Really? You have a source on that? What/when/where did they release last month?

What are some good food trucks or coffee places to check out? Thinking we might just hit up beer bars on Saturday before the fireworks, and a good food truck at some point would be perfect. I know Montreal has specific laws that force them into clusters around the city, location isn't a problem.

Le pied de cochon has a food truck
Le pied de cochon has a food truck.Pretty good one but it cannot beat eating at their restaurant.

If you like a good grilled cheese taken to a different level,i would recommend P.A & Gargantua. Here for a well deserved review:https://mtlstreetfood.com/2013/07/01/p-a-gargantua-food-truck-review/

    Out of this world !

Auval is pretty small and always will be.So they distribute their beers once a month in the Montreal area.Roughly between the 20 and 26 of each month. No source from the internet.Just fron experience and from within the industry. The beer is all gone within 24 hours.Maybe a bit more if you're lucky.I learned the hard way when I missed out on Saison Espinay in may and Arcane 17 back in april.

OK. But there wasn't any last month. And they say no more will come here before the end of September (on their fb). And prior to that it was not a monthly thing either. I have been able to get it three or so times, but that is over the course of months and months.

Basically, I just don't see the reasoning behind recommending such a difficult-to-find beer to someone visiting the province rather than listing all the great beers that they could find easily while on their vacation without getting them thinking about specific non-confirmed dates to be checking at beer stores. Anyway, I hope that I am wrong and some shows up in a couple weeks. If it does, shoot me a beermail et je t'invite :grinning:

There is little reasoning beyond the fact that Auval is exceptional. And that alone would actually make it good reasoning

Fair enough. If OP got lucky and randomly stumbled upon it it would definitely make his day!

The grilled cheese truck sounds great. Thanks!

We've got reservations at Cochon, so that's already covered.

I saw that one of the restaurants (Liverpool House) I'm going to has HF bottles for on-site consumption. What's the normal rate for these up there? My main focus is trying local stuff, but might splurge on one with dinner if it's not too astronomical.

I have seen them around Mtl for around $45. Usually something like Dorothy or Arthur.

Looks like Liverpool has Edith. Not a huge fan of black saisons so I'll probably pass.

One last question before I fly out in the morning. Do bottle shops/liquor stores sell singles? Is breaking up six packs even allowed? Shops in Seattle do it, but I know it's not common everywhere.

Don't worry, most bottle shops do sell singles. I don't know about the breaking up six packs, I never had to, but you probably won't need to.

    Have a great trip!

Flying home tomorrow morning, had a great trip.

    Montreal thoughts:

Our AirBNB was a ten minute walk from Dieu du Ciel's brewpub, so we ended up going twice. The Sostice d'ete Mangue was phenomenal, as was the Framboise variant. I also really dug the Mosaika pale.

Depanneur AS was also nearby, grabbed a couple bottles and had a fun talk with the guy working about Trump, Stephen Harper and how Kinder Surprise Eggs are illegal in the US. We hit up MaBrasserie which is an amazing space and had a huge taplist from all the breweries using the facility. Also checked out Pit Caribou's pub on Rachel and Isle de Garde's pub. Both were great.

Vices et Versa was great fun. Cool space, nice taplist.

For restaurants with beer, Liverpool House was solid. Had an Oatmeal Pale from Ghost Farm Brewing which appears to be affiliated with Lawrence (had a killer brunch there). Super hazy and hoppy, seems to be their only beer so far. They had HF Edith bottles, but a black saison for $39 was dumb so I had Le Castor's Citra Hef on tap instead.

Bily Kun had Yakima IPA and ostriches on the wall. Bar Big in Japan had shit beer but awesome atmosphere and great bourbon/whiskey so I gladly slummed it with Geuelle and Tremblay while my wife enjoyed her firewater.

    Quebec City:

L'Axe du Malt was a nice bottle shop two blocks from our AirBNB. Snagged a Dunham Ping Pong Wizard bottle and some Ruffles poutine chips which I hadn't seen anywhere else.

Bateau de Nuit and Le Projet were also super close to our place. Both had great taplists and incredibly friendly bar staff.

For food, L'affaire est Ketchup was the highlight of our entire trip. I cannot stress just how good the food was, and this was after eating at Au Pied de Cochon and Liverpool House in Montreal. I had two Le Trou Diable beers and a Farmham beer with my meal, was I happy with their beer offerings.

We also visited La Barberie which had a really nice Gose. My wife and I stopped at La Korrigane before dinner at L'affaire est Ketchup where I had their Saison aux Framboises with Citra hops. Really nice.

Great trip, thanks for the recommendations. Looking forward to beers at the airports in Toronto and Calgary tomorrow.

If there was a bingo card for conversation topics when you talk to someone in Quebec as an American, this would be in the free space. :grinning:

Glad you had fun! Thanks for reporting back, I am always curious how people's trips go and a lot never tell us (hopefully not cause they were disappointed).

We really had a great time. What I found interesting is that Montreal reminds me more of Seattle than Vancouver does. From my experiences, Montreal comes off as much more relaxed and casual than our Canadian neighbors to the north. Never had a bad meal and also loved how bike friendly it was. And to keep this on topic, great beer as well.

What you experienced was the french "joie de Vivre" or joys of life in Laymens Terms. We have a very laid back work comes second sort of lifestyle here not really seen else were in North America, At least not in my travels. Take it from this Anglophone ( native english speaker) who calls Montreal home, I love to visit as many places as I can but Montreal will always be my home!

Great Thread! I'll be visiting Montreal September 25 through September 30. Going to do a day bus trip to Quebec City as well. Thanks for the insights!
