What is likely my last NBS entry (but almost certainly not my last new brew, as I think I'm hitting a couple different friends houses to open some bottles) comes, in a shocking development, from @smanson56 's LIF box: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/34132/117249/

I might slide back in later tonight, but no promises. Y'all have a great Sunday, and a happy & dangerous 4th tomorrow!

New Berliner Weisse Sunday (week 593)

" Hudson Valley Brewery Hopvine Bling Collaboration

In April we flew out to Denver to brew with our friend Brian Strumke of Stillwater Artisanal. He is making beer at Crazy Mountain Brewery, which is equipped with a 50 bbl brewhouse and a range of (very large) fermenters. "

Hudson Valley Brewery is our local, now "ex", Bacchus brewers, "J" and Mike, moved on to the next level, a new brewery in still very close to me Beacon, NY, and this is the first offering from them, a collab with Stillwater, and I mention this since there is no mention of it in the "notes" of this beer's listing. The Hudson Valley FB feed and web page show their progress, and I speak for many who cannot wait for the likes of Lilith and Holy Mole to be made in larger quantities. Have high hopes for Hopvine Bling, as Berliner is a style all these collab. members excel at making.

Drinking this now, just finished the review, am sooooooo enjoying this beer. Every once in a while something surprises you, and even though I expected this to be great, I still am surprised how much I am enjoying it.

Pours a light straw color with a fleeting finger of white foam. A thick ring and ample islands are surrounded by some nice lace legs.

Woww what a crazy and complex aroma. Nice rounded tart notes mingle with some sharper notes and play nicely with white wine, earth, lemon-limey-ness, and really intriguing undernotes of spicy, funk, and flowers. Exceptional.

Well, how great it is when a plan comes together. All the many flavors of the aroma are here, brightly presented, with earthy flavors growing to be more a major player, and the tart notes more subdued than the aroma predicted. Add a touch of grapefruit, and hints of oak. The balance of these combined with their clean presentation create beer excellence that is just amazing to taste.

Here is where the beer creates its magic. All the elements, carbonation, viscosity, body, the soft feel of the liquid, refreshing character, the clean linger, and excellent finish combine to frame the flavors and allow them to create beer majesty.

One of the finest Berliner I have tried. I can't recommend it highly enough. Brilliant and bright beauty.

I'm so glad to be drinking this, and I hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

I am working around the house today because we decided to spend the day at Mirror Lake Park tomorrow. :grinning:

I am moving on from this one quickly as it is a big miss from Shorts. Straw yellow with a one finger white head. The nose has an odor of a skunked witbeir with grass, lemon zest and pepper. Not all that appealing. Flavor is odd. Not much of a wheat beer and is messy with the coriander, lemon zest, and pepper. The finish is oddly spicey as when you put on too much black pepper to your dish spicey. Pass on this one.

It was new to me, but not really new since it's been sitting in my fridge for a while and I finally just gotten around to drinking it. Have to say it aged well, and I enjoyed it. I'll be back on here later today and tomorrow morning to check out everyone else's new brews!

Moving on to a much better beer.

Pale yellow and cloudy with a thin 1 finger white head. Fades into a thin ring with no lacing. A pleasant fresh peach aroma with some lemon notes with some oak and minimal funk. The peach flavor is there with notes of lemon acidity and a strong tartness. A slight vinegar flavor on the finish, but lacks any funk that would bring it up a level. Light bodied and fizzy carbonation. Very enjoyable, yet expensive.

Did a nice hike today, upper 60s, light rain, cloudy. Not a new brew, but it has been many years since the last time I've had it, and for whatever reason, I enjoyed it WAY better than the last time I had it. FW has always impressed me with their brew's. Way to go FW! Awesome Brew!

    ABV: 13.1%

    Been A Long Time Coming!

Poured into a chalice a very nice thick black color, very nice carbonation, with a quick/fizzy creamy tan head, which leaves a pretty nice medium size oil slick/island, with some minimal sticky lacing. The nose is very nice, malty, with a very nice touch of chocolate/toffee, vanilla, cherries, figs, plums, pretty nice bourbon/oak notes, some licorice, slight coffee. The taste is really freakn' awesome, malty, very nice vanilla sweetness, very nice touch of bourbon/oak, licorice, dark fruits, chocolate/toffee notes. Full body, ABV hidden very well, this is a very complex brew. Overall, definitely one of the best brew's I've had in a long time. Highly Recommended!

Thanks goes out to dsgolovin for this brew.

    22oz. Bomber

Pours a jet black color, nice carbonation, with a one-finger creamy tan head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, tons of chocolate/toffee notes, vanilla, slight bourbon note. The taste is malty, sweet, with lots of chocolate/toffee. Full/Medium Body. The ABV is too up front on this one. A very tasty brew.

    Cheers!

    4.16/5 rDev -2.8%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

16 oz matte black can with a "freshest by 10/15/16" stamped on the bottom, poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

It is an orange gold. Just slightly foggy. The head is off white, to light cream in color and pretty moderate. Decent film stays on top.

Smells pretty earthy. Like well/mineral water and the husk of a melon or cantelope. Also some grapefruit and very fresh smelling malts, and a touch of alcohol.

Initial taste is sour grapefruit, pineapple, sweet chewy malted grains, and that earthy, mineral and musty cantelope note that I could smell is really prominent. There is a lingering floral boquet flavor that must be the honeysuckle mentioned. The bitternes builds, and lingers, but doesn't overpower anything.

The body is excellent. Very smooth. Full, but easy drinking and No alcohol astringency.

This beer is reminiscent of Sixpoint Puff in many ways. It is an excellent dipa. Its well made and worth trying for sure, but it's a crowded market and I don't know that I would buy another 4 pack either because nothing really jumps out about it either.

Here's one more that was handed to me. I've never tried any of these hard sodas, and it seems that one from a good brewery would be a good place to start. Here goes.....
Mission Hard Root Beer at 7.5% pours lignite black/brown tossing a momentary little white cap that quickly recedes into the liquid. Aromas of anise, vanilla, earth (lignite?), and maybe a little sassafras bounce around as the soda is swirled about. In my wonderful little Hitachino glass, and after a few minutes, the root beer looks like a coke left out overnight. Damn!
Mission Root Beer tastes like something made to taste like root beer.....Either there's an intensity of natural flavors that are beyond me, or I have that random odd bottle that burns a bit, turns a touch minty (weird), with a flavor and smell combo that will make me put it away for good.
The flavors are muddled and not necessarily pleasant, like medicine that you know ought to help. The beverage is still- looking, but has some zip when sipped, but the zip only intensifies the muddled herbal flavors.
I have really tried to like this drink, but it's now moving towards the sea. Some may really like this root beer, it may well have its place, and it IS interesting, but I cannot think of a single possible moment where I might drink one of these. Perhaps it's the reincarnation of wine coolers (also malt based), but stronger and more dangerous. I don't know. This one may benefit from vanilla ice cream, but I'd rather just have the ice cream. This stuff could drive you to Steel Reserve.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: "Jefferson Jericho Blues". This one has a little something to do with Thomas Jefferson's personal life.

Hi everyone. I hope you're all enjoying your Pre-July 4th. We spent a nice afternoon in Stockton, NJ, a delightful little town on the Delaware River (more about that on WBAYDN). For NBS, I'm having Bolero Snort's La Taureau Tripel, a limited release. The ratings for this beer were really high and I was anxious to try it. I was fortunate to be able to find a bottle. The high ratings were justified - I think this is the best American-brewed Tripel I've ever had! Here's my review:

    4.42/5 rDev -1.1%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

Poured into a tulip glass. It pours a hazy, orange-brown color with two fingers of foamy, ecru-colored head and lacing. It smells of Belgian yeast, coriander, clove, and orange peel. The taste is pure Tripel: orange, lemon, coriander, clove, Belgian yeast, and a touch of hops at the finish. It is tangy and has just a touch of sweetness at the finish. It is medium-bodied, nicely carbonated, and has a bit of a kick with an ABV of 8.1%. Overall, this is perhaps the best American-brewed Tripel I've had and gives the Belgians a run for their money. A superb beer. It was only brewed once and I'm glad to have been able to find a bottle.

Based on my curve, this is a really high rating. I hope to find another bottle or two, if I'm fortunate. Cheers BA's!

I took in some beautiful New Hampshire scenery on my Sunday drive through Crawford Notch State Park. The tourists and hikers were out in droves. So I guess I was tourist in my own state today

This was first released in 2016 so it is a new beer from Victory. It is their Victory XX Twentieth Anniversary Imperial Pilsener. I love Pilseners if they are done correctly because of all those German style toasted malts and grassy hops. This was far more muted than the ones I like although I didn't dislike it.

Are all of y'alls friends as indecisive as mine are being today? 3 different folks want to get together, but, they all want to host, and all have different start times. My buddy Chris has to work early in the morning (he's a butcher, this is his 2nd busiest week of the year), as do I, so J's 8pm start time doesn't really work for us. B & L want to start earlier, but need to walk the dog and hit the store first. Chris is down for a small thing at his place, but he just got off work, and wants to go to one the breweries for a couple, then hit the store. Meanwhile, I just threw 15 kegs around, and I'm about to start my 6th brew of the day. Man, this friendship stuff is hard work. Cheers all, thanks for letting me vent!

Things are pretty good when you can have a new beer at a ballpark. This is Davidson Brothers Brown Ale. It's damn tasty and well made. Dark fruits dominate, mostly date and raisin, but there is just enough roast malt to give it a cocoa powder edge as well. The finish is pleasingly dry, with a decent snap of bitterness at the end. B+ 3.75.

Cheers, and enjoy the rest of your Sundays!

Back for what's probably my last today. At my bro's sharing a bomber of Towny Bar American barleywine from Tapistry Brewing in Bridgman Michigan. The bottled on date is 05.25.16 with no abv. listed on the label, but a quick search revealed it at 10 percent. Let's give it a pour in a 13oz. snifter!

Pours a caramel color leaving a small finger of off white foam that settles to a ring and some lacing. The smell is caramel forward with some floral and fusel alcohol. Flavor is caramel once again followed by some palate pleasing floral qualities. A bit of alcohol is detected in the finish. Feel is oily in the front with a nice alcohol bite in back.

A pretty solid American barleywine that's equal parts caramel and floral flavor with a nice bite from the alcohol in the finish. I'm regretting not buying at least one more to cellar for science. Another new beer added today, my score was 4.1 / 5. For the record my bro enjoyed it as well.

It's been a quality day of new beer, heading home to grill and crash as I'm running a 5k tomorrow morning. Have yourself a great Independence Day!
