Gooood Morning NBS. There is no better way to start a day of New Beer consumpification than to ponder this observation written by Amanda B. Reckonedwith, in her book, Any Porter In A Storm --

"Laggardly lager lovers lead largely less luminous lives, as ale aficionados ably achieve an admirably assertive acumen."

    Don't you agree?

Welcome to New Beer Sunday, extra early the days are long and the nights are longer and this is not week 600 it is week 590 edition. Those of you expecting this to be #600, sorry, but I am going to get the numerical sequence back in order  Wooo hoo, bear with me through a couple thoughts.

Today I will do some foul, dangerous, heavy work, like every day on my job, before I return to join y'all. I am the last chance for a lot of recyclables that make it into the waste stream. Half a million pounds rescued over the years is but a drop, maybe two drops, in an ocean sized problem. More sobering to realize it is impossible to do more than barely counterbalance what my family have used. To all those who try to counterbalance, thank you! Man, does make ya thirsty, though, know it? I know how I spell relief. B-E-E-R

We love... make that LOVE beer here, of course that's true. But do we love beer enough? Beer takes nothing and adds back, destroys nothing and creates greatness. It is our homage to collaboration and sustainable living on earth. Do we realize how it is part of how our race survived and culture thrived? Do we see it as restorative of mind and body? Do we understand its place in history? And even more to the point, do we see our place in history, living in perhaps the most vibrant and amazingly delicious and wonderful point in the long, enjoyable existence of beer?

Folks, this is the golden age of fine fermentation, right here in 2016, right here on BA this Sunday in America and the world. Today I am excited to report we are part of a delicious revolution that takes history and culture and multiplies it with science and ingenuity, and I raise this glass of New Beer today, NBS #590, to our newest generation of Fine Beer Brewers. Cheers!

How about you, have a new beer to try? Well, now is the time and this is the place. Why not pull up a chair to the virtual table and crack a new brew open with us, and tell us about it.

How do you like it? Would you recommend it? What does it taste like? Remind you of any other beers? How's it smell, how's the mouthfeel, is it refreshing? What are the features you like? Or don't like?

Have fun with diggin' what your beer's all about, and checkin' out the beers and thoughts of the rest of us. And have fun with leaving pics too, we all really love that beer porn. Thanks for keeping NBS fresh, fun, and informative for 11+ years.

    Mornin' NBSers.

Good start to the day @cavedave and today's new beer fits part of your quotation and a lot of the spirit of this thread, although I'd perhaps shorten the quote and rephrase it a wee bit to, "Lager lovers largely lead luminous lives ( ) "

If all goes as planned I'll be back this evening with a new Vienna Lager from a new brewery. Both are so new that I may be doing the first review of a beer that is in a style of lager I've largely learned to love.

Meanwhile, at a more personal level, during your foul, dangerous work day, remember to attend to your own personal safety.

    Cheers, all!

Good morning New BSers! @cavedave, thank you for throwing down the gauntlet (Hope you wear a pair or two at work today, you need those fingers to grip a brew or two) with an alliterative literature quote. And those of us who recycle appreciate the vital work you do - be safe!

Well, it's another sunny day here in NW PA. Last week we had three spruce trees removed from the yard in anticipation of the next project, the construction of an 12 x 18 foot shed to store my fossil fueled household equipment that occupies too much space in my garage. This building bonanza should begin in July, after my anticipated return from another beer run to Texas. Hopefully I'll be able to rehome my girls, three lovely red-eared sliders who have grown too large to winter house inside. I'm looking for one to three locations where they can be relatively safe from human predators since they think all humans exist only to feed them. I'm willing to deliver them (also gives me a chance to check out their future accommodations!), particularly if a brew pub is in the vicinity.

    Today's new brew:

25.4 oz bottle BB 09/10/16 at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter
Aroma – slightly sweet and fruity
Head large (Maximum seven cm, aggressive pour), light brown, fizzy with rocks, diminishing to a one cm creamy ring and layer
    Lacing - none
Body – dark amber, cloudy, clears up some as it warms
Flavor – begins slightly sweet with a plum flavor, some weak yeast phenolics also come through; no hops, no malt, no alcohol, no diacetyl
    Palate medium, creamy, soft carbonation

A very enjoyable dubbel with the alcohol well hidden. The plums contribute a pleasant flavor which reduces the yeasty phenolics, smoothing the flavor into something which, considering the well-hidden alcohol, makes this deceptively quaffable. The only other plum-based brew I’ve ever had was also quite flavorful, as I recall. If I could only remember the name…

    Appearance 3.5, Aroma 4, Flavor 4.25, Palate 4, Overall 4. Rating 4.07, average 3.69, rDev +10.3%

Guess I need to start eating plums. When I was a young-tard, one of my neighbors had a small grove of plum trees along their property line. We kids never eat them, just threw them at each other. Another misspent youth.

    Prosit, ya all!

    look: 3.75 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

750ml. bottle, chilled and poured into two flutes.

Look: Appearance I would describe as a rusty color, pretty much opaque with haze, a thin large bubbled foamy head, the bubbles pop readily and settle into a thin ring around the glass with a few floating bubble islands.

Smell: First thing noticeable in the aroma is the earthiness. Grape must, bit of spiciness, light funk, followed by yeast and a hint of cider.

Taste: Slight sweetness that quickly gives way to a deep earthy round of flavors. Bit of oak, hint of leather and white wine. A noticeable spiciness brings everything together and the background bit of tartness and funk keeps things both balanced and complex.

Feel: Moderate level of carbonation, feels pretty full on the tongue, but dry, and not syrupy.

Overall: A very nice brew. I see why it has one some big awards in the past. Complex and layered flavors. Nothing pushes another aspect out of the way.

Arcadia Ales, HopMouth, Double IPA, 8% ABV

Been wanting to try this beer as its a local, year round available and have had some solid beers from Arcadia. Nice brewpub that I visited on vacation last summer but never had HopMouth. Saw a single and picked it up, unfortunately not bottle dated. The pour is nice dark Amber with a one finger head, very solid appearance. Aroma is earthy, floral, pretty subtle. Taste is piney, resin with a nice Carmel sweetness backup finishing quite bitter. Medium carb, overall a solid DIPA that I'll probably have again. Cheers BAs!

I am just back from my daily walk to the store and I feel so good I think I should have a beer. Good morning NBS! Today I decided to make some crab dip and go with the IPA for my beer choice. I bought two beers from a new brewer this week. Woodcock Brothers Brewing. I found this brewer on my way home from my recent beer excursion and I grabbed a sixer of their helles lager Niagra and this one XPA an India Pale Ale.

    Happy New Regional IPA Sunday

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Color is hazy and yellow with a stream of bubbles. In my tasting glass the head was thinner and white and fell fast. Nose is scrumptious with peach fuzz and a little bit of dank spice. Some prickly herbal accents the background and then the fruit starts to smell tropical. Pineapple. Malt is a but a hint on the nose . The taste is outstanding a fuller mouthfeel than you are used to with this type of hop but this is the stuff juicy is made of. The succulence of the peach fruit takes the middle with a a lightness that's all about the flavors. There is not much bitterness at first and then you notice there was just enough to whet it as it goes down with a little bit of residual sweetness in the finish but lots of good flavor. Good round malt that is soft and lends just enough weight to the mouthfeel to show you lots of ripe peach and those prickly herbs. The spice that was so dank on the nose gives texture to the flavor as it makes the palate tingle and a little citrusy hint of lemon finishes this one with a bitterness that lingers. It's not forward and it's not so strong that you would say it's strong. It just stays a little. I like this very much. No diacetyl, no dms, no caramel, no alcohol on the nose or on the palate. Crisp and refreshing.

    Howdy, NBSers!

Summer is in full swing down here in the Brazos Valley, where the temperatures are hitting the 90s and the heat indicies have reached “stay the hell inside”. My bougainvilleas are loving it, which is nice. But all I can think about is canoeing or tubing or doing something in the Comal or Guadalupe, jumping into that cold water and chilling … literally.

I picked up this one at Whichcraft in Austin a week ago. One of the shopworkers saw me eyeing the sours and recommended it, so I figured why not:
Ranger Creek Dry Hopped Berliner Weisse

It lives up to the label, offering a lot of sour flavor as well as an influx of citrusy, tropical fruit flavor -- not quite what I think of as a Belgian IPA (like Prairie Artisan’s Prairie Hop) but roaming around in that ballpark. Much of the look, smell and taste makes me think of a mango-grapefruit juice thing with 90% of the sugar sucked out of it. The sweetness is minimal, but it’s enough to tame a lot of the sourness of this beer … the lemon flavor here is more like lemonade than raw lemon.

    The review:
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/23672/226581/?ba=Premo88#review
    4.14 (+1.7%)

Next time I’m at Whichcraft I’ll definitely thank that guy for the recommendation.

    Cheers!

    A Special Ale!!

A friend gave me a bottle of Lagunitas The Waldos' Special Ale. Who doesn’t like a “special ale”!?! Well this is a new beer for me so I am going to find out.

There is an interesting ‘story’ on the Lagunitas website for this beer:

“In 1971, the Waldos met one afteroon at 4:20 in the front courtyard of their school near the statue of Louis Pasteur. They set out in a '66 Impala armed with a "treasure map" on a journey to find a secret garden near Point Reyes. They met there at the same time every day and continued their quest. They never found the secret garden....But they keep lookin'. The dankest and hoppiest beer ever brewed at Lagunitas was made with help of the Waldos for all treasure hunters.”

Sort of like the movie The Goonies!?!

Lagunitas also provides the statistics for the “special ale”:

    ABV 11.5

    O.G. 1.105

    IBU 100+

Whoa! That is one BIG “special ale”!!

Well I am feeling “special” today so let’s drink!!

Served in my Gulden Draak tulip glass:

    Appearance:

Pours a hazy golden color with a two finger white head which dissipates quickly.

    Aroma:

A juicy aroma of citrus and tropical fruits. A tiny bit of dank/resin in the background.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with citrus and tropical fruit flavors dominating. The malt profile comes off with a fair bit of sweetness.

    Mouthfeel:

    Full bodied and sticky!!

    Overall:

This is most definitely a BIG and sticky DIPA. I enjoyed drinking this beer.

    Cheers!

This 12-pack was brewed in Golden, Colorado.

Old Vienna is listed as a pale lager with the ingredients being only water, barley malt, hops, and yeast. It has a thin, white head, a clear, bubbly, golden straw appearance, with some bits of lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet malt, white bread, and clean water. Taste is the same, with a mild, rounding hop bite at the end. Mouthfeel is high-light, and Old Vienna finishes crisp, refreshing, and it seems to be a bit higher quality than others of its ilk.

Way back in the olden times (mid-to-late70's) we used to buy 8 packs of this, in clear, long-neck, 7oz bottles. [IMG] So today was supposed to be a 2013 Holiday Barleywine from Berkshire that when I popped it turned into gusher, so I had to change to something that I am still trying warm up to. It pours a very attractive ruby red with a 4 inch white head with a reddish hue that leaves behind plenty of lace. When I poured the last half in the glass all kinds of chunky white floaties settled to the bottom. 4.5

Smell is must, raspberries, oak, and very sour apples and other funk. 3.5

Taste is exactly what you would expect musty funk, sour apples, raspberry, and cherries with some oak. 3.5

Mouthfeel is less than medium with, loads of prickly carbonation, a touch dry, and for its size 11% ABV it drinks pretty easy, if you can handle all of the sour and musty flavors. 4

Overall I want to thank @jzeilinger for this enormous wild sour ale, still not a huge fan, but it is expanding my palate beyond IPA'S and Stouts. 3.5[IMG]

    New Stout Sunday

Pizza Boy's BBA Sunny Side Up

Happy Sunday, BAs. It's a hot and sunny day here in southeastern Pennsylvania. Too hot for a BBA coffee stout? Nah, although I may be back with a gose later today. Assuming this crowler doesn't kick my ass first.

This one pours straight black with two fat fingers of dense mocha-colored head. The head lasts a while before leaving behind heavy sheets of lacing. It's a beautiful-looking beer.

There's a strong aroma of sweet bourbon, with vanilla, almond and slight anise notes. Dark chocolate and a little dark-roasted coffee lurk in the background.

The coffee plays a stronger role in the taste, where it tastes more like a smooth, medium-bodied breakfast blend, with its own vanilla notes. Then the bourbon comes in strong, with the same notes as the aroma, and leaves an alcohol burn on the backend. There's not much chocolate presence or any other malt notes detectable with this much bourbon, which is a shame for a stout, if you ask me.

It's medium bodied and slightly creamy, but the bourbon obscures a lot of pondering over the mouthfeel.

Honestly, I like the regular Sunny Side much better. That's one of the best coffee stouts available, IMO. This introduces way more almond profile than I like, and covers up the depth of the coffee. It's not bad, but not entirely my thing.

    Enjoy your day, everyone.

Thanks to @cavedave for today's eloquent start.
We've had a busy few weeks here, so today is just going to be one of those slow, do-nothing days.
Our youngest left today for a six week course at College of the Atlantic. He needs to take an extra course for his third year of school, and his decision was to do it in the summer rather than potentially overburden himself in the fall. We supported that decision, even though he's not going to make much money this summer. Fortunately, he doesn't spend a lot. We are looking forward to visiting him in Bar Harbor.
Today's beer is Araunja from Deciduous Brewing in Newmarket, NH. It is a lambic aged on Sicilian oranges.
It pours a somewhat hazy orange/gold color. What little head there is quickly dissipates.
There is a sour orange aroma up front, followed by some earthy hops.
A strong sour orange taste with a little funk.
    Tart and crisp.
I absolutely loved this beer. That being said, if you don't like sours, you won't like this.

    Well I'll be a . . .

    Monkey's Uncle Imperial IPA

Appearance: Burnished gold leading toward red, bright cap with very good lacing.

Aroma: Surprisingly bright, the hops jump out in an earthy, spicy way and malt quickly follows. Very good first impression. Some floral, hint of conifer, solid without being heavy.

Taste: Good malt here with hop support. This is bigger, bolder and stronger, a true Imperial brew. The website says 8%, no mention I can find of IBUs, hops are there but not intrusive, certainly not the focal point, malt is main and hops play a supporting role. Mid palate hops arrive and sing the way to the finish. Lots of hops but bitterness is noticeable only in the aftertaste where it lingers just slightly.

    Texture: Pretty full.

Overall: Now, I can take hops as well as the next guy, I mean when you open the can this one hits you with a hop aroma discernable three feet away, yet that's just part of the picture. As you glass then lift to sip you're thinking hops but no, what presents is rich malt with hops following. Bit of a surprise but a nice one. Full on malt, good hop counterpoint, this one's a winner.

Happy NBS. Time for me to enjoy a new sour(ish) beer.

Mutha Pucka from Next Door brewing has a hazy straw color with a nice 2 finger white head. Decent retention and some spotty lacing in my glass. Aroma is similar to a Berliner with pineapple juice. Flavor is nice and tart, but not too sour. A bit of vinegar and white grape along with the pineapple notes. Very light and spritzy feel that is good for a hot day. I found this to be enjoyable and it seems to be an improvement over the first batch.
