I have an opportunity to grab a bottle of Stillwater PVW BA folklore. My hesitation is that is 16 bucks, there are only 3 reviews and the ratings hover around 4. Now this is the only Pappy beer I've seen/had access to. Should I pull the trigger?

Yea and pick me up a bottle. I'd love to try it. Let me know and we can work something out.

You have access to a beer aged in PVW and you're asking BAs whether or not you should buy it? Did you pass up any 'loons on the shelf as well?

IMO I did not like the regular Folklore. But since everyone creams their pants on this site when they see PVW its probably worth a try, especially if you've had and enjoyed regular Folklore

OP's asking if he should pull the trigger on a $16 beer. You want him to buy another AND send it to you?

I opened this thread expecting it to be about the folklore that Pappy barrels automatically produce elixir excellence. (Edit: That may very well happen.)

You're asking if you should buy the barrel-aged variant of a beer you didn't like? No, no you shouldn't, unless you think the things you didn't like would be mellowed by aging or overshadowed by the barrel.

And the fact that it's aged in PVW should be completely and utterly meaningless for this decision.

Pinocchio's in Media, they still had close to a case. Thanks for the input guys. Decided to grab one. For the record, I have no problem spending money on beer, I bought four bottles of Fruet. $16 for 375ml just seemed a bit steep for not having outstanding reviews.
Pissing in pappy barrels won't turn it into gold
And yes, I'd pass on loons all day, everyday. Sours are gross

I'm just poking fun at all the people who go nuts over PVW beers on BA, lol

i'm consistently impressed by how people who:

    - aren't bourbon drinkers or aficionados
    - have probably never had pvw of any kind
    - couldn't pick out pvw from w.l. weller in a double blind taste test

suddenly become expert connoisseurs once a few droplets of the magic juice is leached into some oft-shitty stout tossed in the used barrels of said juice.

OMG THIS BREWERY I HAVE PREVIOUSLY NEVER CARED ABOUT ACQUIRED PVW BARRELS. BUY, MORTIMER, BUY

I'm not the OP. I didn't ask if I should buy the PVW version of a beer I didn't like. I'm just saying I personally didn't the original, so I wouldn't like the PVW BUT if the OP has had the original then he probably will like PVW.

What's even funnier is that some brave souls are paying as much for a barrel aged beer as they do for an entire bottle of Lot B or PVW 15.

in a way, that's exactly what the thread's about.

OP, the category of "PVW aged beers" is a meaningless one. if you don't like the beer at all, you probably won't like the BA version. also, if you like it aged in PVW barrels, chances are you would have liked it aged in any other kind of bourbon barrels.

For 16 bucks buy it, it's not a staggering amount of money. Nothing magic about PVW barrels as long as the base brew is good, IMO the barrel makes little difference. I've had great brews with other Bourbon barrels, and I didn't read anything in the OP where he stated he didn't like the base brew, just that he's never had a PVB brew. So buy it and decide for yourself.

PVW or not, most of the barrel aged stillwater offerings have been really solid. $16 a bottle is pretty expensive though.
