Just a quick vote for Stout (burger joint just steps away from SM beach/peer). They usually have a pretty good selection. All the places with a good beach view didn't have much more than you find at a grocery store.

Since it will be 9 AM your time (12 PM here) do you have any other suggestions that are open that early that have a good tap list/serving? I initially thought Naja's but it's not open till 11.

That's pretty early! I was thinking closer to 11ish. Rockin' Crepes is cool, they usually have a great tap list.

Being up by 9 AM is another answer to the "What am I doing wrong?" question.

with all due respect, going on a TMZ star search tour is up there with going to a Celine Dion concert, or watching Sex and the City. she is going to owe you

Already does my brother. Sometimes she lets me take my balls down from the mantle and look at them.

You will be very lonely. None of us tend to be up at that time unless we are coming off a maintenance night or graveyard shift.

But, if you want a pretty solid breakfast at that time while in San Diego, could always look up Pipes in Cardiff (cash only).

@Crveballin unfortunately most of the breweries in San Diego are in industrial parks or mini strip malls. Modern Times, Pizza Boy, Stone and Coronado are the 4 that immediately come to mind that aren't. I would highly recommend convincing your wife to lift the industrial park ban...you'll miss out on Toolbox, Societe, Council, Lost Abbey, Alesmith, Cellar 3 (Green Flash sour facility), and Ballast Point just to name a small handful. Ballast Point's new facility is absolutely amazing and built to rival Stone but even still it's in an industrial area across the street from MCAS Miramar (like all the breweries in Beera Mesa)

Oops just saw that OP should have already done this trip. I hope it went well

FYI, none of the places mentioned are beer bars. The closest to that is that Animal is across the street from a burger place, Golden State. They never seems to post their beer list but randomly have some amazing stuff. For West H'wood, Surly Goat is the stand out and for Hollywood it's Blue Palms. Stout has it's charms but is pricier, has less variety of food and a skimpier draft list than BP. They're more European while BP is more Cali-hoppy oriented altho has lots of sours and Belgian-y stuff. I have very high hopes for the Phoenix on 3rd and La Cienega which I guess hasn't opened yet but is helmed by Ryan Sweeney who has opened a number of great beer bars (Surly Goat being one of them). The one place no one ever mentions is Escondite in the Arts District which is also next door to Mumford Brewing, so you get a beer and burger bar and a local brewery with minimal effort. That is, if beer bars are your priority. If it's food, that's a different story and if it's celebrities, the one thing I've learned is if you see a celebrity, it won't be one you like and you'll have nothing to say.

For celebrities, Nice Guy is the place. But you will have had to make a reservation when this thread started, and even then it'd be tough to get a good table -- unless you know someone, but since you want to see celebrities fair chance you don't know any.

The Phoenix on LaCienega and 3rd is open and is good. They have been open about 1 month, they haven't settled on their menu yet but everything they try has been in the pretty good to very good range. The merguez sausages in particular are delicious. It's a bar that serves food, not a restaurant, but you can get dinner there. The decor is upscale-- reclaimed wood floors and nice tilework etc. They do have a very impressive taplist. Not as extensive as Surly Goat, but yes same people so it's very eclectic and all winners in my mind. They have 8 or 10 taps, mostly rare or hard to find stuff including nice sours. I go there a lot because I know one of the owners -- the taplist last time I took note was: Victory at Sea; Hell or High Watermelon; Saison Dupont; Craftsman Cuvee de Masumoto; Delirium Tremens; Anchor Brotherhood Steam; SN Torpedo Pilsner (impossible to find elsewhere-except Surly Goat); Luponic Distortion. All or many of those are gone now, last time I had something else that I really liked but I'm blanking on the name because it was that time of night. Another good thing about The Phoenix is since it is so new, it's not insanely crowded yet. I'm sure it will be in a few months.

Weren't meant to be beer places. We're more for his wife's enjoyment of seeing celebrities and for the joint factor of a good meal.
