I'm one of those people who's guilty of what you're describing. But understand, I didn't change my habits to get BK. I lived in a part of the country with great distribution and generally got a new mix six pack every week. I also really enjoyed the posts and conversation on WBAYDN most nights. It had nothing to do with BK. That's an issue with the system, if you don't like it. That being said, it will likely take me a couple more years to get to Poobah, assuming it comes back, which I'm fine with. (I did feel a little weird having that many points in a year, because I don't feel my knowledge is at that level.) I'm not saying some people don't do it just for the BK, but some people do it because they like drinking different beers. Either way, living in the beer desert I do now, I will be ticking way less now.

I want bk back, it was nice to get an idea of the contributions of other posters and to look for milestones. It got me to start reviewing places, which I wouldn't have really thought about other wise and to try styles I probably wouldn't have.

yes, it was weird to see fairly new members hit it by way of just "likes", as opposed to a combination of beer reviews, place reviews, forum posts, etc.

I have always considered beer karma, in its various renditions, to be an incentive. To be active, to be helpful, to add to the community, to clean up what needs to be cleaned up ie reporting things like duplicate listings, incorrect styles, etc. Hey, guess what? I haven't said anything that hasn't already been said on this thread already. I reckon I'm just backing up what my mates have already said. They're a wise bunch of beer drinkers.

Coming from a former "Poobah", it doesn't really matter to me personally since I never recieved my fuzzy blue Water Buffalo hat anyway:grinning: However, it probably did encourage some more particiaption/ contriutions. I will second @beertunes setiment that the likes and karma for WBAYDN (which has turned into WBHaveYouDrankLately anyway and taken away from the virtual bar aspect, but that's another story for another place) should be reevaluated, or eliminated. This biggest asset to this site, though I have made many friends, remains the database for reviews/ratings/listings of beers and places as well as the help you can find in the forums from trading, to beer vacations and food recipes. Which is why I stopped lurking and joined in the first place.

So the short version, as long as my stats overall (beers, places, etc. ) don't go away, I am not worried about the karma, but I am probably in the minority and it is still another fun aspect.

Not sure why you would take away something that is just for fun.

I liked the beer karma, too, and would like to see it brought back.

Adding to the conversation... I thought the karma for likes ratio was fine because it capped out pretty quickly. I've been posting on the site for less than two years, and had already reached the cap for likes points, and I imagine the mega-posters reach it in 6 mos or so. To reach poobah status it seemed like you had to rack up points elsewhere -- something I looked forward to reaching in the coming years.

I will say I agree with the concept of points for full reviews and also for adding photos and anything else that really adds value to the site.

I think this is huge. Now I'd like to preface this by saying I'm a ticker, but something I will not do is simply rate a beer on here to add to my "hads" list. Especially if it was just a sample (not to say I wasn't guilty of this early on here). I've read about folks on this forum who go to bottle shares and tick 20+ (some even 50+) beers in a night, giving them all average ratings. Congrats on getting to 1000 beers and getting the karma, but you're not helping anyone. That's fine on Untappd, as that's more of a ticker's paradise, but if we want to keep the legitimacy of this site and its reviews, that shouldn't happen here.

I will admit, I think one of the highest contributions here is to post a new beer. They rarely pop up, and thus it is difficult to add a new beer to the system. I think the scale should be reworked for new beer postings. That said, we'd have to be able to eliminate duplicates a little easier. It's my understanding a new system is in the works to help with that though.

I'd like to see it back with a better points system that rewards more for beer reviews. If it came back with the same scoring system I wouldn't care as much.

I liked having the beer karma; but as others have said, I would like to it to be overhauled if it does come back. I was one of the top 10 or 20 people on the site before it got axed, but it was very much a system of diminishing returns. I constantly add beers, places etc; but eventually it becomes near impossible to get more points. I do think that full reviews should get more recognition as well. A lot of the previously top reviewers of this site, have since gone to just ticking now; and I think that is really unfortunate. I will never stop writing out reviews. Also as far as WBAYDN is concerned, I put a lot of time into writing out long posts for every single thing I submit; so I don't think that it should be excluded from being added "quality content".

All that being said, I really don't care if it comes back or not. I will continue sharing my reviews on WBAYDN; and adding new Beers, places, etc for the foreseeable future. I love this community and I feel that contributing and interacting with others on this site is just as rewarding, whether there is karma or not.

    Cheers

The removal of beer karma, while a minor aspect of the site, is yet another reason my personal use of the site has been drastically reduced. The new formats are in my opinion poor and overall I just don't enjoy the site nearly as much as years past. Thats my take on it agree or not, but my several dozen visits daily have been reduced to a few weekly visits.

This discussion is interesting and all, but unless there is some hope of changing their minds then continuing it is only going to incite the villagers.

I enjoyed it but if it's too much to maintain then I'm all for finding a new easier system.

I don't want to be a party pooper but I hope all this doesn't kill WBAYDN. The thread has its flaws (Hi the ''N'' police, y'all are right) some of us including me are guilty of spamming, admittedly sometimes mindlessly and even more so as alcohol goes up in our system and the night go on. Still, this thread is a bit of our ''cooler'' so to speak. Unlike the rest of the board where we're supposed to behave and be more coherent.

The new format/interface make it much harder to browse this specific thread too and I noticed a decline of activity there. Dunno if that's because people are on vacation or because it has just become painful to scan through giant pics.

As a long time daily lurker, and more recently a contributor (of dubious worth perhaps), I have enjoyed the karma points, and have been motivated to look for and try a wider range of beer styles. I hope it returns in some form. My local retailers, beer bars and breweries have benefited from my more frequent visits for certain.

One note: Posters who add a new beer, but do not rate or review it should be ashamed and docked points !! It is not helpful behavior.

I'm gutted and angry, feel like my time has been wasted and I've been tricked. I have been one of your most faithful users for two years, but am seriously considering leaving for good. Its not really about the points, but the feeling of being had.
