I'll just be happy to be able to get bourbon county brand stout without trading or traveling out of state! Fedex Bill is about to go down drastically!

Odd question but does anyone know if RR Whole Foods or any of the westside Heinens locations will fill growlers using tubing as opposed to just the spigot? Ordered a few more half growler flip tops (this time from Sierra Nevada) and of course they have the same shitty opening the Tree House ones have. Should have just went with the non branded one on Amazon. :flushed:

Some places fill growlers using just the spigot? I wouldn't buy a growler from a place that does that.

All the Heinens I've ever been to fill with a tube.

Certain bartenders at certain breweries do it without the tube.

I don't know why you buy those; nobody wants to fill them. Even if they do it's a shitty pour and you get less beer for the same price.

Yikes. They are just wasting beer by doing that. AND probably low filling your growler.

Well before I bought the SN 32 oz flip top I actually called their gift shop and asked them how large the mouth was and the size I was told over the phone doesn't even come close to measuring up to what it actually is. Had I been able to see them in person first I wouldn't have ordered them. Fuckers.

Avon Heinens put the lip of the growler right up to the spigot, needless to say when he tilted it to a certain angle it just spewed into the air like a fountain and made a mess. I could have sworn Bay Village and Rocky River used hoses in the past but after seeing Avon not use one I began to question everything I believed in. Thanks for clearing it up. If you haven't been able to tell this has been quite the dramatic endeavor to get these damn things filled. I feel like since I already dropped money on them I have to salvage some use out of em.

When not using a tube for growler fills, I watched one bartender at pub frato in concord pour the beer into a pitcher first then into the growler, worked good actually. He spent the time to spoon out the foam in the growler and pour again to ensure it was filled. Took some time, but worth it. Couple more shout outs to pub frato, they do discount growler fills saturdays, and not sure why, but the white rajah brew kettle fills and draft pours always taste outstanding.

That sounds like a horrible way to pour a growler. You're introducing all sorts of oxygen. The idea with the tube is it fills from the bottom-up so only the top of the beer is exposed to the oxygen and that pours off at the end.

It's done wonders for the Rajah as I said, it's the only fill I get there, and the fill is gone within that day or the next.

They used to use hoses, I asked why no more, I guess they were having trouble with it blowing off.

That was just one guy and one fill, usually they just put the growler up to the tap and waste a bunch of beer trying to fill it minus the foam. The pitcher just helped reduce waste when I watched. He was also respectful and tried to remove the foam and keep filling.

I know you said it was just one time, but to explain further: taking in oxygen is one issue. But by doing that, you'd also lose co2 that's absorbed into solution. It may give you a full growler, but the carbonation level of the beer itself will be less than the brewery intended. This would affect the aroma and mouthfeel of the beer.

Some employees are just not properly trained. Drives my buddy nuts when he sees bartenders pour beers with the spigot in the glass and eventually in the beer. He is a bartender and says it's not the right way to do it and makes the spigot dirty and contaminates the beer...idk I usually let him rant and stop listening.

He's correct. The draft faucet should never contact the beer, the foam, or even the clean inside of a glass. Sticking it into a growler is disgusting and won't fill easily or properly.

The growlers with small mouths just suck all around. The standard size tube barely fits inside those, so it will still geyser beer everywhere as it fills with a tube. I can only assume breweries that sell those use a smaller diameter tubing (which can also cause issues if the beer is poured at the proper pressure).

I know some of you are sticklers on everything from proper tipping to not annoying your bartender. Well, using a shitty growler style because it looks cool isn't winning any brownie points behind the bar. It's wasteful, messy, and time consuming.

Now filling a flip top off a bright tank, that's a different story. ;-)
