I hope this is the case. I'm a pa resident who buys most of their craft in ohio, but find it disappointing that big stouts I often look for are too hard to get with pa's archaic distribution laws and impossible to get with ohios archaic abv law.

Sadly I doubt this will come to fruition anytime soon. Pa has been petitioning for bottle shop sales for years. And while we're moving in the right direction, it's been baby steps with loopholes that retailers need to step through to do so (they also have to be a resturaunt). Eventually it'll happen, but holding your breath on things like this isn't worth waiting for.

Sounds like ohio is closer though and I hope I'm wrong and it is ratified sooner than later.

Very misleading thread title. There is a bill but we will see if it gets passed. The Senate amended a House Bill but now the House needs to pass it and the governor needs to sign it. I think the ABV cap will increase ultimately, but no one knows yet.

Hopefully it does make it! It won't really change my buying habits that much if at all, but be good for those who want those 12%+ stouts.

It did pass the senate 32-0. This is a bi-partisan bill. This should get passed at no cap. Ohio is projected to have over 200 breweries by the end of the year. Multiple major breweries passed up facilities in Ohio in the past bc of the law. This is a no brainer

Exactly. We're HOPING that Ohio is dropping the 12% law. Not in the clear yet. This is the closest we've come, but I'm not counting my chickens yet

Hopeful for you guys. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many good beers over 12% for a law like that!

With the arrival of Brewdog in Columbus, I would imagine there is some arm twisting going on to get this taken care of ASAP. I hope that we all can stand in line in Ohio on Black Friday for BCBS...

I don't know if I'd say there are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many good beers over 12%, but I'm glad that the cap will hopefully be removed soon. It'll be nice to get some Bourbon County this year or next.

What I'm more curious about is what OH breweries will come up with without an ABV cap. I can see some interesting things coming out of Jackie O's and Thirsty Dog.

I'm more excited just to see what some of the craft brewers in this state can do with a cap removal than I am getting over 12% beers from other states.

Don't get me wrong, that will be nice too, but I see the 12% cap as more of a restriction on our great craft brewers

In terms of "wayyyyyyyyy" I mostly mean a lot of the bigger BA beers, 120 Minute, etc. There certainly aren't a lot of styles weighing in over 12, but the BA stuff would be the killer for me.

And @BeerBuckeye, totally agree with you on the restriction to your brewers.

A lot? Like which ones from breweries that distribute to OH?

    Huh?

I don't know your disty footprint, but I'd imagine that the 12% law makes it less attractive for some breweries to come in. You lose out on some/most of FW's BA stuff, everything (I think?) Bourbon County, a couple things from Stone, the aforementioned DFH beer, etc. Now, I'm sure a lot of stuff wouldn't be coming even without the law, but getting rid of it at least opens Ohio up to the possibility, which is the important part.

I should have added some great beer that was over 12%. For people saying quality of beer will go down with higher abv.

You do understand that stuff over 12% represents like less than 5 percent of the output of the breweries you named, right?

Firestone Walker is the only one you named that hasn't made it to OH and I guarantee you they would love to flood our state and our mouths with Pivo, 31, Union Jack, DBA, etc. They just have a business expansion model doesn't put them into OH for the next year or so.

If anything, it's easier to expand when you can't send your super limited stuff.

I would like the abv law to go away, but wouldn't buy one beer mentioned in this thread. Most great beer is under 10 for my money.
