Good Afternoon Fellow NBSers on this cloudy and bit cool July the 10th
Today, I cracked under all the pressure and cracked open my first ever BCBS. Wasn't planning on opening it for awhile, but due to that annoying thread keeping on popping up, I figured with a long afternoon in front of me today would be a perfect day to take the plunge......
New American Bourbon-Barrel Aged Imperial Stout
Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    4.57/5 rDev +1.6%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5

serving at cellar temp from 16.9 oz bottle into libbey tulip
    was bottled on 10/2/15
L- pours a thick syrupy brown with quickly fizzling out tan head
S- vanilla, charred wood, black licorice, chocolate, real boozy as well
T- thick dark fudgy chocolate, bourbon, marshmallow, smoky charred finish along with vanilla
F- super thick, viscous and yet great drinkabilty especially considering 13.7% ABV
O- after hearing about this beer "possibly" going bad, at first I was thinking, maybe this is bad as well. However, after going through about 15oz of this awesomeness, I'm thinking "why oh why did I only buy one"!!!! And thank goodness for that last ounce!!!!!!! I can totally understand people lining up for this chocolate fudge bourbon Bomb! (Even though i bought this in April at good old Cable Beverage!!!!)
Overall one heck of a beer glad i got to try this one. This beer is full of flavor, perfectly balanced, and super drinkable. Couldn't ask for more from a Bourbon-Barrel Aged Stout.
    Cheers!!

    New Lager Wine Sunday

Jack's Abbey BBA Brewery Maker Lager Wine

Happy Sunday, BAs. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend, and regrouping after what, I imagine for many of us, was a very difficult week.

Today I'm trying this lager wine from Jack's Abbey. There was a bottling date on it, but as I wiped away the condensation to read it more clearly, it disappeared. I'm guessing it's pretty fresh as I bought it at the brewpub a week ago. It has a sticker that says 13.5%, so I'm guessing this is going to kick my ass. I won't be complaining after the week this has been both nationally and personally.

It pours a murky, cider-brown color with a half-finger of sudsy white head when poured into a wide-mouthed snifter. Leaves a good layer of suds across the top even after most of the head dissipates. Decent lacing, too.

Delicious bourbon aroma that pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the barleywine. Oak, fig, raisins. A kiss of vanilla, toffee and pine. Very, very good.

The taste is almost as good with many of the same flavors as the nose, along with some shortbread cookie malt and a slight, but definite, hop bitterness of the back end.

It's got a big, creamy mouthfeel, with a little prickliness and a hint of burn from the alcohol in there. One of the best mouthfeels of any beer I've had.

I had the Vanilla BA Framinghamer last week and was disappointed. This one, however, is blowing me away. I'm not educated enough to comment on the barley "lager" part of this. It's just damn good. I imagine this would still be good with some aging, but I strongly recommend trying it fresh, too.

Hello NBS! I just got into posting here about a month ago, and I missed a week or two, so I hope I didn't break too many "codes", and would be honored if I am welcomed back. Having said that:

Crux Fermentation Project [BANISHED] Better Off Red (Barrel aged Flanders-style red ale)
    7.0% ABV, 18 IBU
    [IMG][IMG]

A: Slightly muddled amber with a quick dissipating white head.
A: Lacto tartness, a touch of red wine and oak
F: Much less intense than expecting. The wine and oak shine, with a mild acidity, and traces of dark fruit.
F: Thin, slightly oily and somehow dry at the same time.
O: I have tried very few Flanders Reds, but compare them to my most common one being Duchesse de Bourgogne. This is very good, but there is no comparison, especially for the price. Cheers, and Happy Sunday!

G' afternoon NBS-ers! I see plenty of tasty beers on the thread today! More than happy to join in.
    Today's offering:
Crooked Stave Vieille Reserva Prunus Armeniaca
Golden Sour Ale Aged in Oak Barrels with Apricots
    [IMG]

Poured from a 375ml bottle into a tulip glass. Bottled August 2015.

Beautiful pale golden colored body with about a 1/2 finger's worth of head, dissipated quickly.

Aromas of apricot and a strong vinegar, acetic smell, small amount of oak, strong funk.

Taste is tart and acidic; thick apricot taste, vinegar-like with plenty of oak. Almost like a white wine.

Light mouthfeel with a clean and dry finish.

Overall, a delicious brew, not an everyday drinker for me, but a tasty one for sure. Plus my first from Crooked Stave and it didn't disappoint.

    Cheers!

I think it's the alcohol-induced condition where things fly out of your mouth that seem well formed and intelligent to you but really don't hold up to outside scrutiny. Many of us have suffered from this condition at one time or another.

    Hello NBS people,

Picked up a single of Lagunitas Aunt Sally. Sounded very interesting, and I've had pretty much every Lagunitas beer that I can get my hands on. Wasn't sure how much I'd like this one so I didn't commit to a full six pack. Even now after having one in not sure if I'd like more.

Looks nice enough, light gold, some carbonation and a thick head. Aroma is interesting. I can pick up that dry hopped citrus resin but I do also smell the sourness as well. Taste is similar. Pretty tart and sour but the dry-hopped aspect kicks in. These are kind of warring components but the end result is a tasty unique brew. Not for everyone and not an every day drinker for me but glad I tried it. Cheers!

I mowed what's left of the drought stricken lawn and sprayed some weeds. It's time for another new beer! I purchased this one at the Greenbush anniversary bash around a month ago. It's called Monopolipa IPA brewed with raspberries. The name is a reference to the brewery buying up property on both sides of the block in tiny Sawyer Michigan. Let's pour this 8.5% twelve ounce bottle dated 06/09/16 and get going!

It pours a reddish brown color with a few centimeters of off white quickly settling foam. The smell is mildly sour raspberry, melon, mango and cheesy yeast esters. Taste is mildly tart raspberry, some solid floral notes, and a little citrus. The feel is mildly tart with a dry finish.

I'm a fan of Greenbush and this one falls in the middle for me. I've yet to find an IPA they brew that's memorable and this one is no exception. A tasty drinkable beer that is a bit on the heavy side for a lawnmower beer. Glad I tried, got another GB tick in the process. My score was 3.72 / rDev 0%.

Off to my bro's for a couple! Maybe back for another later while grilling? Enjoy your new beer adventures! Here's the scorecard......

Alaskan brewed a nice single hope IIPA. It is clear dark yellow/brown with a 1.5 finger white head. It dissipates moderately and a ring lingers around the glass with lacing noticeable along the sides of the glass. A nice blast of pineapple, papaya tropical aroma. Bitter and grassy hop notes with some citrus. Definitely Galaxy hops. A good amount of tropical hops with pineapple and papaya dominant. Sweet malts with a caramel and ripe fruit help balance the bitterness out. Nice carbonation and a slightly resinous mouth-feel. Kinda sticky and dry afterwards. Solid IIPA using only Galaxy hops.

Hey, everybody! Happy NBS, and I hope your day is going well.

I'm just about to get dinner started and I just poured this new one from Victory
    [IMG]
    Tart Ten.

The nose is surprisingly mellow, but with some coaxing I'm getting a fine blend of malt vinegar, gingerbread, apricot jam, honeysuckle and caramel. The flavor is mostly rounded and sweet with some tart sharp edges- the caramel comes out much more at first, along with the apricot and maraschino cherry mid-palate, and the finish is long and moderately tart. It's a lot more candy-like than I was expecting, yet simultaneously gentle and bordering on bland. Overall, it's easy drinking and non-challenging, with nothing truly standing out; I really have to focus to pick out any of these individual qualities. I will certainly enjoy this bottle, but doubt I'll be going for another (B+, 3.65).

Chocolatey stout by Aleworks. Dig it. Thick, chocolate, a hint of coffee notes. Balanced and smooth. Enjoy it and recommend it. 3.75 to 4 stars.

Happy New Beer Sunday, everyone. One of my best beer buddies recently drove home from New Orleans and brought me a box of beers he picked up along the way. So I decided to devote this NBS to sampling my first beers brewed in Mississippi.

The first is Southern Pecan Brown Ale from Lazy Magnolia Brewing in Kiln, MS. I was disappointed with this one; I thought it was really bland. It wasn't nearly as flavorful as Clown Shoes' Pecan Pie Porter. Here's my review:

    3.46/5 rDev -4.9%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Poured into a tulip glass. It pours a pretty reddish-brown with a thin, milk-white head and lacing that disappeared very quickly. It smells like pecans and roasted malt. When sipped, there is an initial sweet caramel malt taste and a mild pecan aftertaste but not much else going on. It's relatively creamy and with an ABV of 4.5% it is very easy to drink. Overall, there simply is not much flavor.

#2 was Devil's Harvest APA from Southern Prohibition Brewing in Hattiesburg, MS. I thought this one was quite good. Here's my review:
    4.09/5 rDev -4.2%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Poured from 12 oz. can into tulip glass. It pours a cloudy, orange-amber color with one finger of fluffy, egg-white head and extensive lacing. It smells of malt, orange peel and other mild citrus, and floral hops. The taste features a strong malt backbone with lots of tangerine and grapefruit. It finishes with a blast of hops that leaves a bitter, almost sour, aftertaste. This ale is medium-bodied, pleasantly carbonated, and with an ABV of 5.9% you can have more than one without really feeling it. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised; this is a well-crafted and tasty APA.

I'm glad finally to cross Mississippi off my list of beer states. Alabama's next. Cheers, everyone! Musical pairing. What else?

Happy NBS everyone! Just watching the UEFA Euro 2016 finals right now, hopefully it won't end up going to PK's. For my first new brew of the day, I had a bottle of Victory's V-Twelve: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/345/8998/?ba=bluejacket74#review

I thought it was a good and enjoyable brew. Not quite as good as the Belgian classics, but definitely worth picking up. $7.99 for a 750ml bottle is a good deal for this. I'll have another new brew on here in a bit. Cheers!
