    When I hear about a beer that the producer describes as "refreshing", then I pretty much know that it is commercially macro-produced and it will suck.
    But there are other words, that are really in vogue now, and I often use them to cheat on my expectations:

    Session = Lower alcohol
    Imperial = Higher alcohol
    Artisanal = Expensive

    Anyone else have a good example of a word on a beer bottle that instantly makes you think of what it may be like?

    For me it's the absence of words that's telling. Sure, the label is cute but what hops did you use?

    I think "session" and "imperial" are pretty good useful terms.

    I think "Crushable" is really overused though.

    It's a shame breweries still do that.

    using "Tropical" on labels.

    I dont think anything I've ever had labeled as "Tropical" has been even close...

    the truly tropical beers dont need to advertise it.

    Session does have a useful definition beyond low alcohol, though. Even as important as that, it's supposed to be made to continue to surprise and impress after you have multiple glasses. That last part is usually where the session IPAs abuse the term :wink:.

    I hate "malt backbone". Is the beer malty, is it hoppy, is it pretty balanced, does it have a lot of mouth feel? Saying a beer has a nice malt backbone is vague and stupid.

    Weasel words are those that describe a product in glowing terms without actually saying much about the product. For instance, telling me the brewer is passionate about his work isn't very helpful. There are a lot of unemployed actors and musicians that are passionate about their work but passion alone won't get you an Oscar nomination or first chair in an orchestra.

    Those were the first two that came to mind for me.
    Both of these marketing terms began as indicators of implied higher quality. They now both seem to serve as a consumer warning or a subliminal prompt to lower one's expectations.

    well yes and no, some IPA's have very little malt coming thru and are pretty much just getting a big hop flavor for lack of a better word. So when I see this I think "balanced", but then balanced is pretty much subjective across everyone's palate. That said most descriptors are subjective
