No, same yeast as we usually use. Some really different and interesting flavors seem to come out with a huge dose of azacca.

Had a can the other night and loved it - No butter smell at all, there was a oat'ey kind of smell to it which i think you mentioned earlier in the thread. Was able to grab a 4 pack and looking forward to the rest of them.

Didn't get any butter out of Forcefield, thought it was friggin' delicious, actually- but I did see a friend on Untappd up here in Rochester note the butter thing. Said it reminded him of Alien Church in that way, actually.

who knows, there may be some can variation. definitely let us know, especially if any of you get two cans that strike you as radically different from one another.

...I just drank another can, and it was damn good

I've noticed I find that deceiving taste, being described as possibly diacetyl, more as the beer warms. I've had 3 cans so far and only noticed (though also only sought it) in the third.

Had my first (and only) can today. Did not incur the buttery, diacetyl taste that some have experienced. This had an exceptional mouthfeel, slight bitterness that lasted in the throat, nose of mango/pineapple from the can, less so once poured into a teku. All in all another great beer from @Grimm_Artisanal_Ales

@Grimm_Artisanal_Ales can you comment a little bit on pricing?

Just last night I was excited to learn my local shop had Forcefield...only to find out they're charging $7.75 per can.

We all love your beers, and realize this is kind of a hell of our own creation since we fuel all the hype, but $8 retail for a single IPA pint is starting to get crazy. I know it's mostly beyond your control: you charge the distro a price, they charge their retailers a price, etc. etc. What's unfortunate is that I think the Grimm brand/reputation begins to suffer as a result.

Because for the first time ever last night I was face-to-face with a full case of Grimm IPAs and didn't buy any...instead opting for a double IPA from Evil Twin that was right next to it that was only going for $4.50 a can. FOMO can only get me so far it seems.

That's just my .02, would love your thoughts.

This has been beaten to death in previous threads, and Grimm has given their input before - take a look through some of those threads.

Also, $8 cans have existed for pretty much every release, aside from maybe the first one, at certain shops. There's really not much Grimm can do short of cutting off offending shops. I don't think Grimm's reputation has really suffered either, considering they seem more popular than ever.

Finally, paying $4.50 for an Evil Twin can is also a big ripoff. Sounds like you were just at a price-gouging bottle shop and should probably address your anger their direction. Get Grimm and Whole Foods or any variety of other reasonably-priced bottle shops around the city if you're really so price conscious.

I guess this is what I was referring to. Sorry for being price-conscious. If the brewer himself/herself is saying they stay on the alert for price gouging, it didn't seem like an absurd thing to bring up. I know Shaun Hill (of Hill Farmstead) is notorious for fiercely monitoring the prices of his beers through distribution, to keep them fairly priced for consumers...but I'd say he's the exception, not the rule.

Yes, here's the deal. We charge $2.10/can to the distributor, and they have a 32% markup to the retailer, so the retailer buys them for $2.76/can. They are priced to sell at below $5/can. If a retailer has them at $7.75, then they're making $5 profit on something they bought for $2.76. It's a free country and they can charge whatever they want to the customer, but if a place is crazy out of line expensive we might not opt to sell them cans in the future. When we have our own space cans will generally be under five bucks.

Which means you get it too and essentially know the answer to your question: simple supply and demand and out of Grimm's control.

Good to know. But it is obvious that because some of these small shops are getting such limited quantities and it's a bit of a hassle to take phone calls on availability and have customers stopping by, only buying the 1 or 2 can limit and nothing else, they are just marking the hell out of it up to make it worth their while. I'd like to see WF or some of the bigger shops who are pricing it fairly get it all until quantities allow for you to get more to the smaller stores. Shops selling it at a 300% markup need to be eliminated IMO.

    Er....last I checked it's $3.08 a can for the retailer, not $2.76.
