Of course I have to ask the obvious.
Any sort of special bottle release for the ocassion? I'll be completely candid Trevor... I'm not really all that interested in driving out to Tillamook to sample more cantillon nastiness... But depending on what you're pouring, and what sort of bottle sales one can expect, well you know... That's a horse of a different color. Can't speak for others, but IMHO, something interesting from dG would completely change my mind about the need to make the trip out.

Damn, that's crazy. Cantillon beers are just straight sour and barnyard to me. I've had 4-5 peach/apricot sours better than Fou Foune. Finding a good Kriek is super easy (especially harvest time in Hood river). And the Gueze lambic beers are a 1 note sour to me. Had a lot of others over the past 5 years and all of them are pretty simple sours IMO

But hey, to each their own

PS- wasn't implying shelf beers available all year round. But during the course of a year there are 8-10 breweries at least that distribute funky/sour/wild beers around Portland that I prefer over Cantillon

Nothing is more 'sour' than de garde in my opinion. Tasked with facing a 750, i would fail every time

Nobody has to like it, but referring to Cantillon as 'simple' is tragic :slight_frown:

i'm all about the cross fade. eating too much has a pretty simple solution: level yourself off with one of them delicious soda pops.

Apparently you're only supposed to have like 1/4 of a rice krispy bar when you're not really used to it, you'd think they'd make a serving size a full rice krispy bar, especially for a drunk girl with a sweet tooth.

Anyways, still waiting for @deGardebrewing to PM me the deets on bobbing for apples stone fruits in a foeder as a consolation for missing out on Zwanze at the brewery.

Man, you need to expand your horizons. Go for an upland kiwi, then come back. Or upland tap water... seriously? De garde? Some stuff is really sour, but that's not their game.

De Garde has such a wide array of offerings it would be hard for me to categorize their beer as overall 'funky' or 'sour' because some trend one way and others are at the opposite end of the spectrum. I think they've been dialing back the acidity in general, but in the past De Garde has certainly made some extremely mouth puckering stuff, on par with Upland, IMO. I've had some 750's that we've shared as a group of 5-6 that didn't get finished because you could only drink 2-3 ounces of the stuff.

Luckily they've been trending more towards funk and complexity over sour - I believe it was on the Sour Hour podcast that Trevor was talking about preferring that style of beer and wanting to go that route from the get go but initially he didn't have the mature beer in barrels to be able to blend with, obviously right when they opened they just didn't have the luxury of that funky component of aged beer so the blends trended towards the more sour end of the spectrum. Cantillon and more so 3F make consistently complex, funky beers because they have that stockpile of mature beer to blend with.

It's also hard using only wild yeasts to really control the final outcome, since yeast is such a huge component of what happens to the end product. I'd definitely recommend listening to the aforementioned podcast to hear more about the process and what they've learned since opening.

I've had all the beers you could possibly think to suggest and then some. I agree with 'puffers

the unblended was one of the most sour (if not the most sour) beer i've ever tasted. it was also poured still, which i'm sure skews the result a little bit.

    John,
    We will see...
If nothing else, we expect to have a silly delicious 'on premises' bottle list and draft list available for everyone, not just those with tickets.
The hope is that we will have a few very exciting beers to release to go, but unfortunately, we likely won't know until much closer. Such are the vagaries of actual wild fermentation and conditioning!

Edit: I think it also bears saying that this event is and should be about Cantillon and their beer. We'll provide the best experience we're capable of to everyone ticketed or not, but that's the focus.

From a pure puckering intense sourness, I find they are much more sour tasting overall.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, or you haven't had the right de Garde's.

Really sad that this won't be in Portland and now de garde is ticketing this event. This was always a fun event and should be in a place that can reach the most people. Really a dumb move as many people will be shut out of the event.

Considering they offer sour beers it depends on which style one prefers. Not sure comparing sours and berliners is a fair assessment.

People would have been shut out in Portland too though.

de Garde is one of only a small handful of breweries exclusively making spontaneous beers in the US, and I think the first, I think it's an appropriate location.
