I'm flying through Newark on Tuesday and have a ~10 hour layover. I'd interested in going to one or two breweries in the area.

    Any recommendations?

Most brewery taprooms in the region are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I know Carton and Kane are at least.

Other Half is open on Tuesday night, and it's only 20 miles away, but it could take you up to 2 hours to get there by taxi depending on what time you go.

Best bet is to find a bar with taps that you like in the immediate area.

A few restaurants in Newark airport have a decent tap list. I know one has Kane Head High. Prob your best bet since it's crazy getting in and out of there. Also, uber can't pick up and drop off there and cabs are expensive as hell

You will be about 1/2 hour ride from the Trap Rock Brewery /Restaurant in Berkeley Heights.

You can take the train into Manhattan (from the internet):

"Getting To And From Newark Airport (EWR) from Manhattan
Air Train: The Air Train offers connecting service to NJ Transit and Amtrak trains which will bring you into Manhattan. Surprisingly, this can actually be much quicker than taking a cab or bus, and it is much more affordable. $11.55 one way will bring you from Newark Airport to Penn Station."

In Manhattan you can take the Metro. It took me about 15 min from 42nd st. and the brewery is two blocks from the Metro station.

Other Half is closed Mon-Wed. Thursday open 5-10 and Friday-Sunday 12-10. Definitely worth going there for the beers.

I'd look into fixing that 10 hour layover instead.

For the OP - I think you're better off finding a local bar in the airport. Getting out of Newark and back in again will be a pain.

Take the PATH from the airport to WTC and then the F to Other Half. If that's too much, take the train to Penn and then there's tons of great beer bars in Midtown - but none are particularly cheap. Not much going on in Newark proper.

If you have 10 hours (!) then getting out of Newark and back is definitely doable. Your best bet though would be to take the train into Manhattan like Barracudas mentioned. Once you're in Manhattan you have some really great bars with outstanding taplists a short subway/cab ride away. You can sample a lot of great stuff especially if you're from here, that beats going to a brewery. Others can add to this list but One Mile House and Fool's Gold always have some great stuff on tap. Plus I can't imagine spending 10 hours in Newark airport

Thanks everyone for the suggestions... I appreciate it. It seems the consensus is finding a good taplist somewhere. Time to keep researching that. Any additional recommendations beyond what's already here? If possible, I'd like to avoid going into Manhattan. I've done it a few times and while it can be done smoothly, there are a lot of moving parts that could make getting there and back a bit difficult--especially if I enjoy a few brews. Anything worth seeing in Hoboken?

I'm flying internationally out of Newark but flying standby from Chicago. To ensure that I don't miss the international leg, I'm trying to get on the earliest flight possible out of Chicago. I could probably try to go later as some of the flights look "open", but I really don't want to take any chances since we have hotels and transit booked in Spain already.

Alternatively you can go into the Ironbound section of Newark, where they have a ton of very good Spanish & Portuguese restaurants (I mention this since you are going to Spain). But I must admit I never drank beer there.

Pint bar, Barcade, Zeppelin hall would all be solid options IMO.

Thanks all. Once I finish putting together the Spain itinerary, I'll start researching the places listed. Cheers!

Downtown Woodbridge, there's JJ Bittings. You can take a train from the airport (with a change at Rahway) right to the door.

The Ironbound is known for good Spanish & Portuguese food but not for good beer.

Cork City is the best beer bar in Hoboken. Their tap list is on their website.

Thanks! A few nice items on the list. Any recommendations? I drink mostly stouts and other high ABV beers!
