After 40 years with no beers, I read this at Ask Men:

    Tidbit #1
In November of 1999, The New England Journal of Medicine stated that light to moderate beer drinkers would decrease their chances of suffering a stroke by 20%. They also stated that those who drink one beer a day compared to those who drink one beer a week experience no difference in reducing stroke risks.

    http://www.askmen.com/sports/foodcourt/45_eating_well.html

I decided to have one beer a week; it won't kill me. Happily, I was working with a guy who home brewed for a while, and he introduced me to craft beers, BA and RB. That first Hoegaarden was a revelation.

    Now I came across this:

    http://www.newindianexpress.com/lif...tack-Risks-Weak/2015/09/25/article3047001.ece

That is more solid support for one beer a week. Maybe some of you can use this information to provide anti-beer folks an inducement to experiment a bit.

    Good luck.

Well...there are more reasons than one (medically or not ) to enjoy beer. Here are a few more:

    Not to mention hops themselves:

Needless to say, most people on this sight aren't too concerned. Cheers!

beer.does have some good in it for people in moderation. Just like everything.

I drink in all honesty, around an average 30 give or take beers a week Twice the medical definition of a heavy drinker (which is 15) and i feel just fine. No shakes. I get a bit jittery after like an 8 hour drinking session when my buzz comes down but i dont experience pain or discomfort or all that besides towards the end of the day i think about it a lot because at this point after so much time its just what i do and am used to that routine

Im not getting into medical talk because im no doctor. Just my 2 cents. But i drink that much because i choose to and i like it and ill be the first to say i dont want to stop drinking beer, because life is to be enjoyed and thats how i enjoy mine
And the point of me saying all this is that it is also personal and subjective, I recently had a physical and got a clean bill of health

    Cheers all.

I could never stick to one beer per day or week. I've got the ol' "addictive personality" thing. I admit I binge every weekend. That's the gamble of enjoying an addictive substance. I am impressed with people who can simply have one beer and not want another one. I wish my brain were wired that way.

Good point. And I am not kidding- When reading the last line, the choir starting the Stones "You can't always get what you want' started playing on of all things the NBC Nightly News.

Made me look at my G-bot, wondering if it was responsible.

Notice that the study description you linked to indicates the research included only women. While I'm not a physician, part of what I learned from working on a research project with a cardiologist is that what holds for women may not be true for men, and vice versa.

100% of births result in death. Those are some really lousy odds. A few years, more or less, versus a few beers, more or less, illness or accidents not included. Quoting an advertisement for, of all products, beer; "One life. Don't blow it."

I don't always fall into the latter category but the majority of the time I will only have a couple beers on the weekend only. I used to have three or four throughout the week but noticed that I was getting fatter. Additionally, I was not sleeping as well off of only one beer (takes a couple for a solid buzz to fall asleep easier, but then you run the risk of having a small hangover or something). So it was either lose sleep, or risk being hungover the next day for work.

Neither choice is ideal, so a few years ago I made the decision to only drink a beer or two on Friday and Saturday nights only. Some Fridays I'm so beat I have one glass and pass out. Overall, no ragrets. I sleep better during the week, and still get to enjoy great beers on the weekends.

Unfortunately the buying habit is another story. The beers seem to accumulate faster than I can drink them.

Just also want to point out that if OP was purposefully not drinking for 40 years...because they were in AA or something, one beer a week could very quickly turn into a lot more. And should be avoided altogether.

Not to be a buzzkill or anything. Alcoholism is just serious shit.

On the other hand, if they're just someone who never drank for "health reasons", then cheers!

I must add though that just because i was billed clean health, doesn't mean its safe or ok to overindulge. And i technically shouldnt drink as much as i do. I quit smoking because i was hacking up black shit after 4 years of it, I quit dipping after a year because my teeth got fucked up (fixed them currently, not worth the pain and trouble) BUT i can drink and have been of drinking age several years now and feel ok.

Again, not a doctor, but its proof that with everything you can do to your body, its still all subjective on an individual level wether you drink for good or bad reasons.

I think people focus on the side effects from alcohol when they think about how to consume beer. The idea is that too much alcohol has negative effects and that undermines all the other positive benefits from moderate or light consumption. Beer is not terribly strong anyway. at 5% it's like strong water and if you manage to keep to two per day, not only will you manage your weight but you will also reap all the other benefits. I have terrible insomnia and to take a beer to help you go back to sleep does not work if you do it every day. Adding a beer to your day and giving it some thought can be a kind of respite or meditiation as well. It's a small moment of civilization in a topsy turvy world. A place to make time for yourself, something to look forward to each day and I bet it will also lead you to healthier cooking because now you need to pair that beer with your meal.

I appreciate your concern, but I don't have a problem with alcohol.

When I turned 21, I sampled a few beers - possibly Hamm's, Falstaff and Olympia. I hated all of them, so for the next 40 years I stuck to cocktails. (I love Painkillers made with fresh nutmeg, Pina Coladas and an occasional Bloated Bag of Monkey Spunk).

About 4-5 years ago, I read about "one beer a week" and I have enjoyed reading about all the different styles and checking out Gluten in Beer and lowgluten.org. Thank you Beer Advocates for rating all the beers for me; that helps guide me when I check out the new beers at Trader Joe's. I'd rather dodge a bullet than take a bullet.

Honestly your best advice is everything in moderation. I don't listen to a single word from the "So Called" medical industry because we have seen time and time again them saying what once was good and recommended is now bad. To be honest I feel they are driven by drug companies and profit in the way they treat people. It is widely known that moderate alcohol consumption is very good for you, in fact it prevents a spectrum of ailments and improves long term memory. I think so long as you don't abuse it to addiction moderate beer consumption is a just fine. I would be more concerned about the food we eat and all the stuff added than I would about beer.
Now crack a cold one and stop worrying. Cheers....

I passed a kidney stone in '92. Specifically, I passed a kidney stone on 18 December 1992 at about 5:00 in the morning. I started passing it 2 frigging weeks prior. It would move for 8-12 hours, I'd be in agony, then nothing for a day or two, then it would start moving again, more agony... you get the idea. The urologist that treated me told me "when it's not moving, and you haven't taken any painkillers, the best thing you can do for yourself is go to the bar and have a couple of beers to increase your urine output and help it along." I haven't had another kidney stone, but I have gone out of the way ever since to keep that urine output up to snuff.
