Bring back Beer Karma. It's fun, and anyone who wants to ignore it can do so. It has been a definite contributor to many people's enjoyment of the site. It also has the potential to help the site grow as people add more sites, photos, and other content that is the basis for getting points.

Couldn't agree more. @jesskidden (Mr. Info At-Hand) is an exemplary BA. Sometimes I mention him in a post just to get his insights.

I've done the same thing (tag him for insight) when I'm simply not certain about something adn am not sure how to find out. I kind of imagine @jesskidden as the Keith Richards character from that one Pirates of the Caribbean movie, where once he drops a ruling, that's pretty much it. Of course, I haven't heard of him shooting anyone yet....

Just to respond to one of your points. I have added beers to the system even though I did not rate/review them. I didn't do so for the KP. I did so to contribute to the community. If a brewery, particularly a small one, doesn't have its offerings in the database, I feel like it's my duty as a BA to put it in...even if I didn't imbibe.

Kind of bummed to see it go, but if disabling beer karma keeps a site like this free, so be it.

If you find a way to bring it back, kudos. There will always be people who will go that extra mile to earn some kind of recognition, be it a badge, a point, a title, a cool little doodad, etc...

Yep, I often add all of the beers when visiting a new brewery even if I only have the chance to try one or two.

So is there an estimation as to when the KP system will be back up and running?

"Never" is a possibility. I am curious though, of those folks on this thread who said they would stop using the site over it, have actually stopped using it? Wonder what the traffic numbers are, and, now there are new members who never had BK points, how they're feeling about it?

@dbrauneis gave an appropriate lawyerly response to NBS being cool or not cool. I definitely think NBS is cool, if only for the pictures. Not to mention the humor, the music, the genuine bonding, and the subtle and not so subtle exchange of ideas and opinions.

I am not gonna lie. I did enjoy achieving "Champion" status, even if my participation has been scant as of late. (Have I got a story for y'all someday!) That was the "cherry on my beer sundae". First and foremost; I am here for the great beers, to learn a thing or two or three, and great people. Oh yeah, the new look is pretty sweet also. Cheers!

IANAL but thanks... Just meant that even though I do not participate (nor do I participate in WBAYD), I understand the appeal for folks. My rationale for the exclusion had nothing to do with the value of the thread but rather that it would become "like"-bait.

Someone else mentioned that after years of participating on the site, moderate to large numbers of review of places/beers, numerous added places/beers, and activity in the forums (excluding NBS and WBAYD) they had less Beer Karma than some folks that had only been on the site a year or two and got their Beer Karma from tons of likes in WBAYD) with a minimal amount of reviews.

I love the new design but I miss the Beer Karma!!! I would like to see a point system that rewards everything. Such as:
    Beer "had" - 1 point
    Beer review - 3 points
    Place "been" - 1 point
    Place review - 3 points
    Posts - 2 points
    Likes - 1 point

People could then earn badges or awards for so many reviews or posts. Also you could put back into circulation the titles that people earned after so many karma points.

    Cheers!

I didn't read all 9 pages of this thread, but I gotta say that Beer Karma is something I have enjoyed in its various forms over the 7 years I've frequented this site. I saw quickly that Todd says removing it reduces overhead (not financial overhead), but increases site performance.
As much as I am enjoying BA 4.0 (or whatever this new version is), I definitely was content with the site's performance/speed prior to the update, and haven't noticed a difference since it was removed.

I already voiced disappointment in the removal of the app, but getting rid of the app and beer karma is a huge huge blow. Removes my motivation for contributing and reviewing.
    Hope it comes back, cheers.

I am a beer drinking dork and I loved when I made it to Poobah. I feel we have many of us that besides loving beer also promote and try our best to get as many people into craft as possible. This community has a lot to offer each other and I hold many of my fellow Advocate Poobahs in a little higher regard, because most of them have been around awhile and really know a lot. It is just a title, but one my wallet and liver worked hard for.

I'd respectfully disagree. As a user, I generally don't need to know a beer exists - I'm likely looking at it. I generally want to know whether to buy it. The breweries have their own sites for making people aware of their products.

Just my opinion. I at least hope you're adding the brewery's notes .

Amazed at how many people miss the beer karma system but I guess I'm a bit older and not so digitally aware. Also surprised at how many would abandon the site if its gone. Seems a bit childish but apparently beer karma matters:rolling_eyes:

I think more people are likely to do a review, if the beer already exists on the site. A lot of folks don't want to take the time to add it, then review it. Shrug. Modern times.
