So, a friend of mine is heading to Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego late next month. He told me to make him a list of beers to look for to bring back to St. Louis. I'm looking for mostly easily accessible local beers from California, as I don't want him spending his whole vacation hunting whales. Any recommendations for specific breweries or beers? I enjoy all styles, but prefer imperial IPAs/stouts. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Cheers!

Modern Times is easily accessible in all locations you mentioned and produce some very solid beers.

Pizza Port is canning Graveyards (a new canned offering) and I would recommend finding a 6pk of that, although it is an APA so not one of your preferred choices. Still very solid though.

I'm open to all styles. I love a good APA. Thanks for the recommendations. I'll add them to the list.

Betty IPA from Hangar 24 is widely available in cans and is really good. Have him stop in a Trader Joe's and he'll probably be able to score multiple items including Betty and Pizza Port and maybe even some limited Stone or Modern Times.

According to the beer distribution map on seekabrew, it doesn't look like Missouri gets Alesmith, so I'd definitely have him get anything from them, especially if you've never had a Speedway Stout.

Smog City Coffee Porter is pretty solid and relatively easy to find in the LA area not sure if it makes it to SD often or up north,

That is blasphemy and really really sad to hear. I know Alesmith is trying to expand to the rest of the states they don't have a presence in.

People going through life without easy access to speedway....I don't know how they can continue to live.

To be fair, Australia is waaaayyyy better than Missouri.

Sadly, it is true. We don't get Alesmith here in MO. I have to go to Illinois to get it. Speedway Stout is amazing. Thanks again for the recommendations! Keep them coming!

51/50 from Ironfire is a nice dank IPA and should be an easy find around SD.

While not in a weight-friendly package if your friend is flying, Alesmiths .394 Pale Ale is solid when fresh.

After MT IPAs though, they are crushing it now, and announced packaged format of Mage Hand.

Personally, I don't care for much H24 stuff, other than Pugachevs. TETO

Quite a few good bottle shop between here and there as well. In my area I would recommend Mr Ks and El Cerrito.

Cellarmaker in SF, and Noble in Anaheim (a little south of LA) both great for IPA's. Maybe a little harder to get (wouldn't say whale status), but not if he's hitting breweries on the trip. Both top notch. Otherwise, Modern Times all day every day. Cheers!
