Here we go. Here is an extremely preliminary version of a Visiting Austin thread. I just copied the Portland thread and threw in some choices. Here is where you argue for things to move up/down/on/off/whatever. Especially the beer bar/restaurant section. I'm leaving that pretty sparse for now and people can suggest things. If we can get some decent agreement on whatever, I can post this as a Fall Version or somebody else can copy/paste the thing and adjust as necessary. I'm just providing a template and a lot of generally accepted info here so far.

I was also thinking a section for hill country area breweries might be good, but beyond Real Ale, I haven't personally had anything I'd fight much for. Just a thought.

I would honestly take out Easy Tiger for downtown and put Waller Creek. I'm not saying Easy Tiger doesn't have good beer, it just seems like their focus is on nationally known breweries as opposed to the more local market which a lot of people visiting are more in to.

Also, add Live Oak in either the east side or a new section for when you land, go directy there. EDIT: Just noticed its on there.

And add Circle and NXNW to the close together up north cluster.

The Seattle/Portland threads have at least 2 tiers of breweries. I was emulating that, but I don't really know where to draw the lines. I have my own opinions, but not sure what a consensus would be. I personally find value in saying these x breweries are ones you really have to go to if you're only here a short time. But I could just have it listed by location since people want to know what's around them often. Most people have probably heard of Jester King and Live Oak anyway.

Every city's different. I don't know that there's much that separates most of these places.

I think this is a great idea. Should be done for Houston and DFW as well since these are recurring threads almost weekly.

Any suggestions for the best combo of craft beer and live music? Will be there MLK Weekend. Any events that weekend are appreciated

Craft Pride on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon's/evening's or Whip-In on nights where they have shows, usually on Saturday nights.

If you want to see more established acts, Mohawk is a great indie music venue in town and they have great beer on tap and in cans at the inside bar. A little far out from MLK weekend to know of events that weekend.

Since Uber isn't in Austin any longer, are there recommendations on other local ride-sharing apps? I'm specifically looking for something that will pick-up at Jester King (which I heard could be a problem).

I'm flying into Austin on Sunday and it's my only shot at Jester King. I won't have a car, but now I'm seriously thinking about getting a rental at the airport just to go to Jester King and back, then return it the next day.

google "austin uber alternatives" I haven't used any, but there are a lot of options. That search shows a lot of review/comparison articles.

Pick-up at JK is definitely not going to be easy, but... Wingz is great and professional, if a little bit on the pricier side ($30 for a 15mile or so trip) and you have to book the ride at least 30min in advance. You can even set a pick-up time and they'll be there on the dot. Even where JK is.

GetMe is decent, but pick ups take a while, likely not much luck way out in SW Austin where JK is. Fasten and Fare are newer, haven't used them, but I'd expect the same deal as GetMe.

In all honesty, you'd likely end up spending at least $50-$60 on a ride-share to JK and back (depending on where you're staying) which may end up being the cost of a rental car for one day, if not less, but being able to drink freely with no concern for driving is worth something too.

    How about South Close together:
    Independence
    South Austin
    (512) although they don't have a taproom so no real need to list it.
and soon to be St. Elmo's

    For South beer bars:
    Radio
    Stouthaus
    Red's
    Baker St.
    and PHP of course

I'll second Waller Creek for the list. They always have a good selection.

I would also add Whole Foods (Domain), they have great selection and the best tap room takeover I've ever seen. Also, for bottle shops I would add in Total Wine (locations north and south). They are my go to place. They have over 400 individual beers.

Whole Foods Domain is on the list, but yes, it definitely has one of the best tap lists in town basically all the time. And a lot of Texas beers as well. An updated version of this thread might attempt to have a bit more detail on some things.

I haven't been in a Total Wine in Austin yet, but I suppose if we're listing Spec's, it's basically the same thing.
