I've been drinking craft beers since the 80's. Quite awhile ago (7-10 years or so) I had a friend recommend a beer to me that he thought was the best thing ever. I tried it and it was horrible. It tasted like body odor smells and was a total drain pour. The strange thing is that this beer is pretty highly regarded.

I didn't give it much thought until I bought a double IPA in Kansas. It had the same taste and I drain poured it. I got lambasted by some of my friends when I checked it in to Untappd and commented about the flavor.

Then I had a somewhat different beer from the same brewer as the first and it had that same off flavor.

Finally, I had yet another beer, from another brewer, that had the same taste.

As you can guess from the title, the original was Rogue (Dead Guy). The other Rogue was XS Double Dead Guy, so I call it "The Rogue Effect". The other two were:

Decadent Imperial IPA from Ska and Dirty Bird IPA from Pelican

They all have the same off flavor. I'm trying to figure out if it's a hop, something in the base malt, the yeast...what? I know it's something relatively unique to my tastebuds, but I'm really curious what the source is.

Also, anybody else have a similar experience?

Yes I have and it's due to something that specific brewery does because I find it across the board in their brands. In my case it's probably a proprietary yeast.

I'd want a few more questions answered before I piled onto something this ambiguous. Were those the only two times you tried those beers? Did you (back then) know to look for bottling/best buy dates to make sure the beer wasn't old, oxidized, unstable or infected? I don't drink Dead Guy very regularly, but whenever I have had them I've thought Dead Guy was a solid American representation of the Bock style.

The first ever "Rogue" topic that isn't complaining about price, freshness/lack of dates, or goofy adjuncts.

Oh, I think you misunderstand. I'm not piling on Rogue. Many people love their beer. This is on me, not them. Something about my tastebuds I believe. With the XS, I gave the remainder of the bottle to my friend (a very experienced craft beer guy) and he said it was great.

FWIW - he and I both have an issue with most of the beers from New Belgium. We call it the "New Belgium Twang".

Just do what I do. Stay the hell away from Rogue.
they are overpriced, lack freshness dates, have weird adjuncts and treat their employees like crap.

    (you are welcome @Prince_Casual )

I'll give a brand a good try before giving up but yes, If it just doesn't work for me than it's not gonna work for me.

Rogue doesn't appeal to me for anything, so I never buy them. The only one I somewhat enjoyed was their double chocolate stout.

Rogue throws their employees in a bucket while they do the Defoe "Platoon" thing before dying of suffocation?

Yes, I disagree with their practice of boiling their employees in a pot full of water and Old Bay.

Perhaps that explains the unique flavor in the wort.

Same w Ringwood yeast beers for me. Absolutely vile taste. Lots of the original NE craft brewers used -- and still use -- Ringwood as it was popularized by Allen Puglsey and the turn key systems he sold all over New England in the 80s and 90s. Geary's. Gritty's. Shipyard. Long Trail -- a very long list. All vile to my taste buds.

    Nah, Beard Yeast.

    Yeah, Pacman in Dead Guy.

Not aimed at you @FBGordon , but since the OP mentioned one Rogue beer, a "double" of that beer, and two beers from two other brewers, it might be jumping to conclusions to point to Rogue's yeast. I thought Pacman was considered pretty clean, but oddly enough, the link to the article in the recent thread about Paste's pilsner list had this to say about a Rogue pilsner: “Wait, this can’t be Rogue, it doesn’t taste like Pacman yeast” ... so maybe it's not very neutral after all?

Not with you on this one, OP.

I think >10 yrs ago, a lot of folks cut their teeth on Dead Guy. It presented a beer that was safe for new folks--great malt back bone but had enough hop in it to know it wasn't a Fat tire or some other bland amber. Perhaps the best American take on Maibock I have had.

I think the PACMAN yeast angle is over blown. It seems most folks jump in on Rogue threads and answer Pacman, shitty treatment of employees, price whining, or the some thing about pink bottles among other silly stuff.

If I had to guess on the Rogue--someone told you it was the best thing they ever had and then perhaps it was doomed. Seems silly to say but that has more influence than most will admit. Perhaps followed the wrong beer-again this would suffer after having some intensely bitter beer before it. Have you revisited now with a different expectation? A Dead Guy with a big pizza or burger is a beautiful thing.

Still really holds up for me despite my desire for very hop forward beers. Haters hate but Dead Guy has been well awarded at big time competitions.

Always have at least one six when surfcasting in the fall.

Rogue doesn't believe in bottle dating, so there are a lot of really old ones floating around. That taste could just be a combination of diacetyl/oxidation that tends to show up in their stuff as it ages.
