Pretty excited to try this. I love OB but I wonder how this will turn out. Anyone see it yet?

    ---

Longmont, CO —Oskar Blues Brewery is twisting up a PINNER for beer drinkers to lust after this summer with its Passion Fruit PINNER Throwback IPA strain, the sultry spinoff to the brand’s existing PINNER Throwback IPA. The limited release brew will launch at the end of June and will blaze in all 50 states where Oskar Blues CANs are sold.

Passion Fruit PINNER IPA (4.9% ABV, 40 IBUs) accentuates the passion fruit and citrus juice attributes of the original PINNER and cranks them up to 11. The clean malts with hints of toasted biscuit pair with zesty hops to spice up the taste and aromas from immense additions of pureed passion fruit and a small spike of pureed Blood Orange.

“Passion fruit is very prominent in PINNER Throwback IPA’s dry-hopped flavor spectrum, locking in on that and accentuating it alongside the existing mouthfeel and clean malt characteristics is a natural extension of what this beer is all about,” said head brewer Tim Matthews. “Melding fruit aromas and flavors with a lower ABV beer creates a killer light and refreshing Passion Fruit Pinner IPA for getting after it this summer.”

The only passion fruit beer I've had was Lilikoi kepolo from Avery and I thought it was outstanding, will definitely try this.

Yesterday I had a Passionfruit Grunion on cask and it was phenomenal. If this is anything like that it will be fantastic.

I don't know if the Passion fruit will work in an IPA might be to sweet. Still looking forward to trying it. Cheers

Funky Buddha makes passion fruit crusher (their session IPA) that is very good. Wish they canned it for the beach!

Really not on board for the "throw ___ fruit in a popular beer and see if people will buy it" mentality going on right now....

Looking at you Ballast Point, OB, New Belgium, and many others

I'm not a fan of most, but I think it's a good way to help market craft beer to females and in the case of Ballast Point, the Hispanic population. Because of these fruity 'gateway beers' my girlfriend is more willing to try the different styles.

It is obviously selling well to the average consumer or they wouldn't be making it. Especially OB.

All good and fine, I have no problem with a gateway beer... Just don't think they're very good myself, with the exception of maybe a couple grapefruit IPA's like Sculpin.

(Watermelon dorado will haunt me to the end of my days)

I really don't think they are doing this get the female or Hispanic pop. They are being done because the "Juicy" IPA craze. They are able achieve close to the same flavors without the work of getting these flavors from the hop but rather from Fruit Additives. Not like Fruit Additives are new or anything as some have been doing this for the past 10 years+.

Clearly something has made these more popular. I don't think this is just because the community is growing.
Im just sick of all these company's throwing a line into the same watering hole. Its not like they are even trying a different fruit than there competitors.

That's definitely a great beer, too

I just kind of doubt that anybody who buys a Watermelon Dorado is going to expect it to taste like a fresh TreeHouse IPA. Even if it's not their intention, an increase in demographic is definitely a result of adding fruit to their beers. Someone who has tried Grapefruit Shandy, Summer Shandy, etc. would be much more likely to pick up something called Heavy Melon Watermelon Lime Ale or Grapefruit Sculpin; if they like them, they have brand recognition and will pick up another one of their brews.

I just picked up a 4-pack of Stillwater's Nu-Tropic IPA, which has Passion Fruit and Mango. Very juicy, like a beer-mosa. Much more fruit-forward than Grapefruit Sculpin, for example. A bit too much fruit for me - my guess is that this will be similar, but who knows. If you're excited for this and have Stillwater distro, give it a shot.

I wasn't a huge Pinner fan, but I'll definitely be trying this if I can find it.
