The wort rotating direction will influence the solid liquid separation effect. If you are located in the Northern Hemisphere, the direction should be anticlockwise, if you are in Southern Hemisphere, the clockwise direction will be the best choice.
    I should choose the anticlockwise!

I don't see a smile on his avatar. Not only does the hemisphere effect preferred direction of rotation, but higher latitudes are a factor. Expect whirlpooling to be more efficient in Saskatchewan than in Guadalajara.

Here are the basics . . . a more detailed version for the geek-minded.

Ha! Good point. I WP the same direction that my toilet flushes just to be safe.

This thread gets the official :astonished: Guess i unwittingly went the correct direction when setting up my kettle though…so I got that going for me.

^This. Thanks for saving me the time of finding a reference! (I'm assuming the Coriolis effect is what OP was thinking.)

I have tried for years to incorporate the coriolis effect into my brewing. This has kept me up many nights. Needless to say I have failed.

You have my respect and admiration. I owe you good sir!

PS. If I may, would you care to introduce a practical means of applying the principles of the Vadose Zone within the confines of the mash so that a simple program will resolve the functions of Darceys Law applied to wort viscosity? I am blocked at the capillary fringe within the interstitial space .
    Cheers.

On another topic: if I'm using a hop cannon for dry hopping do I need to worry about the coriolis effect?

You could also use a electric hand mixer so it spins both ways.

Ahh yes . . . in middle school Coach Vadose had us run a zone defense on the hardwood but we finished with a losing season. Probably why I don't care too much for it, plus it's illegal in the NBA.

I once dated a girl named Darcey . . . her father had some pretty strict rules about my behavior. I learned quickly I'd live longer if I took his word as the Law.

Vadose zone... Must be a geologist or soil scientist...

With regard to Coriolis affects, I always carefully orient my stove top to the north to maximize effect with regard to the difference in latitude between the "north" and "south" side of my brewpot.

I find brewing during high tide nets lower than average volume yeilds.

Of course I am serious. If you want to buy tanks from China manufacturers some day, you will know they have two different tangential port directions.
Maybe the affection is not very big, but it indeed exist..

In my opinion, the hop gun is different with whirlpool tun. The whirlpool tun has a bigger capacity and wider diameter. But the hope gun is much smaller, thinner tank. The wort being pumped into whirlpool tun, and needs to goes a long distance, but the beer being pumped into hop gun no need to goes a long way. So the beer is still powerful.
Some brewmasters will ask for two beer inlet on the hop gun. One is clockwise, another is anticlockwise, then there will be turbulence in the tank. I think maybe he want to let the beer totally absorb the hop flavor.
So I think the hop gun will not be affected... Just my own ideas.

If someone has data to show that the Coriolis effect has any measurable significance in influencing the rotation of beer in a kettle, I'd love to see it. I will bet a paycheck that if it can be done, the costs to set up the experimental conditions to eliminate the actually important variables and leave the earth's rotation as the only, or most important, symmetry breaker would be huge.

Try this: Lie down on the ground, with your head oriented North. See if you can notice your feet moving faster than your head.*
