So, we always hear the IPA is king these days, but I'm curious: what percentage of exclusively craft beer drinkers do you think make IPA or DIPA their preferred style? I'm counting everyone from the biggest beer geek to the guy who's been drinking Boston Lager and nothing but for 20 years.

60-80 at least. IPA is the most popular craft beer style.

I'm about 70% hop forward (I prefer citrus/tropical), the other 30% is made up of stouts/porters, hefe's, tripels and helles lagers

To be clear, what I mean is if you took every craft beer drinker, and set them down in a bar where there's an A+ IPA, DIPA, stout, porter, pilsner, amber, tripel, and on down the line...what percentage go hoppy?

Most people prefer hop bombs. IPAs are the most popular craft beer style and are bringing a lot of people in.

I'll go with 50%. Big stouts and mixed-fermentation/sour beers are all the rage, too. Factor in people that flock to beers like Fat Tire and Boston Lager (which are HUGE sellers that outpace all IPA's) and you probably have 40% on that side.
The other 10% are probably fans of German, Belgian, and English imports.

It would depend on what the specific beers were. Heady vs SR71 would be a tough choice.

Why didn't you just make the poll, "Are Hop Bombs your Favorite Style of Beer" with the options "Yes" and "No".
that way you'd figure out the percentage, instead of asking people to guess what the percentage is?

I'm curious what people's perceptions of the market are, not just their personal preference.

That's not the same question. Someone may consume 90 percent of hop bombs, but not believe that hop bombs are the preference for 90 percent of the population.

No 'perception' necessary. Sales figures tell the tale. IPA is king in the craft beer World.

It's the most popular style. But what does that mean? Across 50 styles, the leader could be 20 percent, or it could be 90 percent.

I always hear the sales figures thing - but if you actually look at the top selling craft beers, they're beers like Fat Tire, Shiner Bock, Boston Lager, SNPA, Brooklyn Lager, etc.
Stone and Lagunitas are certainly selling a lot of hoppy beers, but their peers aren't necessarily reflective of what BA's tend to flock to.

I guess the people who are contesting your question/poll, are saying, why are you asking, why do you want to know this? what good with the answer bring you?

I am always surprised when we say IPA is king...when one adds up Yuengling, Sam Adams, Fat Tire etc., hard to believe it isn't ambers still.
