I ended up emailing FFF just to suggest they handle early entry a little differently next year. I received a response maybe...10 or 15 minutes after filling out the form on their site (nice job, guys!). They apparently had to beef up security this year due to changes (I'm assuming in Indiana legislature or something), and are blaming the confusion on an overwhelmed security force. They said they're looking into fixing it for next year. *crosses still-wet fingers*

    "It's just beer..."
    HOW DARE YOU?!

As I was leaving the hot sauce line and heading to the FFF tap I clearly overheard one guy say to another "Should we offer $350 this time?" and watched him jog on over to someone that had recently walked out from picking up their allotment.

As I noted above, I'm not sure that's true. I'm also do not find it super compelling to say that if a person is willing to break a single law, they are willing to break all laws, but hey, I'm happy to learn you're a mass murderer!

Anyway, kidding. Like I acknowledged, I think reselling beer is gross and basically every brewer I have ever heard comment on the matter seems to agree. The illegality is just one additional thing that would keep me from doing it.

If you want to legally ship alcohol across state lines (hell, maybe even within state lines, but I'm not sure), you need a license. That's at least what I've come to learn. So, those of us trading across state lines are breaking the law, but one that nobody really has the time/energy to enforce (they will stop large retailers from doing such things, though, as they see $$$ involved with that). And, I'd say the same is true for someone selling a bottle of beer...there's probably less desire to stop that if it's an person transaction.

So, if you're a trader, it looks like heavy crimes are right around the corner for you!

also, still don't get receiving $400 for beer being bad but receiving beer that is probably worth $400 on the secondary market being okay.

Well, in a related concept, I'd be a proponent of $ for $ trades rather than trades made based on perceived .rar.

EDIT: Thanks for passing the article along. I only wish they'd reference whatever statute(s) supposedly make it illegal to ship without a license.

It's insane to me that people would pay, and do pay more than double what one of these beers is "worth" (I assume $50 for the cost), unless they know for a fact that they can mark it up even MORE to some other poor sap. Obviously given that I've never had any version of vanilla, maybe I'm just missing out on how god-like and life-changing those beers are, but I can't imagine there's a beer out that worth that much. Just hanging out in line sharing bottles of random shit really helps you broaden your horizons, and put all these "whalez" in perspective.

I thought actually in this thread someone said there were undercovers standing outside of the gates seeing if people would sell their beer, and if they did they lost all their beer, made no money, and were potentially arrested. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know about the illegality of shipping, I thought it was just against the law to do so through USPS as well.

Edit: going to have to read that article now.

And I don't get how getting $400 for a beer is any more incentive to steal than the promise of getting $400 in whalez.

    Shitlords gonna shitlord.

Leave it to the good ole' annual DLD thread to spark another debate regarding the moral and legal sides of buying, selling, trading, black market price gauging, stealing and many more fun topics related to the craft beer world, namely Dark Lord and other rare beers/variants.

That would be interesting if confirmed. I thought I'd done a good job of following this thread from day one, but certainly may have missed that in over 100 pages of posts.

I definitely agree there are some people (shitlords, as you accurately call them) who would steal to trade for whalez, but there is also obviously an industry of people that attend DLD who don't give a flying you-know-what about the beer and are there to resell and steal just as a business venture.

I wouldn't mind if they went back to GA passes. I had GA last year and loved it, bottle share and guest taps all day long.

This was my first DLD and I enjoyed the bottle share aspect - both prior to the event and during the event - more than the guest taps. I think a buddy of mine used one of his tickets for a drink of mine, but I came back with five unused tickets and still had an absolute blast. I'm guessing bottle sharing improves when the weather is nice, as it won't be super congested in specific areas (e.g. tents) and it will be much easier to move around and share bottles.

I think that could be a pretty killer time if you're a local. Camp out, hang out in line until you get to the actual gate, then go sleep it all off in a ditch?

Oh, sorry, I forgot my requisite "and eat at White Castle!!!!" post.
