Dat malt bill... Guess you'd call this a strong ale?

I'm loving this trend of using wine barrels in brewing - I've had a couple beers now that have done this and they've all been complex and tasty, too bad Deschutes don't have a big presence over here otherwise I would definitely snap this up.

I had this while visiting Portland last week! I thought it was a really good beer, although I elected to buy a bottle of Black Butte XXVII instead. The oak and wine flavors were extremely present, giving it a bit of a unique flavor combined with the heavy malt. Recommended if you're at all into wine-barrel aged beers, as this may have been the best one I've had!

Anything Deschutes with wax on the top usually warrants a purchase from me. They've all been outstanding. Also fairly easy to get in SE PA. Most of their stuff is still sitting on shelves in most shops. Only two releases that really required some labor to track down were the Rye and Cognac aged versions of the Abyss.

I saw bottles of this around in Oregon today, so people in other states should see them soon. I'll wait until next month to pick up a bottle, when I have a little more money.

I think its landing in Boise today. Growler Guys had a keg of it for a tap takeover last night, so bottles today or next week.

I bought my bottle here in Eugene roughly a week ago now, so other parts of the country should definitely be getting this very soon.

Opened it yet? Curious to what this is like compared to the Sour Quad from last fall.

No, but I tried it on tap. It's not really sour at all. Think of a strong ale, with the wine flavor cutting the sweetness considerably. I got some interesting sherry and walnut flavor, and the pinot noir flavor is pretty prominent. It's an unusual beer, no doubt.

Thanks for the thread bump! You all reminded me to look for this beer, and turns out it was on tap at one of our bars.

Although I wasn't blown away, I quite enjoyed it. I noticed something different with every sip. It's fruity, malty, barrelly and vinous on initial palate, followed through by the Belgian yeast, and then finishes dry due to the tart notes. Hard to classify it, but I enjoyed it more than The Stoic. I'm glad Deschutes is still trying new things.
