A new pale ale from Stone Brewing Co. takes its name from the Australian slang term for fantastic.

The beer is Ripper Pale Ale, a 5.6 percent ABV pale ale brewed with Cascade hops from the pacific northwest and Galaxy hops sourced from Australia.

“When it came to devising the concept of our next pale ale, we drew inspiration from the coastal locale of SoCal and the land down under,“ reads a beer label filed with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB.)

“While some might think it lingers on the edge far closer to (an) IPA, with all the dry-hop flavor and aroma, it’s actually right in line with the current-day interpretation of a West Coast pale.”

According to the beer label, Ripper Pale Ale will be packaged in 12-ounce bottles.

    yummmmm

packaging looks like Go-To though.... maybe they should alter that to avoid confusion? Or is this going to replace Go-To?

Outside of the Stone logo itself, I don't think it looks anything like Go-To. Color is different from one, and after that the words don't look anything alike. If you confuse the two when looking at them, you may not need to be drinking as is.

The end remark wasn't referring to you, I promise. More that anyone confusing the "Ripper Pale Ale" and "Go-To IPA" text on the package shouldn't be drinking. It was tongue-in-cheek.

Well, going by the label text, looks like I'm not enough of a rad, gnarly, brah dude to even begin to appreciate this beer. Guess I'll have to settle for a fizzy, yellow beer that Stone can't waste resources on. Oh, wait...

More seriously though, why not just all it an IPA? They even admit on the label that we're going to think that it's an IPA, and an overly hoppy Pale Ale is, by definition, an IPA, why add the extra layer of bullshit? A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.

At 5.6% ABV this beer is too 'light' in the alcohol department for me to consider this beer to be an IPA. SNPA is also 5.6% ABV as a point of example.

Maybe you have differing thoughts about IPA and ABV?

    Cheers!

Just going by my personal taste test, I've always considered SNPA to be an IPA, all the way back to the first one I had in the early-mid 90's. What is, in my opinion, the best IPA made in my state (Field 41 by Bale Breaker) is called a Pale by the brewery, but when ya drink one, you know you're drinking an IPA. So, according to strict judging guidelines, these beers may not be IPAs, but, out in the day-to-day real world, they certainly are.

It would seem that I live in a unreal world because SNPA is not an IPA to me.

    Cheers!
