Went up to Seattle yesterday for a quick day trip with a buddy. We went to Brouwer's and Fremont Brewing.

Interesting glimpse of the scene up there. Brouwer's was really overpriced. $9 beers? Insanity.

Fremont was cool but had a utopian yuppie vibe going on. Not sure I could take that in on a daily basis.

Overall had a fun trip and was excited to try a couple of the spots I hear you all talk about so much.

Comments, suggestions for next time I visit? I don't think I'd been to Seattle in years.

Are you describing the scene at the brewery/Urban Beer Garden or are you talking about the neighborhood?

Man, I really dug Fremont. Great beer and if anything I got more of a hippie/hipster vibe from the place. Squarely in my wheel house.

Hippie? It was all families and overdressed people when I visited. Not hippie at all but I live just outside of Portland so...

I don't recall seeing overdressed people at the UBG but there is no doubt that there are often tons of families, dogs, folks in their 40's and 50's, etc. --- that would have been my crowd.

Sorry there weren't enough truckers' hats, vintage jeans, and chin beards to make you PDX folks feel comfortable. If you give us a heads-up next time, we'll ship some folks in from the late-night Ballard crowd to set you up just right.

People just seemed super closed off and unfriendly. Lots of small dogs too.

I'm a 30 year old well into my career. I'm engaged. Have a mixed breed larger dog. Just wasn't my scene I guess. Is that the Fremont vibe in general?

at Brouwers some beers might be worth $9 a pour others may not be. But if they are selling 12oz pours for $9 of a beer that is $20-25 for a 22oz or 25oz bottle it is not a bad deal.
A while back they had hair of the dog adam and doggie claws for $6 a 12oz pour which was not bad but now they have fred on tap for $9 a 12oz pour, now that is a rip off when you can buy a 12oz bottle for $5.50

I'm just giving you crap. The brewery vibe is generally that. Since it's not really a bar and it's set up with booths plus the long table, it's not really conducive to conversation with other patrons. And yes, my experience (since I tend to visit the UBG around 4-6 pm) is that it's families including small childen, dogs, and groups of people just doing their thing. Fremont, the neighborhood, is generally younger and hipper than the crowd at the UBG. Given that the owners of Fremont Brewing match the crowd you saw and the initial crowd when they first opened were their friends and their friends' friends, it's not surprising it's maintained the same feel over time.

But I have NEVER found folks to be unfriendly. Sorry you ran into some d-bags.

Something for everyone then. I saw a lot of 30 somes with dogs and Patagonia fleece when I was there. Bikes as well. Just like home save for mountains and ocean.

I went down to Portland and thought all the beer was underpriced. And then they wouldn't even charge an extra 10% sales tax. What gives man? Clearly not a world-class town.

"People just seemed super closed off" .That's just Seattle. People are reserved and keep to themselves. Sometimes ya kinda have to pry 'em out of their oyster shell. Fortunately, there's plenty of personality juice on tap all over town.

Seattle is a big city so people seem to act more like folks from NYC or Boston. Portland not so much. Portland definitely feels like a neighborhood town.

eh, Seattle is just like that generally speaking. I blame grunge. At least there is finally a good brewery in town (Fremont)
