I'm about to do my first IP trade, and not sure if I bring extras. The guy lives in my city and has access to everything I have, I just don't want to show up without and look like a fool. Thanks yall

What did your trade partner say when you brought up this conundrum in your conversation with him?

It wasn't talked about, just wasn't sure if it was maybe just assumed.

No reason to bring extras on an IP trade.
    You're fine

Communication is key in all trades. Don't make assumptions. If you're uncertain of something, ask about it. Sometimes I've done extras on IP trades, other times I haven't. But it has always been worked out in advance. Or just go with @Yabu's suggestion.

I have never done extras in an IP trade, but I have received one once. I always send extras in a trade that I ship unless it's specifically agreed upon in advance that we aren't going to send any.

I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are, address it in communication.

It's really simple. If you don't feel that you have something that you an extra, tell him "no extras, please". I think every time I said this before meeting up, my trade partner was relieved as he/she was in the same boat: same area of distro, nothing interesting to extra. You can take charge of any trade you're involved in. No reasonable trade partner is going to balk on a trade because you said "no extras".

I usually bring extras when trading IP. Regardless of distribution footprint, there's a fair chance you might have snagged something they have not, or vice versa, and even if you bring something they also got, who can be unhappy about receiving an extra bottle or two of good beer gratis?

If the trade partner is coming from out of town and I have something they can't go to a store and buy while they're here, I'll bring it. If they're in the same distribution footprint, I usually bring it up in conversation and see how they feel about it. But lately I haven't had anything they can't get, so I haven't done extras.

I usually check the trade partners want list and see if there is anything reasonable that I have.
Or, if I have something interesting or similar to what we are trading that is out of their distribution I will bring that.
You could always bring a few interesting brews and offer a choice.

As others have mentioned, communication is key! Sharing is caring, etc.

Unless my trade partner says *absolutely* no extras, I'm still gonna bring something . You only get one chance to make a first impression.

I've always done extras on IP trades, rarely gotten extras. Doesn't bother me, I still bring them every time.

As usual, I find myself agreeing with @dmbforever and the mad truth he speaks. I get it: An extra is an extra. And perhaps if you're brand, spanking new to craft beer and/or trading, you really don't have anything interesting to give as an extra to a fellow local. Which is fine. But most other folks do, I bet.

It seems to me that it really boils down to whether you view trading as a fun, mutually beneficial activity done within the so-called craft-beer community or merely as a commodity exchange. I'm betting there's a high correlation between those with the latter view and those into competitive trading/trade-winning and dick-swinging bottle parades ... er, shares.

I always being an extra or 2 to IP trades. Only once or twice my partner did not bring one as well. I figured it's good beer karma either day and at worst I'm still hopefully making someone's day.

    @MHorridge
I certainly appreciate the kind words. Giving extras is like saying please and thank you, holding the door for someone ( ladies especially) going into a store, gas station etc. It's effortless and can most certainly be rewarding to the other person and hopefully puts a smile on their face. To me, that's worth the price of admission. I've made some great RTP's on this site, and more importantly some great friends. Certainly everyone can't afford to give extras, just like everyone can't afford to drive a Mercedes Benz....but if you can find a way to give (going above and beyond), the rewards can be endless.

Most IP trades I've done have been at establishments that serve beer (bar, brewery, ect...) I usually invite my trade partner in to have a beer or two- not really an extra, but it's a cool having a beer with new folks.

I always bring an extra or two to an IP trade (it's the only way I've ever traded, I've never shipped before, and probably never will). I also agree that if you're not planning on bringing something, it's nice to tell the person you're trading with that you don't want to do extras, just as a courtesy.

If in the same distro area, I might throw in some type of memorablia, maybe a cool opener/key chain, beer fridge magent, etc. Never really doing a IP trade, I'm just kinda spitballing

I've only done one IP and included a nice single can as an extra, which is less than I do when I'm shipping.

My trading partner included a nice single can as an extra as well.
