Since these are becoming en vogue now, I figured I'd start a thread with various beers I've had that are or claim to be NE-style for everybody's reference. I'm going to keep it to Illinois stuff just to be simple.

Mikerphone Special Sauce - Obviously one of the biggest ones. Thick, juicy, very hazy, with a little "rind-like" bitterness; probably one of the closest to what most people consider the style.

Hubbard's Cave Fresh IIPA - Similar to SS in haze/juiciness (but not quite as thick), almost no carbonation whatsoever. I've only had V1 (V2 and 3 exist as well) but have heard all 3 versions share a similarly low carbonation.

Hailstorm Cumulus - Decently hazy and juicy, although not to the extent that Special Sauce is. Lightly bitter.

Maplewood Juice Pants - Not really hazy at all, and thin like a typical IPA. Not particularly NE IPA-like, but almost completely devoid of bitterness (which is probably one of the main reasons it's called an NE IPA).

I know Ram has done one (Juicy), but I haven't had it, so I can't speak to it.

Please feel free to add anything else to this list that you guys find!

Mikerphone Hey Ya! - IPA that was certainly hazy and "juicy" in appearance. Also had that rind like bitterness.

Mikerphone Lunches Brunches and Interviews - I personally did not have this one, but by all accounts it was in that hazy IPA category.

Mikerphone Get Fresh Flow One of my favorites from Mikerphone, mosaic and nelson hoped - very hazy and appearance was juicy. Definitely had that rind like bitterness, but also some more traditional piney bitterness (that could just be the hop).

Mikerphone Shimmy Shimmy Ya - Another one I didn't have, but a friend did and it was in line with that hazy and "juicy IPA" category.

Maplewood Son of Juice - Forthcoming IPA from Maplewood - from the photos posted on Maplewoods IG it certainly appears to be hazy and "juice" like, but I'll reserve judgment for when I have a bottle based on Juice Pants.

    Are we really doing this?

    Yeah RAM Juicy qualifies.

Great thread. It's not Chicago, but I'd at least note Transient's juice is loose. I've heard it's better than all the ones mentioned above.

Also, Hailstorm Nimbus is supposed to be one.

    I've never had either though.

The very first time Hubbard's Cave brewed V1, back in maybe April or May, I drank several bottles that had perfect carbonation. But the one bottle of the newly-released V1 batch was a complete carbless drainpour.

It's interesting that most of Mikerphone's IPAs are in this style, and yeah, you're totally right about Son of Juice (just checked out their IG). Looks great!

Ah yeah, forgot about the Transient one (which I've heard is great).

Figures I'd try the bad batch. :stuck_out_tongue:

I meant to clarify in the first post (then forgot); I figured I'd start this thread because threads like the Mikerphone one keep branching off into discussions about the style, so this might keep things on topic better.

Great thread to start. I had these two over the weekend, and found them both to just be OK. I had light carbonation on Hubbard's Cave - definitely lower than what most beers have, but it didn't put me off too much.

Hailstorm Cumulus I didn't find to be very hazy - seemed almost more towards a "normal" IPA. But, I only had one and it was after quite a few other drinks. I plan on trying the remaining 3 cans over this coming holiday weekend.

I did have Shimmy Shimmy Ya, and not sure I'd say it was a NE style/hazy/juicy. If I recall (and it seems like it's been awhile at this point), this was the Wheat IPA, right? I think the wheat aspect made it a bit different than a "traditional IPA" (whatever that even is nowadays), but I wouldn't say it was NE style. I enjoyed it - nothing I'd go out of my way for again, but certainly a good drink.

I've had Cumulus twice (I bought a 4-pack), both cans have come out similarly. This is an admittedly badly-lit pic, but is accurate to how the beer looked both times:

It's definitely not Treehouse or even Special Sauce-level hazy, but it's almost completely opaque, which is what I meant. I haven't run into anything outside SS that's been comparable to the OG NE stuff in terms of look. Most of the stuff here has been in between. I agree that Hubbard's isn't that off-putting (I did drink my whole bottle in one night, so clearly I liked it), but it would've been much better with more carbonation, in my opinion. In terms of the 4 I mentioned in the OP, I'd rank them:

    SS
    Fresh IIPA
    Cumulus
    Juice Pants

In order of "truest to NE style" to least true to style.

I'd like to see Spiteful try their hand at this style and see what they come up with. I find their DIPAs very pleasant overall.

Juice Pants is nothing special IMO. Somewhat juicy/tropical on the palate but no haze.

Based on the Lincoln Ave tap version of Beer Hates Astronauts (hazier and more full than the bottled version), I'd like to see Half Acre give this style a shot, too. Hell, I'm surprised PW hasn't done one yet (and if/when they do, I'm sure there will be mass hysteria in Chicago).

Regarding the Hubbards Cave V.1/2/3 - does anyone know if those are bottle conditioned or not?

I bow to your expertise since you actually had it

Word. I'm sure they'd knock it outta the park. And it would surely have a witty name like" Beer Advocate lists about Chicago NE IPA's are for Knuckleheads."

I didn't have the latest go around of it, but very first batch of Sure Bet was about as opaque/hazy as you get.

Yeah, but Sure Bet has...*googles* mango puree in it, right? I think that disqualifies it from officially being from the unofficial NE style. :stuck_out_tongue:

A few weeks back I noticed Piece had a NE style DIPA on their board but I did not get a chance to try it. (?)

I was intrigued to try that as well. GI Fulton tap room had some IPA brewed with orange juice in it on tap a few weeks back...I think it was called Juice Man??? I didn't get to try it, as I was only there for a Cuvee of Darkness, so don't know if it was intended to be NE/hazy style.
