No sweat - I was just joking, sort of. I'll drink anything (and my name isn't Mikey) at least once.

I had a wine-barrel aged stout from them (and not for $2.99) and was quite underwhelmed.

    Well, that's why I'm me, and you're not. :stuck_out_tongue:

As long as we're on the topic, just a reminder, NBS BIF #4: MWK, will be rolling after Labor Day. I'll do an interest thread in a few weeks, but let's all start considering drafting some folks, so we can top the number of participants from last time, which, IIRC, was 35. We need folks from the middle of the country, and the Plains, and Mountain regions. don't be shy about armtwisting your friends!

I really liked the idea behind The Final Countdown (a name that now makes me think of Arrested Development/Europe), but I felt the pacing was too slow. Just when the movie felt like it was getting somewhere, back they go. One BA's opinion,,,

FWIW, I remember liking The Philadelphia Experiment as a kid, but haven't seen it in forever.

I know what you're thinking and I was too cool to watch it then, although with Irwin Allen in charge it had to suck - remember "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" with the sub hitting the same rock week after week after week after...

I know. :slight_frown: But I loved that show too! Despite the same rocks and the walls of the sub moving sometimes when somebody got thrown into them. :stuck_out_tongue:

Last new beer today. This was a gift from a friend of the GF's and comes from the state of Ohio. I figured it would make for a good dessert beer for the evening, as it has maple in it. This is Jackie O's Bourbon Barrel Black Maple:

On the bottle, it states this is an imperial porter to which Sticky Pete's maple Syrup was added (for the boil I am inferring). This beer poured a lot thinner than maple syrup (thankfully), and it was a deep mahogany if not black. Not much froth built up, and the one pour had a thin rim while the other was a bit bare.

Nose was a bit sweet with the maple, bourbon, vanilla, a little cinnamon, and then a back of maple (again, not for emphasis, but I really got two distinct notes of it).

Taste does actually seem to have a nutty base - as the bottle describes they were looking for. There's a bit of the barrel in the otherwise roasted malt and light licorice note that joins this nuttiness. The bourbon seems to be hovering over the rest of the beer until mid taste, when it crashes into the rest of the flavors, creating a delicious little mess for a second. The final notes are burnt toast, bourbon-soaked wood, and that little cinnamon bite.

The beer feels fairly thin, especially again if compared to the adjunct. There's a subdued heat for the entire taste, peaking with that cinnamon thought at the end. A nice sipping beer that wasn't quite as sweet as I might have thought it would be, but is still definitely on the sweet side. Makes for a nice sipper after or during dessert, in my opinion.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @utopiajane for getting us started off this morning. I finally got some things fermenting again. Cyser yesterday and a Star Thistle traditional mead today. Been a while since I made anything, but I am going to get moving on more batches in the coming weeks. Beer too. My 4500th review will be on Tuesday.

    New Beers:

Pretty nice wheat. Aromas and flavors of mango, apricot, lemon, orange peel, wheat, cracker, biscuit, and herbal/grassy/light peppery hops. Moderate herbal/spicy/citrus peel bitterness on the finish. Light-medium bodied with balanced grainy wheat creaminess and hop stickiness in the mouthfeel. Crisp and dry, with no lingering hop or fruit astringency. This one felt quite a bit more hoppy than I expected, given the style. But it is very well balanced and full of flavor for the low ABV. 3.68
    [IMG]

Very good Pale ale. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pepper, and pine hops; with moderate caramel, toasted biscuit, light nutty malts; and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Moderate herbal/spicy/citrus peel bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied with balanced creaminess and hops stickiness in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop oil; zero astringency. Really tasty and well balanced. Not sure about the really low ratings for this one. A spot on pale ale, though nothing flashy, is very tasty. Cascade/Northern Brewer hops. 3.78

Cheers NBS, I'll be back later on.

    Hello, NBS people,

Late to the party, I was at my in-laws' lake house and got back late. Anyway, it's finally nice enough to sit on the patio and relax. Today I figured was a good day to have the bottle from Other Half. I've almost completely only had their hoppy offerings in cans or on tap. This was a nice Brett departure.

Forgot About Drie, an Oak Aged, Brett beer. Pours Amber, has a thick, creamy look to it. Aroma is a bit light, get some funk. Taste is where this one shines. A bit sour, but not overpowering. The oak aging mellows it a bit, and adds some creaminess to the mouthfeel. This isn't the most complex wild ale I've had, but it was delicious and very drinkable. Good for Other Half to try some different stuff. And I didn't have to wait one line! Cheers!

This here has been my new beer of the week...
Two stores I know of got in a case or so, offering a one-bottle limit. I went to store #1 on Monday and grabbed a bottle - BTW, thanks @mschrei for telling me it was being released! I went to store #2 on Tuesday and they had just gotten it in, too. Went back on Friday, and again and Sunday (that's reasonable, right?), and both times they still had a bottle for me.

God bless our local stores, eh? :stuck_out_tongue:

So I'm actually on my fourth and final bottle now, and can say with certainty that this is a fantastic DIPA, particularly of interest to those partial to Citra hops...
    Blah-blah-blah and I didn't have a problem with sediment.

I just poured it like a normal human being and suffered no ill-effects whatsoever. 4 times.

    Just awesome...
I am a sucker for Citra, far as hops go, and I love a good DIPA - as in, an IPA, but with higher abv and proportionally bigger flavors. One of my all-time favorites was Noble's Citra Showers...
Pleased to say that this beer is right there... :sunglasses:

Second pour pics, Game of Thrones rewatch session... *S2, E5*
Big, juicy, citrusy impressions; full-feeling, and with that fresh fruit vibe...
Moderately bitter up-front, sugars offsetting the bitterness and rounding the feel...

    Love the label art...
    [IMG] [IMG]
    [IMG] [IMG]
I commented that I kept calling it Citra Ninja because of the ninja face :grinning: - the label art is fun - I've only had two other "ninja" DIPAs from Pipeworks: Amarillo and Mosaic, wherein I liked them both, but the Mosaic is a favorite. Looks like they've got 4 or 5 others in the line, and I'd gladly try them all, though I imagine Citra and Mosaic are hard to eclipse, being partial to both.

Alright, then, NBS - hope yer new beers are great! Cheers...

Ever see Time After Time? H.G.Wells vs Jack the Ripper in late 70's SF. One of Malcolm McDowell's few hero roles, with a young, cute Mary Steenburgen to boot.

I once saw a documentary on PBS about TV sci-fi, and it showed how Allen was so cheap they'd use the same costumes on "Voyage..." and "Lost in Space." Some poor guy was shown wearing some sort of frogman costume and being spray painted a different color so he could then play an alien.

Greetings, NBSers. After mowing the grass, a Sunday chore that I happen to love because I can listen to tunes and TURN OFF THE FLOCKING PHONE, time for a new beer.

I've had a small handful of beers from these guys and enjoyed them all. This is no exception. The pour reveals a gorgeous burnt orange beer that is a bit cloudy, but allows abundant light through, propping up 2+ fingers of almost tan head.

The aroma is all Mosaic dankness, and that follows on the taste, plus there's some pine, probably from the Eureka. There's a smidge of alcohol heat, but at 8% ABV, this is a pleasure to drink. Just a really flavorful and balanced IPA.

    Rated 4.23.
