Hey BA, need some advice. For some reason my beer fridge has started freezing. That means I have some bottles in there that are now frozen. I REALLY don't want to dump them but are they going to be any good after they thaw? It's a mix of some IPAs, stouts, porters and some others. First time dealing with this so any and all advice is appreciated.

Yea man they'll be fine just put them in another fridge and let them thaw. Don't thaw them at room temp.

I agree with the previous posts, but this might be an opportunity for you to experiment with trying to make an ice beer. If you can see some liquid in any of those bottles, see if you can drain it off of the ice and get yourself a potent beer. If you do it, let us know how it goes.

I had the same thing happen in my beer fridge, it flipped out and froze everything. Only problem I noticed was the bottle of coffee brown ale that blew up because the ice popped the cap. The other beers were fine once I tweaked the temp setting and it dropped back to a normal temp.
I think the only thing that didn't freeze was a single bottle of Backwoods Bastard.

Yeah that can happen, it should be fine to thaw. I would definitely turn the temperature up from now on though.

OP, let us know how it turns out. If it works out for you favorably, frozen beer slushies might be the next big thing in craft beer, who knows. If I recall correctly, delicious Reese's Peanut Butter Cups came about when someone with a chocolate bar accidentally bumped into someone with a jar of peanut butter. Cheers to serendipity!

As they thaw, tip them upside down, then after a while upright again. Repeat that on and off. That has seemed to work for me in the past.

Set the fridge temp a little higher and they will thaw on their own.

Time to turn up the thermostat so your beer is 45-50 degrees. Unlike the beginner beers, craft needs to be stored and consumed at a higher temp.

Why should the carbonation be affected? Where does the CO2 go?
As far as concentrating the beer by pouring it off the slush, I should imagine it would taste pretty awful. It's all a matter of balance.

    Cheers!

Something's up with the fridge. it's set at 45 since that's "cellar" temp. most i like a little warmer anyway so it works for me. that's until it decided to freeze everything. still thawing out in the regular fridge so hopefully by this weekend i'll be doing some taste tests....you know.....for scientific research!

My beer fridge's thermostat failed in the 'On' position so that the fridge would keep running all the time and freeze everything. Lucky for me it is in the 'On' position (if it fails in the 'Off' position, it's time for a new fridge) so I bought an external thermostat which has a thermal sensor that runs into the fridge through the door gasket from the controller that hangs on the side of the fridge. A power cord runs from the controller to the wall outlet and is plugged in, and the plug for the fridge plugs into the back of the controller's plug so that the external thermometer unit essentially becomes a power interrupter to turn your fridge on/off based on the temp setting that you choose for the external controller.

If you ever get into homebrewing this is a great device to have to brew lagers, and also works well to help you brew ales if you happen to live in a warm climate and can't ferment your ales at 65 degrees in your house or apartment.

Anyone ever have a full unopened growler freeze (left in the car overnight) then thaw it out? If so, how did it turn out? Left an IPA in the car. It was about 80% frozen. Letting it thaw out in the fridge now.

The thermostat in my truck fridge went out and froze some bottles of Pliny and Sucks. They were drinkable, but not what it should have been.

Wow, you're lucky that didn't crack the growler, presuming it is glass. Probably would have if it had completely frozen.

Frozen beer thawed out turns gross. The alcohol and flavor elements separate from the water and you're left with a stale, flat, bland, drain-pour. Sorry.

But if there is anything in the bottle that hasn't frozen yet, it'll still be tasty, maybe even better because of fractional freezing.
