Heading down from Chicago w my wife and 11 year old son for a Royals game and to enjoy the city. If anyone can recommend a good area to stay that's within walking or short uber distance since we are taking the train.Any places to eat and try some local beers also s help. Must be kid friendly too. Thanks
I took the train from KC to Chicago a few months ago. Had a good experience on the train. I am assuming you are getting off at Union Station. Since The K is on the Eastside of KC, it all depends on what you want to do. The Country Club Plaza is a great place to stay, as is Crown Center (where Union Station is) or even in Downtown near KCPL District. There isn't much out by The K, in my opinion. All of those places are kid friendly, or I have taken my kid to each of those places and have had no issues. Figure out a place where you are wanting to stay, and I can give ya some beer/food options. If I were you I would take Uber to The K, and commute back to Plaza, Crown Center or Downtown.
craftbeerkc.com is the site I would use for all beer related items. I live in KC, and each area offers unique things to do. If you stay down by Union Station, there is a bunch of kid friendly things to do. Legoland, Science City, Kaleidoscope, and a Aquarium but it is no where near as cool as Shed Aquarium in Chicago. The Country Club plaza has really nice shopping and high end restaurants, but not many things for kids to do.
The free trolley runs to from Union Station to City Market. Along the way, there is Ruins that has 40 taps that you can try by the ounce and Hungarian food, Anton's Taproom that also I believe butchers their own meat for their meals (or a farm to table sort of thing), and Grunauer is a German restaurant that has import taps (and is right near a Jack Stack location). A few blocks to the east of the rail line there is Border Brewing and Double Shift Brewing right next door to each other, Grinders (a prominent pizza joint with a lot of taphandles), Tapcade where I seen kids free to play with the video games while patrons enjoyed offerings from about 40 taps (Updown also in the vicinity does the same thing but I'm not sure it is geared towards children), and the Milwaukee Deli for a bite to eat and beer. If you wish to do the Uber route, I would be more than happy to give you more recommendations or check out the kcbeerblog for starters. I don't know about the lodging in the area, but I would think costs in that region would stretch a budget... generally better rates for rooms are found in areas with greater competition such as airports. Pleasant journeys!
