I posted a similar thread last year, but after a little bit of research it would seem as though a lot has changed in the Indy beer scene in the last year.

In a few weeks, I'll be making my annual journey to Indianapolis for the 500 (100th running!). I have a few quick questions. Please feel free to reference any other threads where these questions might already have been answered. I did do some research, but I'm only on the GL forum once a year so I'm sure I missed some stuff.

What places have opened up in the last year or so? I would throw St. Joseph in that category as they opened right around this time last year but I didn't get a chance to stop in. How is the new Daredevil facility? Any new must-stops?

With the speedway having the no glass rule, what local options do I have for picking up fresh beer? I know I can get cans at bottle shops, but what about to-go beer from any local breweries? Do Indianapolis breweries do Crowlers at all? I saw something on another thread about plastic Howlers but I've never seen one and wouldn't know where to get one or who fills them.

Central State House Beer is a fantastic option. It's a low abv farmhouse with Brett. Also look for anything from Black Acre in cans.

Daredevil does Crowlers. Don't think anyone else does. If you have empty plastic 32oz growlers I would bring them and go fill them with whatever hoppy beers Deviate is pouring for the public.

Thanks @myersk27. What about stainless steel growlers - I assume those are allowed at the speedway? Where I'm from (Minnesota) I can't think of a single brewery that offers plastic growlers, and I have no idea where I would get one.

Metazoa just opened up in April and has some very good sessionable beers. They're about a mile south of St. Joseph on Coliege Ave.

Chilly Water on Virginia Ave has a good lineup and small bites as well and is across the street from a distillery if you're into that too

Hey @iRun2Beer besides Daredevil the only other local brewery that we know of doing Crowlers is Thr3e Wise Men in Broad Ripple, which recently added Crowlers. Not sure why Crowlers have not caught on more in Indiana as we love them and so do our guests.

Quite a few local breweries do cans so there are a lot of options and maybe some other BAs will chime in on suggestions. We have 5 beers in 16 oz cans at Daredevil and then usually several taproom only options that can be put in a Crowler. Only 2 weeks to the 100th running.

I'll for sure be stopping by to stock up, either Friday or Saturday. Usually get to the speedway before 8 AM so I assume race morning won't be an option, and I would assume you will be fairly busy after the race.

They also have plastic 32oz bullets you can have filled.

The recently opened (technically Grand Opening is this weekend) Deer Creek Brewery in Noblesville does crowlers.

Make sure to check out Deviate. They can fill a plastic growler of their IPA.

Several people have suggested Deviate, and I plan on hitting the taproom while I'm in town, but everyone keeps mentioning plastic growlers. Where on earth can I purchase said vessel? I cant think of anywhere in Minnesota that offers those so I don't have one lying around.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm looking forward to checking up on the Indy beer scene. Some really good beer down there from my experience.

Just about everyone here does plastic howlers/bullets as they call them. I can't speak for Deviate though. I'm not in their club, so I never buy growlers. Their beer is fantastic though and worth the stop.

99% sure Deviate has plastic 32oz howlers. You doing Carb Day @iRun2Beer? If so, we should should try to meet up by Gas Alley. I'll be the guy with a cooler full of Treehouse/Veil/Night Shift cans.

I've done carb day in the past, but honestly not sure if we'll do it this year. I'll message you if we end up going, and then I'll be the guy drooling at your cooler.

Saturday I'm sure I'll get roped into Legends day/fan fest, and probably the Blake Shelton concert too. Race day I'll be the guy cracking the first beer at 7 AM. We sit on the tower terrace in the first few rows behind the pits.

Thanks everyone for the tips and suggestions!

I am going to the race this year, so this thread helps a lot.

    Two questions:

    - Can anyone recommend a good bottle store? (I am staying on Rockville near the 465/74)

    - I'll be sitting in the stands on the outside of the front straight. Can I take my own beer?

You can take beer in. No glass containers. Your cooler has size restrictions, go to the IMS website and read the rules.

First time, all the way from Down Under? Get in early, the build up to the start is a show in itself. The Speedway is a sellout, so the lines at the gates will be long, but the new scannable tickets should help.

I've never had any issue getting in the Speedway, but I arrive early, usually around the time gates open.

Won't be up for CARB day, but would be down to get together for a small share the morning of the race inside the track. I have some pretty decent cans at the moment that I intend to bring up.

I would be up for that. I usually get there at gate open and either start drinking, or take a nap. I'll do my best to find some fresh Todd the Axeman and psuedo Sue cans.

I plan on opening some good stuff Saturday in the coke lot if anyone wants to meet up! Sadly no cans at the moment to take in race day...

I would be in for a Saturday morning meet up. I sit at the exit of three. Maybe somewhere around turn 4 would make sense. Got another buddy who will have a supply of Lawsons and some other good stuff.
