantastic beer, but we are talking about right now. I can't see Waldos slipping past #5. Why? There isn't a better 3xIPA with a fantastic QPR ($12 a 6'er). You won't find top talent like that in the late rounds or even at the end of round one. It goes early...deservedly. It's a beer that's ready to make an impact now!

In my best Mel Kiper Jr. voice:

"If someone thinks Waldos is a stretch at #1, it seems to me like someone doesn't want a flavorful, aromatic, and spectacular impact beer in their cooler...right now. I know Pliny the Elder is the "sexier pick" at #1, I just think the price is a little high for what you're potentially getting. Waldo's is like a once-a-decade top offensive tackle: big, graceful, and special. Will it turn into a Jackie Slater or Jonathan Odgen? Only time will tell, but it has all the tools to be a legend."

Believe me, I'm not truly sold on pliny at #1 either... I never know what to pick at #1 and my mind changes all the time... I just dont think you can go wrong with Pliny... Its a solid impact player and would fill one of my biggest needs right now. My only knock is it doesnt always show up in big games when you need it to. But definetely a player I want it on my team...
