Have not traded in a while until recently and was very surprised the last two visits. Each time I've been asked, " And what are we shipping today?"

Never once in the last did they ask and of course I had the standard answers ready.

What's the deal with this becoming standard now? Have they become enlightened to beer trading?

I can't imagine they are that concerned with beer specifically. Although it may be a general trend to see if someone slips up and makes it clear they're shipping something they shouldn't be.

Pretty sure most of this kind of questioning is driven by the local FedEx manager.

My local has been populated by a particularly dickish manager that showed up sometime in the past year. I've gotten everything from "you can't use that brand new non-FedEx box" to shaking the box vigorously to what you experienced with questions about liquids. I've been going here for eight plus years & the lines of questioning are brand new.

So no, not standard, but I believe certain company men just can't help themselves.

A favorite: "personal lubricant". A low key answer, but usually stops questions cold.

I go with anything from "just a care package" to "olive oil".

Making small talk with the Fedex employee goes a long way towards distracting them. Bring up the weather or local sports team, even general questions about shipping. Small children, particularly noisy ones, also go a long way towards avoiding unnecessary questions.

Fedex employee once said to me "man, you bearded guys sure ship a ton of olive oil"!

    True story.

My local shop started doing this a lot as well. I've been telling the that it is collectable Coke bottles. If they ask more I say I by them at flea markets cheap but they go for like 10-15 bucks a piece on Ebay (which for some reason they actually do). Usually ends the questions there.

    1) Create a FedEx account
    2) Package beer, create a label
    3) Drop off at FedEx and never get asked that question again

That doesn't always work. I have been stopped a few times with them asking questions. My two usual locations have stepped up the questions or have been having more issues with the box. In fact one time, the guy stopped me and gave me the third degree and even took to shaking the box.

I recently have been using OfficeMax. The one near me told me I could just drop it on a cart. Now they barely acknowledge I am there.

I've shipped from Packing Depots and FedEx and have never had that happen. I would of asked that gentlemen if he does that with everyone's box who prepackages? That's a bit overboard and uncalled for.

Just happened again this morning. I have an account with FedEx that clearly states I ship bbq sauce. Going to try the other store in town next time. Maybe it is just the store manager.

I recommend a Parcel Post or Shipping Depot. You literally set your box on the floor and walk out. People behind the counter don't even notice me anymore lol.

A valid question for an employee that shakes your box deliberately.

"If you broke my box by shaking it like that, would you personally pay for it or would your direct supervisor?"

My packaging is not a challenge to FedEx store managers.
