Gun Hill Brewing recently made some changes that you will begin to start seeing. Very excited to announce that Chris Prout, former head brewer at Greenpoint Beer & Ale Co is now the head brewer of Gun Hill Brewing Co.

Soon you will see Gun Hill moving into a different direction, moving away from the old school style of making english style or early west coast style ales to more experimental and modern beers.

A Citra/Simcoe dry hopped Saison is to be released tomorrow & two weeks from now a session IPA brewed with a copious amount of Amarillo Waimea & Rakau Hops.

I'd say that's too bad -there's nothing wrong with traditional styles (besides the fact that beer nerds don't care for them).

it's more of a move to make more styles of beers, the former head brewer made a lot of beers that he wanted to make and they all tasted pretty much the same. the locals and the management just wanted someone to branch out making different beers more regularly and experimenting more.

I've always thought it was weird when a small craft brewery's management and head brewer were not the same person.

I think in this case, the formers head brewers motives didn't having keeping the brewery afloat in mind.

I agree, but I think the sad reality of today's craft beer market is that traditional styles struggle to fit and don't move units and develop a buzz.

NYC has so many breweries & so much good beer available that if your beers arent amazing i just don't see the market being there for you, i think this is what the move and changes are about.

that being said i'm a fan of the beers chris had been making at Greenpoint and i can't wait to see him making some sours out of the bronx.

as a bronx native i can't wait to be able to grab world class beer in my own borough

I've only been to Gun Hill once and it was in the dead of winter and freezing inside; are the locals showing love? Does the place ever get packed?

I have to say this beer they did with Hamilton gave them some real publicity, plus their beers are on tap plenty of places around town. It sounds to me like some antsy investors wanted more immediate dividends, more buzz, long lines and all that jazz because otherwise it seemed like Gun Hill was doing okay with a slow and steady approach.

Local wise they have the support. They made some changes to make the taproom cozier including some heat!

It's better to have someone else deal with accounting/payroll/HR/distribution/etc while the brewer focuses on the beer.

Well of course - I meant more of an overall direction of the brewery (what beers are made, etc).
Alot of breweries these days seem to focus on beers that appeal to beer geeks, as opposed to just making all around good beer. I have alot of respect for breweries that make say and english pale ale, a cream ale or a brown ale etc. even though those are definitely not trendy styles - they just like making them.

@JoshVelez Is there a place to find out what cans/bottles are available at the brewery? I wasn't able to find but maybe I just flat missed it.

Why not? A happy regular customer can be worth more than the few that go from brewery to brewery following trends.
