Could you limit yourself to a $50/month beer budget?

    Brief backstory:

    • My wife and I live in a 2 bedroom apartment tat we pay too much for with our 2.5 y/o daughter
    • We are expecting another child in October and will outgrow the apartment
    • We are sick of renting and want to buy, but don't have the amount of money we want saved yet so we are moving in with her parents
In the interest of saving as aggressively as possible (especially considering that my wife will be out of work again when my son is born), we're cutting back basically wherever we can. For me that means, among other things, culling the beer budget. I probably spend ~$250/month on beer right now if I'm being honest, and while I can afford it it doesn't exactly facilitate an aggressive savings plan. First world problem for sure, but beer is a big part of my life and one of my hobbies so it's not going to be the most fun thing to do, at least at first...

    Or maybe not?

I started thinking about it a bit more, and I started counting out the excellent beers I can get locally with minimal/zero effort for ~$10 or less for a six:

    Sierra Nevada
    Lagunitas
    Stone (most regular releases)
    Sixpoint
    Troegs
    Founders
    Jack's Abby
    Uinta
    Sam Adams
    Cambridge Brewing

    and others.

Though it may mean not buying 2 day old Trillium every week and probably nixing the BBA stout releases later this year, I think I can probably survive

So, here is my challenge: For the time I plan to live with my in-laws, I will only buy beers I can find for ~$10 and under in 6-pack form (I rarely buy bombers anyway so I don't even consider those) and I will limit myself to a $50/month budget. This means probably 18-24 months of sort of going "back to basics" and trying my best to avoid getting pulled into the hype. Aside from the savings, I am interested to see what this will do to my perspective and my palate when I come out on the other side. Actually I think it may really renew my appreciation for many beers in many ways.

So, has anyone else had to do something similar? Tell your tales. Any suggestions for other beers? Anyone want to crack something expensive and drink to my "misery?" :grinning:

    Cheers!

Technically, yes I could. It would just imply to drink far less, but please still quality. So 50€ spent in supermarket and anywhere the cheapest I can find is feasible. I've yet to need to do such a drastic change in my spending. I'd also miss the occasional online haul. That said and unlike you I'm a celibate.

If that $50 dollars is before sales tax and deposit are accounted for then yes. Absolutely.

Well, a factor in the $50/mo budget is how much you drink. I pretty much drink a beer most nights during the week and maybe two on friday and saturday (on a rare occasion I might have three). So that's 9 beers a week or 36/month more or less.

    At $10/sixer that's $1.66 each * 36 = $60. So I'm just over.

The real question is could I limit myself to the less expensive craft beer? Sure. There are a lot of great beers in that price range and, if money were tight, I could limit myself to that range....and cut back too to keep it under $50. So I've talked myself into thinking I need to change my vote.

One other consideration: I have a kegerator. Generally you can drink more cheaply going that route.

$50 a month would be tough, but I could definitely drink mostly $10 sixers for 5-6 months. Sierra Nevada, deschutes, boulevard, and six point all have good options under $10 and sometimes you run into sales and can get stuff under $10 a 12 pack.

You're going to be living with your in-laws and are worried about your beer budget? If that isn't incentive enough to cut back and save I don't know what is!!!!

I've been trying to do $20 a week and it's tough.
I love me some bombers and they cost a lot.
6 packs are the ticket to saving your money though!
A lot of the good IPAs are $11-12 each 6er now.

I'm on the no side, I probably spend 250-300 a month right now and I could cut that in half and drink less but the truth is, Beer is more expensive here. In the us I would probably limit myself to 100$ a month. I think I would have enough to enjoy that way and if I dont drink 100$ then I spend less the next week. But at least I'm in a buffer zone!

That's about my budget for a month of beer. Little higher in the summer months and lower in the winter months.

$100 is very doable here, I'm actually a little under that. I would recommend the op shoot between 50-100, it's enough money to keep trying new things, drink a nice bomber once or twice a month and keep some daily drinkers on hand.

There are worse things then being forced to drink only Jacks Abbey, Founders, Troegs and Stone for a while.

I'm surprised it hasn't been said yet, but look into home brewing. In addition to cheaper beer you may find new knowledge and appreciation for the hobby.

Also, add Long Trail to your list of more affordable craft brewers.

I think your challenge will be very easy given the 3rd bullet point. Here is what I foresee: You will move in with your (out)in-laws & that will initially cause you to drink more-a whole lot more-not less. Your mother-in-law,THE QUEEN, will repeatedly call you a drunken bum in front of your wife & children and indicate that your wife was foolish for not marrying that nice boy down the street-he's a dentist don't ya know-& by the way he is still single at 37. You will get divorced & the resulting alimony & child support payments will force you to live in a van down by the river drinking only NATTY Lite that you steal from the corner store where you are the night manager. See; you will have met your financial goal & made all of us on this site proud as shit.

I said no. Even though I have (sort of) weeded out bombers, and almost exclusively buy 6 or 12 packs now, $50 a week seems to be my budget, no thanks to my wallet sucking neighbors! Cheers!

In SC I can buy 12ers of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Torpedo at Sams Club for about $12 and change.

Best of luck to you buddy. It could be done by a) not drinking a ton of beer and b) sticking to those breweries you know to be a really good value. Not sure it's your thing but there are plenty of great value bourbons you could swap into the rotation; I feel like in that realm the quality disparity between cheap and premium is far narrower.

Personally, given my drinking habits and price of beer where I live 50/month would be pretty tough.

3 cases of Sierra Nevada is under $50 and I do it all the time. Actually, I do it intentionally.

I could certainly do it, but it would mean 1) drinking less overall - Most of the beers I'd buy in a sixer are $10 to $12 each - and more importantly 2) it would likely mean skipping out on most if not all the special releases here in Chicago from Mikerphone, pipeworks, etc that I love to pick up. But hey, I think its a great reason to do it and I hope it goes well for you!

3 cases of SN at the closest place I can get it (Ontario LCBO) is right around 50$. The only reason I wouldn't do that is I like to have a good mix of different beers. But I wont lie I probably drink 18-20 beers a week let alone a month being off work and all. lol.
