I've been a member for 10 months and have really gotten in to craft and the Beer Advocate site. I have gout and already having to moderate intake, particularly high ABV, and may have to give it up altogether at some point hopefully way down the road. I won't resort to switching to non-alcohol beers. Just wondering if there are any BA members that have stuck around the site even though they can no longer partake - basically staying for the advocacy. Not asking anyone to detail why they don't or can't drink, just wondering if it happens. I understand some may not be comfortable saying they are in this position. Thanks!

I'm sorry . When you have to quit something or want to, it can be hard. I do know of someone who is still around although not as much.

Used to be a friend of a friend who attended beer shares and releases even though he had Celiac's and couldn't share. Haven't seen either of them in quite a while.

I quit for a month every year and still come here, it's fun to see what everyone else is drinking even when ya can't indulge. Not sure I could do it if I had to stop drinking permanently.

Just an aside I have a friend got gout very young, mid 20's, and had to give up many things for a strict diet. Thirty years later he is in good shape and his gout is under control and not debilitating.

The meds worked for me for 25 years, and most of that time I drank very little. Since I got into craft last year I thought my problem knee was getting worse, but turns out it is gout and I can tie it to when I drink.

    Was at a work-related function today and saw/heard a guy order a non-alcoholic beer (I think).

He even ordered it with an acronym from the bar tender and the bar tender handed it to him without a blink. Unfortunately, I barely caught what he said.

Is the a code/acronym for these beers when ordering at a bar?

I swear he didn't say I'll have a NA Blue, but I could be wrong.

I honestly would not be able to stay around. It would be painful to talk beer and know I could not partake. I am not saying to anyone you have to drink to belong just that I could not do it because the fun I have is the enjoyment of drinking beer and sharing my experience with others. I sure hope you work out your medical issues and can again enjoy some beers without ill effect.
    Cheers and best of luck!!

If I had to I could probably live with something like one or two a week and still enjoy the beer talk. If I quit altogether, like never having a beer again, I wouldn't see the point. In any case, I hope everything works out for you.

Not sure I could still come here if I couldn't drink anymore. Like @cavedave , about once a year for a month or so, I do not drink just to lose some pounds I have put on over the last year in my case. It is rough to come here and see all the great beer and read the stories and not literally go crazy to have a cold one. Not sure I could do it if I could no longer imbibe. I also developed Gout in my 30's, but I take meds and avoid everything else that could cause a flare like shrimp, peanuts, etc., and drink beer in moderation and I do not have flare ups. Lucky I guess.

I, too, have the gout. I do not moderate anything. I get 2-4 flare ups a year that come up without any apparent rhyme or reason. It's certainly not alcohol related. I can feel it coming on and take an indomethacin or two and it's gone within 24 hours. Being on this site and not being able to drink would be depressing.

I'm on daily high dose allopurinol - otherwise I have a constant bout. With allopurinol, if I don't drink, and avoid eating a ton of shellfish then I'm fine. Indomethacin works great for bouts, but not supposed to drink while on it.

Absolutely. I too have had issues with gout and other arthritic conditions, thus altering my alcohol intake at various times through the years- there are also many other dietary issues surrounding gout, not to mention genetic components. Allopurinol and cherry juice work well.
I have recently "quit" drinking (early March) but will "taste" beers "professionally" with my son for comments on New Beer Sunday. I miss mass consumption of beer, but I don't crave it. I am much healthier these days, have lost weight down to college levels, sleep better, and dammit, I have more patience. I also have saved a s-load of cash.
I enjoy BA so much that I had to find a way to stay active without retaining the old habit. I've experienced beer fully in my life and have zero regrets. Being around here and not drinking beer is no problem for me. No preaching from this vicarious "old" fool!

I like your approach with NBS. I'll have to check out the cherry juice - suppose Ommegang Rosetta and Lindemans Kriek don't count. :slight_frown:

Man I am really sorry to hear about your situation. Personally, I couldn't hang around if I couldn't drink beer. It would cause too much sadness. If I were in this situation I think I would be looking to see if there was a "Weed Advocate" forum.

I know a guy who says he can only drink Coors light..Does that count as not being able
    to drink?

hang tough as long as you can handle it. for me, if I didn't drink beer I wouldn't participate here because I wouldn't want to offer my opinions to the ba's if I wasn't drinking beer, to me that would be wrong. imo. cheers

    Good luck with your quest.

But "no" I would not be here if I couldn't drink. There's some good guys on here (and some chowderheads ) but I come here to find out about new beers, and where I can find them. I wouldn't go to concerts if I were deaf, and I wouldn't go to car shows if I couldn't drive anymore.

It would be tough for me to visit here and not drink. Even on days / weeks when I'm drying out, once I stop in and start reading I get thirsty. When I joined it increased my drinking to my current levels, it is a self fueling thing - the more you read about great stuff, the more you buy it, the more you drink it.

Damn, that's about as enlightened as a fellow can get with regard to craft. If they bring back beer karma, I make a motion that "rgordon" be the highest rank! Seriously though, you give me hope that when (sadly not "if") I have to taper off from a pour to a trickle, that there's at least one role model of moving forward in a very positive manner with less beer!

My goodness, and thank you. I remember great beers through the years, can still taste and smell them, so my sensory memory is very much alive and real. And I do still "taste", making serious notes as I do so.
