Last night my boyfriend and I shared a mixed six-pack he put together for me as a little just-because gift. I was impressed by his blind selections. We had Dogfish Head's 90 Minute, Goose Island's Matilda, 10 Barrell's Apocalypse, Great Divide's Hercules, Empire's Black Magic Stout, and Maine Beer Co.'s Peeper. I couldn't wait to hear his thoughts, as a few of these would, in my opinion, really open a craft virgin's mind. "They all taste the same to me," he said. Really? Matilda and Black Magic taste the same? I said, "Okay, but they at least taste different than a Bud Light, right?" He paused, thinking, then finally replied, "They taste like they have more alcohol in them." You can't convert them all.

Your boyfriend's palate might be "special".

Hmmm, your tasting order might have made a difference. What sequence did you use? Also, did you use any palate cleansers between? If so what was it?

Ive just stopped trying to convert. Drink and enjoy what you will i wont pass judgment at all.
I walked my own path, and others need to too.
And yes you cannot convert them all, and some don't want to be converted or they are not ready.

Yeah some just will never be interested but some take time. My girlfriend took a long time to even try any craft beer, got into the darker beers and after 3 years has just started to like IPAs and other hoppy beers. Of course it doesn't hurt to have Trillium beers as your introduction to hoppy beers.

Serious question, can he taste the difference in other things? Say like food?

It is either going to be an argument or one of those funny moments as time moves along. He just may become a lover of Beer and thank you at some point. Bring home a Weihenstephan Hefe-Weisse, pour it just right, and if he thinks that tastes like the rest, be careful.

Nice mixed 6er! You can lead a horse to water, maybe even make him drink, but he may not like it.

My wife is the same way- a blonde ale or a barrel aged stout and if I ask her to taste she says " they all taste like beer" and she's not being ironic.

She's using double secret irony, from which there is no escape.

    Gee, I hope so. :stuck_out_tongue:
Try a sour/wild ale for her to try. If she likes wine, maybe she'll dig it.

    Does he smoke?
I've had the same reaction from a neighbor whom I gave 3 beers, in completely disparate styles.(ST Where The Helles Summer?, Founders Breakfast Stout, & something from Ommegang. Glimmerglass? - Forgot which.)
Neighbor : " I had one o' them beers last night. Pretty tasty!"
Me " Glad you liked it. Which one?"
Neighbor : " I don't know. All those beers you drink all taste the same."
    Me : :0 ?!!!???
It was the helles that he liked. Spit it out when trying it last year. He smokes vanilla cigarillos. As with most smokers I've known. his palate (food & drink) & sense of smell, is a bit .....askew. ; )

On the flip side though, if more people by from a specific brewery that you like, that brewery does better financially, is less likely to go out of business, and with increases in sales can put out more beer

    just food for thought:rolling_eyes:
